Cant judge until Thursday but looks like another weak transfer window when it's clear we need signings.
If we'd have got Dybala and moved Lukaku on we'd still have clear issues (CDM, CM, RW) but I'd have felt we've got some more creativity alongside Pogba, but right now, another bad window. Improved defence but weakened midfield and attack.

We've spent £147m net so far. The most in the league. Probably got another deal left too.
We are probably going to sell Lukaku for £70-80 mil too. So our net spend should be around £70-80 mil which will be almost the same we spent last summer. That is not good enough. Apparently we are one of the richest, up there with Real and Barca.

This is exactly what we should be doing. It's going to become apparent pretty quickly that we aren't going to be in the mix in the top 3/4 in the league this year, so lets just take the pressure off a bit, play the kids and try to make the season fun, rather than a long, dreary slog.

Hopefully Solskjaer takes this approach rather than sticking with dross like Lingard.
That would be all well and good, but if we fail to finish in the top 4 to 6, i'd see quite a few players start to get really annoyed and seriously question their futures here.
We could be in a seriously bad way with quite a few players who want to leave etc. Playing the kids is all well and good, but we can't afford to burn them out, they need to be introduced slowly.

You'd think that Ole would recognise that with the midfield we have, and having lost Herrera and Fellaini, we need to strengthen. If we have any injuries, which lets face it, they're almost certain to happen, we're kinda screwed.
Agreed. A midfielder is a must and if we don't bring one in then we better pray that the likes of Fred really step up this season or we're in trouble. Not enough quality and depth.

We're top 2 or 3 for net spend since Moyes took the reigns aren't we?

Not many clubs can say they've hit or broken the £80m mark three times.

We were never signing there 6 or 7 players people think we need in one window, irrespective of what money is or is not available. The fact people are referring to it as embarrassing is quite frustrating.

Very least we need a centre mid. Right winger 100% won’t happen. It’s a shame Sancho didn’t happen, as he would’ve been a game changer. We need to add some more creativity in midfield.

Exactly. I think we're going to do better than last season but this issue is going to hamper us. We're too reliant on Pogba.

The fact we've gone from rebuild to rebuild doesn't mean we skip the next one.

You fair weather fans are never happy. The team is improving. We've got some brilliant young players too but you'd not be interested in them because they aren't fancy dan signings
People keep parroting the amount we've spent in comparison to other teams as if it's a relevant talking point. While the volatility of the market is largely to blame for the lack of general transfer activity, most of our rivals don't require a massive revamp like United does.

As it stands, we've theoretically solved half of the jig-saw puzzle with the acquisition of AWB and Maguire, but it's clear as day that we need an injection of talent in several other key areas. This isn't a new dilemma. One of them being on the right wing, a position that's been left vacant for what, 6-years? The glaring hole in our midfield, especially after the loss of Herrera, shines brighter than Klopp's new pearly whites. Regardless of what the teams around us do or don't do, Ole, Woodward, and the Glazer's goal should ultimately remain the same; challenge for the title. To do that, we need more players.

It's not exactly an outlandish request considering our net spend from the previous two transfer windows adds up to a meager £53.4m. If (and emphasis on if) Lukaku is sold for say, £75m, that £147m is then reduced to £72m. Now, imagine that exact scenario coupled with Maguire being the last signing of the summer. I can picture it now; Romelu gazes proudly upon his top speed stats like a father would his newborn son as he touches down in Italy. Meanwhile, United fans are treated to a new variation of, "there's no value in the market." All of a sudden, £126m net spend over three transfer windows (two of which being summer windows) doesn't look very impressive at all considering our financial pull and the fact that we drastically need to improve.

The aforementioned scenario is a very real possibility considering the deadline day is about to smack us in the face, and for what it's worth, a lot of outlets have reported as much as well. It's easy to understand why people are so upset or at the very least, find our current situation extremely disconcerting. Having such an incredibly poor finish to last season has also exacerbated the issue. Granted, there's still a few days left so not all hope is lost. Who knows. If there are no further developments, then what the hell have we've been doing this entire summer?

