Imagine Kim Clijsters telling Serena Williams on social media she looks like some caricature from the Jim Crow era. That's basically what happened.

It isn't that uncommon. Many black people have normalised those types of jokes to fit in culturally in the work place. Also not all black people know the historical racial connotations of certain things. Black people can also be ignorant to certain things
I've witnessed this sort of thing personally in high school where my class mate kept calling a Kenyan guy a "walking fudge pop" It was only funny until the black guy slapped his arse so hard the beats by dre headphones flew 50 miles north east off his head. 2 hours later in history class his face was still red. Maybe these two think jokes like this are fine but some take heavy offence to these type of things and they should.

I honestly don't care about professional critics or criticism from some hipster websites, journals, news agencies and all the rest. What really matters is how the general public rates it and people absolutely loved it, especially in the black community in the US.
You asked why nobody was as outraged for Chapelle and I'm telling you why: he's a fecking comic. Satire is literally his job. The same way a comic can disrespect and embarrass a an audience member or heckler, but a footballer can't. The same was Louis CK can get away with saying the N-word but a co-worker of mine can't. It's simple.

So many people don't actually know what racism is. The mind boggles at some of the half-baked rationalisations and false equivalences being spouted in this thread. Feckin tin tin... Jesus
I still remember the days that you couldn't sit with a tin tin on the bus. Simpler times.

Can't be bothered reading the whole thread, but I can only presume the people outraged by this heavily disliked the new Dave Chappelle show.
not bothering to read anyones opinion but you're just going to generalise the feck out of them anyway? Great contribution.

Making fun of someones looks is ok.
Making fun of someones looks based on historically racist stereotypes is not ok. It isn't that hard to grasp. A white person can make fun of a black persons looks and vice versa, just don't use historically racist shit

It isn't that difficult. Nobody cried when Bernado made a joke about Mendys dress sense before (and I am not talking about the wearing no clothes joke)
Maybe I'm ignorant, I just treat people as humans and don't alter my behavior depending on the race of the person I'm interacting with.

I don't know the cartoon he posted, I assumed it was just a harmless cartoon. If it's used to mock black people then he was wrong to post it. One thing I will say is racial sensitivities are far greater in the UK and the US than they are in Portugal.

If Mendy was upset than fair enough, I'm just not a fan of the twitter mob who will try to get him "cancelled" now.

Everyone has feelings. Stuff happened and still happens everywhere. Portuguese are made fun of in france and england and suffer from racism also. It's not a "black people thing"

It's impossible to create normal relations beetween people of diferent colours and then keep searching for racism in their interaction. You are fomenting in people to be afraid or keep measuring the way they interact with their friends. That will only create a bigger division.

You guys really love to call everyone ignorant. Such privilege
Portuguese suffer from racism in England and France,it's not a black peuple thing" So many things wrong with that statement.

Mendy once did a joke to Bernardo when he was walking past a construction site that he was going to work. This joke is based on the stereotype that all portuguese in france work in construction. Should i be mad at mendy because he was "racist"?

Another time, Mendy stepped on the portuguese national team jersey that bernardo gave him. Should i be mad because of the lack of respect toward the portuguese nation?

Of course not, because thats their relationship

I saw the Dave Chappelle show.
There were some jokes in there. But as Dave said" You know what you're going to get when you click on my face"
For Silva to do this in today's climate is the height of stupidity. Publicly comparing Mendy to some sort of "chocolate jiggaboo"?!
What's next, Tom and Jerry sambo cartoon pics.
They may find it funny between themselves, but that's between them.
Imagine Mendy plays at an opponents ground and a section of fans call him that. Is that racist?
Sterling must be shaking his head at all this.
And people referencing Tin Tin for Kevin De Bruyne..Don't even know where to start with that.

Here I was thinking this was going to be an innocent thread about Bilva's insane form in recent weeks, and maybe Pep upped his dosage or something.

But nope.

Racism, yet again

If he posted that in the US he would get far worse than he is getting here from black twitter my friend. Did you not see what happened to Gucci?

Also yes the part about not knowing the context of the cartoon is the definition of ignorance. When it is pointed out though why continue to make a case?

Black people loving a black comedian whos fan base is predominately black.. shock horror
I don't get what you want to say with this comment.

I just believe this way of thinking is hypocritical because it's all about the intent. Joking us just joking, whether you do it as a way of living or just having fun. Of course it's not acceptable to say things in a malicious or aggressive way but we have to be smart enough to differentiate those cases.

A lot of my favourite artists, musicians, comedians, actors are from that community so I have an interest and follow lots of stuff on the news and social media. It's not hard to find out how well received the Chappelle show was.

What's the issue? Mendy responded with laughter. They are friends.

Ask yourself this, if he had De Bruyne next to Tin-Tin, would you be offended?

100% this

They are friends having a laugh. This outrage culture is a complete joke.
This is a completely clueless post, but after your posts in a thread discussing homophobia in football I'm not surprised

If you're offended that's fine. Everyone has the right to be offended. My point was he sent the message to Mendy, who didn't appear to take offence, so why are we making a giant deal out of it? Mendy liked the tweet...

What? I'm being serious, why would that be an issue? People rated it extremely highly everywhere, I've also seen interviews with a lot of black celebrities from different industries - they all loved it and say everyone else does too.

No he sent it to the world in public on twitter. He did not DM Mendy. Whether Mendy liked the tweet or not is irrelevant.

But I'm saying the truth. I'm not condoning racism, all I'm saying is people should be allowed to joke in public and if people can't do it any more, then comedians should not be allowed to either. Just as you said it. Make it straightforward for everyone, we can either joke about stuff or we can't, being a professional should not matter, that's my whole point.

I know.
You are currently digging a bit of a hole for yourself suggesting that interviews from black celebs is representative of the opinion of the general black community.
Its just wrong so I am telling you to back away from that line that is all. Trying to help you out there.

The only common thing here is stereotypes really. Doing that between 2 guys in private who know each other ok, posting this in public generates reactions that may be interpreted as racism.

Regarding the rest, it’s unbearable really to read the condescending posts who tell that Mendy should have been offended, and if he didn’t well maybe he wasn’t smart enough. And then everyone gets surprised why morons like Trump get elected.

Oh, ok, I see. Well I just referenced the interviews to fact check my argument. It's true that my only way of knowing is from virtual sources as I don't live in the US. I still think people's reactions on social media, youtube can be a good measuring stick but I see why someone can criticise me for using this so again, fair enough.

You don’t? Honestly this is what they want to listen really. You’re not entitled to have a different opinion, because if you don’t repeat the same things over and over again it’s racism, it’s ignorant, it’s dumb, it’s this or that.

That's some nice generalisation that you are doing, very "woke". As I said, Chappelle had no problem in making racist and offensive jokes, the public both at the stage and all those watching at home gave it the highest rating so it seems people don't actually care that much.
Not being woke, just being realistic and pragmatic (42 yo white guy who grew up in a completely different era). We end up having this same tedious conversation on a monthly basis on this site. What is it about the right to be "free" to make racist jokes that is so important?

As for people not caring that much, I think a racist joke probably works better if your a comedian who is known for shock value rather than a Portugese footballer running out unfunny tropes from the Black & White Minstrel era.

If Mendy (or someone else) posted a picture of De Bruyne along with the milky bar kid, would it be deemed racist? Genuine question.
