People complaining about potential wages of £250/300k a week(fwiw, if you end up signing him i think it will turn out to be ~£350k a week) are talking as if he's just some 19 yo kid :houllier:

He's one of the best in the world at his position, and is going to become the second most expensive CB ever in transfer fee. He's not just some kid. Of course he's going to command top wages. And it's not like United couldn't afford an extra £100m on their wage bill, either...you could pay him £600k a week and it wouldn't be an issue for you finances. Nor should it be an issue for the dressing room given how much they sucked these last few years...

If we sign De Ligt we're in for a good summer. When a player like him comes available you have to move mountains to get him.

Buy his mum a house, get his dad a lifetime membership to a Chinese all you can eat buffet. Whatever it takes.

United are just not getting this player. He's gonna go to Barcelona. No WC player would wanna come here right now, United are a disaster. When pogba signed there was still hope. Zero chance of him signing unless we give him stupid money. I'd be happy if I'm wrong.

And Barcelona are much better? They've got Messi but they aren't exactly pulling up trees themselves. At least we're looking to do a full rebuild and make people like De Ligt central to that. Barcelona won't value him the same as we do, they've shown that by lowballing Ajax and saying 'yeah, but we're Barcelona'. That kind of arrogance doesn't get you far.

I can't tell if this is a joke...or serious. Barca are several levels above us.
Are you seriously suggesting that we are close to Barca, in terms of on-pitch performances?

Regarding De Ligt choosing us over Barca, this could happen, but it would only be due to the wages we offer. In pure footballing terms, he should join Barca and in 5 years time, he can re-assess his next move (which might be to us).

I mean.. they're still in the CL and just won their league for the 7th time in 10 seasons. They're also constantly 'rebuilding' too, i.e. snapping up some of the best young talent out there. They also already bought his other talented buddy (De Jong). Money might be an obstacle for them but he'd still go there way before he'd come here. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

Yes Barcelona are that much better. Your answer is in the first sentence. They've got a spine, winning mentality, leaders, true quality, a game plan, less idiots in the team. It's pretty damn obvious. What team have you been watching?

There is no comparison in most areas. Our only bargaining tool (apart from shed loads of cash) is the prospect of being part of a historic return to greatness of a once mighty club. This is not nothing. It wouldn't appeal to Neymar. It might to de Ligt.

Any there any credible sources that we're even in the picture for De Ligt? Or are people just assuming as much because Barca haven't wrapped it up yet?

The same one that absolutely bottled a 3-0 lead at Anfield, that one. If they think he's so great they should pay him like it, we can and will pay him for being a central figure at United, a lot more than Barcelona will. He'll have to play Europa league or a season but we should realistically looking to win that next year and pick up some domestic silverware if we recruit well enough this summer.

You're talking like we're 20 years away from challenging. We're only ever one good summer or two away from a major honour due to the funds at our disposal, we just have to get the right players in.

Barca are outrageously better than us.

I love De Ligt and he’s the player I want the most in world football.

But on the other hand, I don’t want any player come to United because of money. After Sanchez and Di Maria these failed deals, the players who came just because we offered the most money.

And now, the De Ligt deal almost the same. You won’t reject Barcelona and Messi to come United for sporting reason. He will only come for the money. That’s something I don’t want United do it again.

You come to United for more than fecking money. We are not an oil club.
Barca trying to get him on the cheap doesn't mean its money v sport, its Barxa spending too much already and are trying to have their cake and eat it

He's supposedly rejecting Barcelona because he wants a pivotal role and they cannot provide him with that. The biggest problem for Barcelona is they already have two of the best centre halves Pique and Umtiti who when fit is probably the best defender in world football.

Obviously Raiola is a problem too considering he's covering solely the financial aspect of the deal, but De Ligt concerns are completely fathomable. Di Maria case was completely different he was forced to leave, Sanchez was already in decline at Arsenal the season we purchased him.

It's not only a matter of money. A player of De Ligts talent could well be looking at Barca trying to low ball him and wondering how much they really value him.

How seriously is he going to be taken there is this is how things are starting off? Are they going to consider him an integral part of the side?

It can be about the money without necessarily being greed on the part of the player or agent.

Hopefully VDS is giving him a credible view of what the club was like and what it could be like with the right players. Age is on his side too, he could go to Barcelona in a few years if he wasn't sold on United.

Just because a player wants more money it does not mean it's the sole reason for joining. This whole new way of thinking that if a player wants a big deal he is not worth getting is ridiculous tbh. All the top players will command the highest wages.

You need to get the right manager in first in order to get those "right players" playing well together - the jury is still very much out on Ole whether he's the guy for that job.

And by the way yes, you're really that much worse than Barcelona, fecking hell.

Not to mention that Barcelona as a city has a whole lot more to offer than Manchester. I've lived in the Manchester area and Barcelona. To put it nicely; I prefer Barcelona...

De Ligt is the only signing that would make me feel excited about next season/the future.
The only thing that gives us slight hope of signing him is that he has a greedy agent in Riola.

Still, I would be suprised if he was to join us.

There's a growing sentiment that thinks mercenaries are what's wrong with United, even though the side winning the league right now is full of mercenaries.

And I could argue that literally every player making the step up are only after the money because compared to their former club, they will be making more money. If that club were capable of offering them the same wages would they still leave? Nobody knows.

The potential to come to the most watched league in the world at 19, be arguably the most important signing and potential captain of a club who has shown how desperately bad they want you to lead their revival is tempting I'm sure. If there's a truck load of extra money that too might be tempting. Barca are obviously much better than us but not without their own uncertainties and who knows what will happen post Messi.

Barca seems like the best choice but money wouldn't be the only other factor.

This is a good point. What we need to stop doing is signing players looking for one last pay day.

If we did pull him off, then it would be a pretty huge signing for us and an excellent start to our rebuild. If we did bring in Felix or Sancho in the same window then that would be a huge signal of intent imo.
