Bale looks like the kind of guy who can't and doesn't truly want to make friends with his co-workers. A professional.
He's been dreadfully treated by Real Madrid. That seems fairly clear.

Yet, I can't imagine many have much sympathy for a guy on such wad, who has never given even the slightest hint he might respect our club.
It's excellent if we truly have said no thanks son to him.

Says a lot when after he scored Madrid's first goal today in the Arsenal friendly, only one teammate came over to congratulate him. Also read somewhere that he once threw a party and the only teammate to show up was Modric. Must suck to be such an outcast. While Valencia might have never bothered to learn English, at least he had Spanish speaking pals like Mata, Herrera and De Gea.
It is weird considering that Spanish people (in fact add there Portuguese and S. Americans) are some of the friendliest people I have known in my life. No idea how Bale has managed to be friendless in Spain.

I understand to some extent why Gareth Bale has had trouble at Real Madrid. He seems to be somewhat reserved and in some cultures, if you work with people then you're expected to factor them into your life far more than you'd want.

I think being part of Real Madrid would be rather claustrophobic - the endless media conferences and prying, the irrational fans, the drama queen culture there with the players-media-fans. However, like all professional footballers in the UK and Spain, less so in Italy and Germany, etc, he is grossly over-paid. Over-paid doesn't even begin to state it. Just like basketball players in the USA, some of whom are collecting more money to be mediocre and sit out their ridiculous contracts.

With this obscene money there also comes those things such sportsmen don't want to do - media conferences, meeting the fans, accepting a certain amount of loss of privacy, etc. The pay is much larger than the downside when you look at what Bale and are others are receiving. He signed on for this at Real Madrid.

It seems his Spanish is barely adequate and that is not good enough after his years there. Although he seems shy and is probably uncomfortable speaking because his Spanish accent is probably poor, it didn't stop David Beckham from learning enough basic Spanish to have a limited conversation in that lingo with the Spanish press and get along with his team mates.

Becks has never been academic - admitted once to hardly ever reading a book, doesn't have intellectual curiosity - but he is willing to fit in with people and has broadened his horizons in other ways since he first became known in the United team. Gareth Bale seems to have a difficult personality and wants to select his conditions although he signed on for ridiculous money precisely to do those other things that make you part of a professional sporting team.

BBC reporting off to China on a 3 year deal. Very surprised by that but I guess at least he will be getting games and not just sitting there taking the money to play golf. Presumably no more competitive teams were in for him so he has made the best of a bad situation, will be interesting to see if this plus the injury issues in their squad cause Real to get serious about Pogba now.

Just turned 30 and off to China? Bodes well with his competitive spirit shown in the last months. Should've taken a pay cut and do that pension move 3-4 years away from now..

I can only assume that even at a pay cut there were no clubs in for him that he or Real would consider. I am sure he would have taken a pay cut to go to somewhere like Bayern or even PSG but the whispers for a while have been that nobody in Europe wanted him and I guess this confirms it. Shame really because he definitely is good enough to play at the top level for a couple more years but Zidane has made it clear he has no future in Madrid so if China is the only alternative I guess he had to take it.

Baffling. Can’t take the medals off him but surely he wants to remain competitive

What a waste.

It's all his own fault. If he wanted to take a pay cut to a more meagre salary say, £250,00 a week, he could move to another top European club and see out his career at the top, instead he's going to choose money and toss it off in a joke league.

What a waste.

I kind of agree, as a Welshman I am gutted to see him wasting his talent in a Sunday League competition but he is out of a toxic environment and for the first time in at least 2 years going somewhere he is wanted so that is probably too good to turn down in the absence of serious offers in Europe. That is a few hundred grand off the payroll in Madrid and presumably a transfer fee received as well, I bet Raiola is licking his lips and we will soon find out how much influence Zidane has over transfer policy.

Don't think he had any offers in Europe even close to that though, it was what he wanted but every potential suitor made it clear they didn't want him at any salary. He bears some blame but the Madrid fans and media did such an effective smear job over the last 2 years that they ended up well and truly devaluing him to any potential buyers.

He is seriously moving to China at 30?
The idiot should have accepted one of the numerous offers we threw at him over the years

Excellent move for him. Keeps his salary. Lot safer and easier than moving back to the rigors of PL football and struggle.

Under a tree.
Wow, hes just purley in it for the money now if the China rumour is true. Surely he wants to stay in Europe to in the best condition for the national team at least

Hopefully he's leaving on a free, hate to see Real manage to pull off getting a massive fee for him

Raiola will be licking his lips. That's mind boggling sums that have been tossed around.

Still taking a step back, lower salary and at not the absolutely elite clubs but still top league would be much better for his career at this stage. Even at 33-34 he will no doubt get top dollar in China.

30 years of age, it's a waste, indeed.

He’s retired. I’m not sure why it bothers people so much.

Just so happened that his goal vs Barca in the Copa del Ray final came up on my youtube recommendations today, what a player he once was. He would have fitted in Utd so well.

A lot of posters here are jumping the gun with regards to Bale here, my guess is that Real are letting Bale go for free to China, whereas if a European top club were in for him then they wouldn't get that luxury (tabloids reckon they still wanted €60-80m for him).

This is basically Real Madrid forcing a player out, but not wanting him to go anywhere where he could come back to bite them on the arse.

Also the fact he's getting 1m a week is basically Bale's signing on bonus included into the salary.

Bale is would solve our right winger issue immediately as long as there is no health issue. He still hav 2-3 years of high level football. I would open a discussion with Real if I am Ed. No harm looking at the financial implications.

Will be on loan to Inter within 6 months
This is spot on. Just realized the club he is joining is owned by the same people as Inter and their season ends in December. He can have it both ways, pick up a million a week in China and get some top level football in Italy in the spring just like Beckham did after joining LA galaxy.

Bale might not want to take a pay cut though. I think Bale just wants to stay fit for Wales which he can do in China or Madrid, collect his money he is owed and not fight hard in the Premier League for the top 6 rat race.

Bale has part of a golf course in his garden. He might want to buy one or create one or have other big plans with the money he gets.

So what?

When he looks back on his footballing career is he going to get his old bank statements out and compare them to the other top players of his era?
No but he might get his Champions League, Copa del Rey, La Liga medals out and compare.

Going to China at 30 years old. This guy don't care about football.
Won everything he could win, still plays his best for his international team, he clearly cares about football.
Turning down a million a week when he knows he's past his best wouldn't neccesarily be a wise thing to do.

Right move for him, he's won more than most players have won in their careers. With the injuries becoming more frequent he's better off in a less superior league which may help him stay injury free. If anyone offered me double the wages to move to an easier job I'd be away like a shot.
