You're describing a water carrier. Someone who harassed, worked his socks off but ultimately had 0 end product. He lost possession too often by looking for a foul or poor control, smashed many crosses against then shins of defenders, made the wrong choices with his final pass when it mattered (notably the pass to Martial). That's not good enough for a RW of a team aspiring to be top 4. Drawing a yellow card is not an indication of being a threat. I expected more actual threat from him. Hopefully he'll improve, he's still young, but he doesn't seem ready.
As for you last question, when was the last time we had a right winger? That's the time we had all of the above and a lot more. All our other rivals seem to have it.
Those crosses resulted in corners which with the likes of Maguire now become potential goal scenarios. He also linked well with Wan Bissaka too.
I appreciate he did not set up a goal but he clearly was causing Wolves some problems particularly in the second half with his pace.
I absolutely agree he isn’t a top 4 winger at the moment but he’s doing the basics of what we need for the system to work. Our higher quality players Pogba, Martial and Rashford should take the responsibility for now of the more productive football.
Wolves defended with a deep block and considering his age and that this was his first premier league start I see more positives than negatives from him. He will learn the movements of Rashford and Martial as he plays with them more but for once it was refreshing to see a wide RW spreading the play for United instead of us being so narrow and easy to counter.
I think he will come good as a rotation first team player.
He also had zero quality on the ball, was bullied by Jonny for the whole game, didn't create a single goal scoring chance from what I can remember. He was a bit better in the second half where he drew fouls on the counter etc.
His movement was also not great when AWB would advance with the ball, he wouldn't make any runs in behind Jonny which was just odd
He did not have zero quality on the ball why exaggerate? He made sensible passes in the majority and made some good incisive runs. He wasn’t bullied by Jonny he was fouled a lot yes but I got the sense more that he was being fouled and pushed because they didn’t know what else to do against his pace.
His dribble into the box to pass to Wan Bissaka was positive attacking play and while he personally didn’t play a final ball to a goal scoring opportunity there was a lot of good pieces of play attacking wise from him.
He wasn’t making runs in behind when there was no space to do so! Wolves had a very deep block which meant when AWB progressed forward there was no space in behind so James took up a supportive position.
I wonder how many of the posters here have coached before when people are so critical of an ok performance.
I’m not saying it was outstanding but to say it was poor given the context is unfair.
I stand by my belief he will come good soon.