I hate to break it to you, but I imagine most of them fecked off many moons ago considering we haven't exactly been pulling up trees over the past 6-years, have we?

The Athletic launches and has a "United could be buying one more!" story to lure people. No different than the tabloids.
It doesn’t have a story like that. They seem to have got it from a Q&A with the journalists this afternoon but as far as I can see the United journalist says there will be at least one more. Nothing about last seasons display.

I'm not arguing that we're better off, I'm just taking issue with you saying that the kids are no better than they were last year. You only have to see what these same kids were producing last year and compare it to this year's efforts.

They are seen as much more part of the squad than they ever were under Jose. They have been played the whole way through preseason and have been getting serious and consistent minutes on par with the other squad players like Smalling, Jones, Mata, et al.

For what its worth, I agree that it's a massive risk putting them in right now, but there's no use crying and gnashing your teeth over it. Support the team through the season. That's what we're here for. I'd rather look at this season as a season where the likes of Greenwood and Gomes have the opportunities to really establish themselves, than to complain over what could have been with missed signings.

I also think its readily apparent that Ole knows where the issues are, but he's constrained by a board who don't seem to realise the damage they are causing to the team by their ignorance of the sporting aspect of running the club.
I didn't say that's the position that you in particular were arguing. It is however the position taken by the person I was having the exchange with.

I also didn't say the kids are not better than last year, I said at this moment we don't have substantial evidence that they are. They may very much prove so throughout the season, but preseason friendlies don't carry much weight for me, and before agreeing or making statements that we are better off attacking wise going into this season than we were last year, even with a potential Lukaku sale, I'd rather see how the kids get on when the competitive games start.

Also, I don't see what me questioning the decision-making in potentially not buying any more players has anything to do with "supporting the team through the season"?!

I'd be astounded if we didn't sign a midfielder. Clear negotiating strategy. Again, how people don't see through press releases is beyond me. If we brief the press with positive things people say it's BS, and of we brief them things like this then it's incompetence.

Since 2013, we have spent more than everyone bar one. The money has been largely wasted, as the recruitment strategy has been awful (signing players of a similar ilk to Dybala, funnily enough).

This summer we've spent more than anyone, but of course we're starting from a worse position due to past errors.

I think we'll get another in, and possibly two depending on what's happening with Lukaku. Even if not, splashing £130m on the defence should be more than enough to close the small gap to 4th (Arsenal and Chelsea are both weaker- the things written about Arsenal in here are all ridiculous, and all based on the Pepe signing which could flop massively. Their defence and midfield are both weaker. Chelsea lost their best player and have a transfer ban).

Then next summer we'll have to spend our resources on the midfield/ attacking area, and hopefully be in a position to challenge the top 2 a little better. The following summer we'll have to add whatever is missing in order to be genuine contenders.

This is how long it takes to fix 6 years of awful recruitment. We'll finish this window having spent around a third of our annual income on transfer fees alone, ignoring new contracts and signing on/ agent fees. Then we have astronomical wages to pay for the rest of the year.

People in here seem completely unaware or oblivious to real life football (this isn't aimed at you directly, btw). It's a tough market, with people asking daft sums of money for average players. So far it's been a good window, and there is no excuse to get in the top 4.

If we get in a top midfielder, it's a great window.

People also moan that we don't give youth a chance. Blocking all routes for the youth with new signings clearly isn't the way to go. This year I expect 4th place, but whilst demonstrating a clear identity and style worthy of United. The following year 3rd/ 4th again, but showing signs of being close to the top 2. The following year, we need to be fighting for the title, whilst accepting we might not win it.

What I have described is very similar to what Klopp did. He started from even further back than us, and spent less money in his first couple of seasons than we have this summer alone.
You make some very good points but I’m a little more skeptical then you for several reasons.

Getting Maguire and AWB will add stability and improve our defense but what worries me is that we don’t have the right type of players to our preferred 4231 formation. Using Pogba similar to how he plays with France is in my opinion a bad idea. His NT is full of world class quality on almost every position so when he (PP) has a bad game with them they don’t suffer to the same extent as we do.

Against AC Milan our midfield was totally outnumbered.

