It must be at least a week since some bloke called spoofer on reddit kicked off De Ligt watch, but I'm not convinced that anyone remotely reputable has ever stated that he has a significant chance of signing for United

This shit has happened time and time again and we always come out on the losing end bar Pogba. Let's expect the worse than the best will happen

Few Barca journalists reported that we have offered him big money and deal is not straightforward for Barcaa (also few reports that he is drifting away from Barca) and then Telegraph reported ManUtd have not given up on the player.

We'll know by the middle of next week where this is headed, least we won't be spending/wasting the entire month wondering. Need to get deals done now and can't be chasing unrealistic targets in our current situation. Hope he comes but don't expect it, need to see deals starting next week. So much to do.

He said the date when he was going to announce right? Do you remember the date?

What, he said in the next few days and the way things are being leaked through Mino we'll know if there is a realistic chance of getting him. I never said anything about a deal being done.

That is exactly the mentality that I am adopting as well, just like for the champions league final tonight too.

Well, Pogba, Di Maria, Fred, Sanchez and Lukaku... we've actually had quite a few 'coups' from other clubs

Pogba to Madrid

Lukaku to Chelsea

Sanchez to City

Fred to City

We've come out of transfer deals as "winners" for the player multiple times in just the last few seasons.

If he was that set on a move to Barca, surely he would just tell Rioala to make that happen as he wasnt interested in anyone else? I know agents hold a lot of power but its still ultimately the players decision. The fact that seemingly hasnt happened, gives me a glimor of hope.

Yeah we can afford to pay 120 mil for Griezmann and others but we can’t afford 10mil for Raiola. Yeah right.

Face saving...

the idea of players being fully committed to clubs and never thinking of other clubs is such a dead trope IMO. Just look how easy moves are. For all we know, De Ligt could join MUFC for 2 seasons, use Raiola to throw some chairs, and get a move to Barca, simply so he could develop a tough style to his game to take to spain.

That's an "out there" example. But i think idea of "oh he has his heart set on X" is basically reserved for a handful of players, if not single digit number of players. The VAAAAST majority of talented players will now seek out 2-3 options top tier clubs and basically laugh as these CEOs throw money at them and their agent. We might be playing shit, we are still a top tier club has the resources to dominate European football.

This should be easy.

1. Ask De Gea if he will sign a new congract if Pogba commits publicly that he will fight for Man Utd and we spend big on De Ligt, Sancho and a new RB. He will say yes.

2. Tell Pogba we will get De Gea on a new deal, De Ligt, Sancho and a RB if he commits publicly to the team long term. He will.

3. Ask Sancho if he will join us this summer if De Gea sign a new deal, Pogba commits and we buy De Ligt and a new RB. He will.

4. Tell De Ligt we have a project where all of the above happens if he sign, and he will be the captain of the team when we fight for CL-victory 20/21.

Boom, everything settled.

The face saving and character assassination articles are becoming more common now from the Spanish press...

Would be hilarious to see their faces when we inevitably go for some tesco shopping like Shawcross etc.

But the player hired Raiola for this move? He's doing the players biding for feck sake. Trying to seperate the two for face saving exercise is embarrassing
The thread title is taking the piss now. There's been plenty of quotes from the player himself that's news worthy

We're not going to change the title with each random quote. If there's actual news, as in a top tier Journo like Di Marzio, Romano, Romero et al say a move is likely, or else the player definitely says he wants to join a particular club or is flying somewhere for a medical then that's worthy of a title change.

How do we know he hasnt?

Raiola is hardly going to advertise this as all other teams would "drop out" meaning Barca could offer towards the lower end of their proposal.

If all teams are still in the race (irrespective of De Ligt secretly only wanting a specific club) all teams would have to up their offers to the maximum, thus giving De Ligt his preferred team and best possible contract terms.

P.s. I hope he hasnt set his heart on Barca as he could be a legend here!

I don’t doubt that Raiola is difficult to negotiate with, but the whole narrative from the Spanish media that the player is desperate for Barca (or Madrid when we was signing Pogba) is risible. The agent works for the player and if the player tells him he only wants to sign for a certain club he can’t force him elsewhere.
