I wouldn't be comfortable with Lindelof as captain. Doesn't strike me as a leader at all. Also a pretty average player. De Gea makes the most sense if he stays but in truth this is an area where we're lacking big time. I can understand why Young is the default choice

I don't see Lindelof as captain tbf, but it could be one of him and Smalling considering they will probably be our first choice, and Smalling is senior fogure in the squad so it should be probably him.

De Gea I am not so sure, and I don't see Young and Mata as forst choice material so can't see the point in giving them the armband.

Under a tree.
Mctominay is the captain in waiting..

But for next season i think Ole will stick with Young with Smalling & Mctominay as vice

I'm expecting Maguire to come in and be given captaincy. Will be used to tempt him too, I think that's why it's not been chosen.

I don't really care. I don't think captaincy really has the same level influence it had 15+ years ago. For a lot of teams its just the best player, for us it seems to be who has been here the longest. Does any top side now have a proper charismatic, influential leader as captain? Maybe Kompany was the last one in the PL.

My only concern with it being Ashley Young is that it implies he is still going to be first choice again, and whilst I have nothing against him really, I'd like to see us move on from him as a starter.

Lindelof. I liked his reaction to conceding vs Huddersfield, going around talking to players, then the camera cut to Young doing nothing

What about Mata?

Been at the club a good while now, top role model and will play a fair few games.

I'm happy for Pogba if he can lead by example.

Would rather not make Pogba the captain unless he commits his long-term future to the club. It's a very bad look if your captain jumps ship after a year wearing the armband; don't want to be Arsenal. I would give it to Young and rotate it round several players to see if a natural leader emerges over the next 9 months.

Lindelof gets my vote as I think he will be a better player this season and I like the way he conducts himself on the pitch but being captain does not seem to have the same significance as it used to have. Nowadays if a player gets criticised for lack of effort or application he cries off to his agent and asks for a way out of the club....pathetic!

We hate to see it but Pogba is the natural choice here. He has the aura, the quality and the players see it in him too. It's up to management to cultivate it, and we've seen how it can be when done right, like at the World Cup.

This really does highlight what I truly believe is our biggest problem. We don’t have any leaders in our squad never mind our starting eleven, whatever that might turn out to be. I’m not sure Maguire, if he does eventually sign, is a natural leader either. We need somebody like Robbo or Keane that will “encourage” team mates to dig in when the going gets tough and will not be afraid to let them know when they are not pulling their weight.

As far as I see it, Lindelof has had a good 7/8 months, nothing spectacular, just solid. That’s great to see, in that he’s improving - but I would want more than that from a Captain. I don’t particularly see any leadership traits - which are clearly absent from the majority of our players! But to make him captain above our best player 5 out of 7 seasons or someone who is our longest serving player we need something more from him than: he is not as bad as Jones, Rojo or Bailly!
Think you need to read my original post and the come back to me, for reference:

DE GEA would be first choice but if he does not sign a new deal and is looking for a move next summer then Lindelof would be the next best available choice. Also, 7/8 good months? Would personally say 12/18 months, by far and away our best defender and IMO was by far our most consistent performer last year.

My word there will be a lot of very upset posters in here when Lindelof is not part of the first choice pairing.

Slim chance there will be new captain (not Young).

I wouldn't hope much.
I think it's more or less confirmed Young will be club captain, only thing that should be decided is, who will be on field captain as Young will be a back up.

Not confident if Young will be backup, but we'll just have to see that.

Yes, more or less Young is confirm club captain.
So far (one game sample, not too reliable I know), Mata gained the nod over Pogba, Smalling and McT.

"Confirm" Captaincy atm
1. Young
2. Mata
3. Smalling/Pogba ?

Lindelof has not been consistant for 12-18 months. Am pleased for him, and it’s good progress, but to suggest that’s captain material is jumping the gun.

You think he hasn't, I think he has, personally think since January 2018 he has been very consistent, you disagree, happy days.

Bar my first choice De Gea, who are the candidates:

Pogba - Christ No
Matic - No
Young - No
Smalling - Haha behave
Jones - No
Bailly - No
Mata - No

Running out of candidates here, if De Gea goes or says he wants to run down his contract and leave next summer, who do you suggest giving it to?

Add Harry Maguire to that list and I'd vote for him over any of the others mentioned. If DDG signs a new deal then I'd give it to him.

This shows we absolutely dont have enough leaders in the group. We have experience in smalling, Young and Mata but none are good enough to lead UTD.

At the mo, has to be Lindelof but I would give it to Pogba if Lindelof doesn't want it.

I get the feeling Mata, although one of my fave players over the years, is more of a sycophant than a driven leader. This was a reply to "jmack1234", sorry if it looks out of place.

Really? What makes you say that? Nice people tend to be respectful of others but who knows.

Don't like Captains that are not first choice. If De Gea signs a contract it has to be him. Senior player, experienced, undoubted first choice and a winner.

It’s a sad state of affairs - I think we can all agree on that!

The problem I have with Lindelof, along with my opinion that he’s done well for only just a few months, is what happens if/ when he hits a dip in form and/ or becomes mearly a squad player - which is far from an unlikely scenario. Especially with Maguire likely to come in and actually add some competition - a Smalling/ Maguire axis is a realistic option. We then have to take the captaincy off of him, we do t want to put a player in that position. What if a really good leader emerges over the next 12 months that is genuinely worthy to be captain - again do you take it off of Lindelof?

Personally (and this would be an unpopular decision!!!) id give it to Young.

Not because he’s our best player, or our most influential player - but because of the amount of change we are going through, it allows another 12 months for the right player to emerge. That may we’ll be someone like Maguire, it might even be Pogba if he decides to commit to Utd or DDG if he signs a new long term contract. It might even be Lindelof Who after another 12 months may emerge at a leader (which I don’t think he is at the moment). Taking it off of Young in 12 months time (whether he’s here in some capacity or not, will not be a big deal) and allows time for someone to step up.

Agree that it is a sorry state of affairs, personally think it is a bit harsh on Lindelof to say he has only had a good few months, I think that is selling him very short but against just my opinion mate.

I understand what you're saying re Young, if Maguire does come in, you could see him being a big time leader and potential captain going forward.

My only issue with that is for the last few years we have had Carrick/Valencia/Young all as bit part captains who are in and out of the side and did not really show much leadership during those years, which I think you could see on the pitch.

If we persist with Young who I can only see playing Europa/Cup games this year, it will be the same again, although I do get where you're coming from.

Looks like DDG is close to signing a new deal so fingers crossed it is given to him.

Lindelof seemed to have gained a good amount of respect from the squad judging by comments from poty awards if I recall, so maybe the best shout from those poll options