Mata and Pereira was operating in now mans land and because of this our tactic and high pressing collapsed after 20 minutes. It was like a replay of the end of last season. We can’t go into the new season with almost the same players and the same formation and expect different results. We are short of creativity up front and when we can’t keep possession like the top teams then we once again is depending on individual brilliance instead of methodical team work. How can our manager implement a successful identity and style when the team is so unbalanced and short of quality?

So buying a creative player similar to Dybala/Eriksen is almost as important as finding a replacement to Matic.

I’m perfectly aware of the financial reality and that we can’t overhaul our squad in one window but at the moment we are shockingly short of quality in two positions. DM and AMF. Maybe it’s worth to take a gamble with at least one of those positions to increase our chances to finish top four. Relying on our youngster is a huge gamble when every point is so important. If things go south then I’m not sure United is the right place to be if you’re young and inexperienced.

If we’re done this window I can’t see us in the long run continue with a 4231 formation. Using Pogba and McTominay in almost every game the first two month can easily backfire later in the season. As it stands they are the only two midfielders good enough to start against the better teams. If we start with a Matic and we start to lose games then you can imagine the reactions from supporters and media.

I really hope you’re right and I’m wrong but I can’t help myself being pessimistic if we can’t find at least one more quality midfielder who can fit in almost immediately.

Carrick seems to be doing the ground work for a potential move for Longstaff it seems.

That seems ominously like stuff coming out about Moyes. Like to study players first, use network etc. Problem is...and due respect to Ole....how big is his network? Will our talent pool be based on those with links to Phelan, Giggs and Carrick?

In fairness to Moyes, a diligent and researched approach to transfers would have been a very welcome trait. He didn't last long enough to show his worth in that because he was so shit at all the other stuff, but I'd rather Ole take a similar approach to transfers than a scattergun one.

It's all nice and a great read but how is this going to help Ole when he is sacked in December after persisting with the likes of Matic, Mata and Lingard?

No we will spend that on an attacking player if he leaves. Probably be no more net spend though now as Lukaku sale will cover the last potential signing.

There’s some detail in the article worth paying attention to I think. Some of the links used to study Wan Bissaka for instance are not exactly from the inner circle. If that’s how it goes, then Ole would have a friend almost every where in football. He’s played for a huge club at the very highest level for years. He’s had Argentine teammates, Brazilians, Portuguese etc and more, and that’s just him, let alone those in his team. If we’re talking about picking up the phone and asking someone, his reach would be limitless, even if he has to ask someone to ask someone.

Even then, I doubt his recruitment is solely based on his report, but it will form part of his strategy. After all, Wan Bissaka or James have to first be identified as a target before he does his checks, so he obviously knows the profile of the players he wants already.

I thought PSG were ditching their marquee cock extension signings after how much of a clusterfeck Neymar has been? Oh well Dybala supposedly wanted PSG so at least he gets it now. Enjoy being the new Javier Pastore I guess.

So it seems our transfer window is just a huge coincidence of staff knowing people.
Some would perhaps call it - use your sources to get the right people in. It is fairly common in business-life I have heard. You know….references ?

This defeatism baffles me. Very close to being top 4 last year and now with clear extra strength in defence and Rashford, Martial and McTominay a year older.
I just don't think the quality is there. Midfield is weaker than last season, our attack will be too if Lukaku leaves, De Gea looks human after all, we lost 6 of our last 10 games (no win in 5) going into the summer and have a novice manager in charge.

I'd much sooner have some fun and play the kids (exuberance of youth and all that), than have to endure a tumescent season of watching Lingard/Mata/Matic/Darmian et al attempt (and fail) to grind out results every week.

That would be all well and good, but if we fail to finish in the top 4 to 6, i'd see quite a few players start to get really annoyed and seriously question their futures here.

Like who? Pogba wants out anyway and will definitely leave next summer. De Gea is about to sign a new deal. None of the rest have any business complaining about playing for a midtable side - they aren't good enough.

I wouldn't mind him here. Really like the look of him whenever I see him play.
Same. I think he would do a good job for us. I also think that a move would be a boost for him.
