Rushed appointment irrespective of the start Ole didn't and hasn't deserved the job on the premise of his overall tenure since taking over Jose, the sentimental aspect of being a previous employee for the club has nothing to do with that fact.
It doesn't matter who we hired for next season, it was always going to be a transition the problem is we are trusting a manager with absolutely no pedigree with massive resources to triumph what three managers have failed consecutively to do. It's almost something of a fairytale.
This "good football" argument is nonsense and drivel that is spearheaded by delusion. Since Ole came in the only good football we have witnessed was the fixture against Cardiff. It is a myth for others to suggest we have played any good football under Ole.
The foundation of good football should be the measurement of possession, build up play, crafting chances and scoring goals. Liverpool / City play good football, Napoli played good football (Sarri), Arsenal early 2000's played good football, our 2008 campaign good football, Barcelona under the tiki taka system was good football, 80's Milan good football, 70's Brazil etc. Whenever has sitting off / deep and playing on a counter ever been considered good football ? That is a false narrative people have come up with.
While Solskjaer was many fans first choices and others last, the fact remains that he is the manager and all we can do is support him. We need to break this cycle of mediocrity in the team, even if Ole provides a platform for another manager to improve upon that is good enough In my opinion, not expecting a miracle when he's proven little in his managerial career.
This is a really great post. I totally agree with everything you have written here.
Ole is ultimately a 'heart over head' appointment. All things being equal, a club the size and ambition of Manchester United would have looked to a more experienced manager, with a track record at the helm of big clubs and of winning trophies, none of which Ole has. The problem is that the last two managers had exactly that resume and we still sacked them. In my opinion Ole's appointment is borne more out of desperation than careful consideration. Appointment to the United job, at a time when the club is in transition, is not the job that you would normally give to a rookie with no experience of operating at this level.
I think Ole will be given time to show what he can be, but I do not think that it will be long. If by December, United are playing indifferent football and more than 10 points off fourth spot, I really cannot see him surviving. At the very least we must remain in Champions League contention and by the end of next season, we must have secured a Champions League spot, that for me is non-negotiable. At the end of the day, United is a business, not a project. In the world that Manchester United operates, profits are every bit as important as points. As such, the idea that we can stumble along for three years in the hope that something will turn at some point, is utterly laughable.
People who contend that 'Ole will be given time' assume that Ole will achieve a Klopp-like turnaround at United. However, the counter-argument is that as long as United remain a peripheral player in the top six, we are less likely to attract top players or even keep the ones we have. As a result, we will have to pay more and more to attract better players to the Club. Unlike clubs in top four spots, these players will not be attracted to us by the lure of playing in the Champions League, they will be mercenaries looking for the next big pay day or opportunity to hawk their clothing line or aftershave off the back of a diminishing United brand.
I think United fans are rightly reserving judgement and giving Ole the benefit of the doubt for now. Anger is being directed at the board, at players, at the media and even at eachother. Ole is enjoying something of a honeymoon at the moment, but come the start of the season it will be time for him to deliver. Of the many things that football fans are famous for, unlimited patience with management is not one of them.
