In a time where CBs are expected to have a very solid contribution to the build up play and even do the odd dribbling to escape pressure, i don't know if having a "pure destroyer" as a DM is a good idea. Then again, he is not so technically inept as some suggest, he is young and still developing and playing for West Ham doesn't exactly help with dominating the midfield battles. If we sign him, i'll trust the scouts.

Baffles me that people want this guy, one of the most negative central midfielders on the ball. Perfect for a team like West Ham but would be a nightmare in a top side where so much more is expected on the ball.

Like I said a while ago this kid is 100% a CB. Never good enough to play as a CDM.

Grass is greener syndrome. I remember the same sort of unwarranted hype surrounding James McCarthy.

Rice is never, ever going to be good enough on the ball to play at the hub of midfield in a top side. Just look how much the Netherlands are pressing; he can’t cope with that. Expecting him to come in and improve upon Matic is pure folly.

Hopefully people are starting to see Rice is more like Phil Jones in CDM, rather than the next Carrick.

We dodged a bullet with Dier we need to dodge this bullet as well.

Dier and Rice are basically reminiscent of Barry and Parker.

We want the next Carrick not the next De Jong.

You can't really judge Rice off a singular game for England. While I do acknowledge he's not the greatest technically he's decent enough to mix it up. Sancho has been very under par for England (his overall games), Hudson Odoi made more of an influence given his opportunities in comparison.

Lingard to the average spectator would also be considered a good player on international duties but us who watch him domestically know he's rubbish.

Commentator singing his praises on my stream. I've only just started watching.
He has played well so far in the second half. controlling play well and breaking up the odd attack.

"Controlling play"? He's doing no such thing.

Doing a decent job Infront of the back 4 but little more than that.

This is no different to his standard game. He's decent positionally and in the tackle, but 'decent' isn't enough. On the ball he's way below the level needed for a top team. He's just so, so average.

Be nice if he started breaking the play up a bit more then. If you're in the team for that sole reason, you need to be a heck a lot better at it than he's currently demonstrating.

Christ you lot are overreacting. The whole team is getting beasted on possession and he is one of the few that seems to be having an impact against this.

As i said, hes been fine, nothing amazing, but on here if you are not amazing everything single game, you are average . Lots of players have just given standard performances this game. Hes a much better enforcer then Dier, thats for sure, Dier is better on the ball however

Longstaff will keep him out as next season progresses. Someone who can sit deep and spread tthe play while filling in defensive gaps will be worth a lot more to this side than Declan.

When you're 'nothing amazing' every single game, you are average, and you're certainly not good enough for top level football. He's taking the place of someone who could be more than just 'fine.'

He’s had tonnes of chances to turn and play a positive ball, tonnes.
Oh I see how this works.

Sancho did nothing apart from miss point blank. shit.

Kane has not led the line well and is reduced to fouling. shit.

Barkley. Well he is shit.

Rashford done nuffing really apart from score a pen. shit.

Kyle Walker has one job and he almost gifted Depay a goal. shit.

Ah goal. All defenders shit too and goalie shit.

If they're getting dominated in possession maybe that reflects on the defensive midfield no?

He has been invisible, hasn't imposed himself and offered nothing on the ball.

This is one game, but yeah lets forget his entire season hes had when he was the outstanding player in many matches

Should we also call Sterling average based off this game?

blaming this on one player. bloody hell. I honestly don't think y'all understand how football works especially when playing against a very technical possession side.

Its the benefit of playing for West Ham. He can have an average game and poor performances etc are put down as a minus on the side as a whole and easily forgotten while a good performance is put forward as if he does it every week.
He has more excuses for bad performances than great performances themselves.

You stop possession football by the team counter pressing - not just a single CDM vs the whole other team to be fair.

But he hasn't been outstanding. It's not just one match. This is what he does every game, except he's up against technically gifted opposition, and so he's struggling to get anywhere near them.

No, because Sterling is having an off game. This is Rice's standard game. Big difference there.

thank you for saying something that restores some faith in this bored. Its an obvious point admittedly but quite a few posters seem completely clueless.
