If city can play with a high line with Kompany who has less pace than Maguire then I think we'll be fine.

Actually Maguire is a lot like Kompany. Fantastic with the ball at his feet but suspect a bit defensively.
City also happens to have a brilliant midfield unfortunately, something we certainly don't possess.

For those complaining about the fee : The Glazers took a billion pounds out of the club. 80m is nothing. We hardly spent anything last year, and our revenues are the highest in England by some distance. Now we're finally spending according to our wealth. I'm sure when we bought Dwight Yorke for 12m back in the day everyone thought it was madness. I remember the same was said about Andy Cole at 8m. Even when we bought Ferdinand for 30m back in 2002, people said the money was too high. Let's see how it pans out.

You can't really blame other clubs for pricing their players higher whenever we are interested in their players. We sort of make them do it.

Hallelujah! The fact is we were going to get ripped off no matter what CB we brought in, everyone knows we're desperate. He's an upgrade on what we've got and is strong in the air and can play out from the back. Hopefully him and Lindelof can form a decent partnership.

He’s a good player and a welcome addition but people wonder why we are constantly taken advantage of and have a “United tax” added to every transfer, when we go through the same cycle constantly...play hardball and then as the window goes on and the desperation seeps in, we crack and pay well over the odds.

Leicester quoted a stupid amount and have played us perfectly to receive a world record fee for Harry Maguire...”world record fee for Harry Maguire” is a phrase I don’t think anyone ever expected to hear. I like him and everything and hoping he’ll form a good partnership but there’s no doubt that we’ve vastly overpaid for him.
Only time will tell if we've over paid for him.
People thought £75m for VVD was ridiculous, doesn't look so stupid now.

You would think but then that is a credit to Guardiola and his coaching staff. Not only what you said but they play with only one proper DM too with Silva and KDB alongside. Point is a lot of the credit for that goes to the coaching and their philosophy of keeping the ball so defense doesn't come under pressure.

We are far away from that.
Firstly Kompany wasn’t as slow as Maguire. Even if he was, at his prime he was world class and one of the top 10 defenders in the world. Doubt Maguire is anything close to that as of yet.

If you put the price into the context of this window (e.g. Arsenal paying over 70 million for a winger from the French league) then it's no surprise Maguire costs 80 million.
I'm really happy if it's actually true this time. He's a clear upgrade on our centre backs, and at a good age to be a leader for our otherwise young defensive unit.
Now let's go full muppet and shift our Belgian cart horse for Dybala

The thing is that everyone would be happy to pay a world-record fee for one of the world's best or potentially best defenders. It's just a lot of us don't think Maguire is anywhere near that category.

I mean, we desperately need a right winger and I'd be glad if the club paid huge money for one - but I still wouldn't want us to spend 120m on Zaha, for example.
Obviously we don't want to spend record fees on rubbish players, but Maguire is one of the best CB's around right now. We have the English tax to deal with also, so a big fee is required.

As long as he or any other player improves us, I dont care what we spend.

Because he is relatively slow, particularly on the turn. And if we are intent on pressing high, that involves a high line for the defence. So if he is paired with an other average paced CB, how do you think that's going to go.

Now if you argue overall he is good enough to improve us enough to get top 4, maybe I'd agree, but I don't particularly think he has a great ceiling.
Interesting sky sports are showing a few clips now, and balls into the space behind him he seems to deal with just fine recovering well and using his strength to block the route to goal.

God knows how Pallister and Blanc got by

He’s going to be a massive upgrade. Defending set pieces and distribution from the back is areas we’ve struggled in for years. Having two centre backs who can come forward with the ball should make a massive difference to the midfield as well.

Another midfielder who’s comfortable under pressure and we’re hugely upgraded on last year.

It does seem like ot was £80m up front. No add ons.

A few weeks ago I thought no more than £80m, any more and it would be to much. Seems like we got my 'just about acceptable amount reached'.

Moving on to the next transfer of a forward and a midfielder. If we get quality in both positions, then I'll be over the moon.

Ramos, Umtiti, Pique, Koulibaly, van Dijk, Laporte, Godin, Silva, Bonucci, Varane - is he better than any of them?
No but he is younger than practically all of them, and he is a lot less injuryprone that half of them.

Wouldn't mind seeing further down the line our 1st choice back four being awb, Tuanzebe, Maguire and shaw.

i didn't know Ed was supposed to know the future as well
It's called judgement. We all knew this would happen but Woodys poor judgement and lack of valuing preseason meant he decided to try and play a hand he didn't have.

your Point being ?
One is a season later the other a full decade. Can’t compare really. To me though I’m not bothered either way. 60m? 80m? Does it really matter? We’ve got our man and that’s all that matters

Exactly. £80m upgrade should be a Van Dijk level step up. Just don’t think Maguire is.
It's over now. Time to start supporting our new CB. He's surely better than any of the other 6 CBs. Better in the air, confident on the ball. Best is: wants to be at OT and win things. Glad the saga's over.

Any player that keeps Jones and Rojo out of the starting lineup is worth every cent of the 80m in my opinion. We were ever going to progress as a team with a backline that flimsy.

If you support Ole then you have to (begrudgingly) give him the benefit of the doubt when he goes against popular opinion and says Maguire at 80m will be worth it. Conversely if the signing proves poor value for money then he'll be held accountable for the money wasted

They say his weak side is his pace and easily being beaten one on one one situation.

Crazy amount of money, but there were hardly ready-made choices, and we're rich as feck. Now get Dybala, and hopefully another player and we should be able to comfortably qualify for UCL, and hopefully build from there.

I can't understand why everyone is so obsessed with the amount we're paying. Sure, he's no VVD, but let's be fair, we're not signing anyone better for 80 mil.

Also, it's not money straight out of our own pockets, why care so much? The lad has proven himself in the Prem, is a starter for the national side and still has room for improvement.

Arsenal signed Pepe for about the same price just after a single good season in the farmer's league, cut Ed some slack.

Have those who dont rate Maguire actually watched him?

Baffles me, wont improve us much, what a comment, he l improve us massively

Hes aerially dominant especially from set pieces ........which is a big weakness
He can dribble the ball out from the back.......who else can?
He offers an offensive aerial threat......who else does bar Smalling every blue moon.
He can pass more than 6 yards accuratley ....what other centre back can?
He can pass to his striker, into space and not just sideways or backwards...who else does?
He has a voice and leads.....who else does?

Now tell me he why he wont improve us much?
Yeah, we've signed a defender who's dominant in the air which is a problem for all our defenders and even our goalie. We'll also have an aerial threat on set-pieces which we've barely had in recent years and he can play with the ball at his feet like Lindelof which means we'll have more space for Pogba and others going forward. Is he without weaknesses? No. But the strengths FAR make up for the deficiencies. Considering how shit we've been having to play Young at RB and Smalling or Jones at CB we've probably improved close to 20% with those two signings alone. Good players with added dimensions replacing liabilities.
