Sorry but since when if I make a public mistake I have to receive mandatory education by anyone? Really, this is borderline levels of arrogance. Or do you presume he is stupid enough to need mandatory education? Where do we stop next? Stop with the crap everybody that doesn’t think or behave like me is racism, that’s just insane arrogance, or are you the only person here mandated to educate someone else on racism?

Ffs, I was migrant on other country some years ago, not going to say where, I had some bad experiences regarding xenophobia towards the fact I am from Portugal and because I had that experience I will say that every citizen from that country is xenophobic?

Really, if someone makes a mistake he needs to correct this, not receiving mandatory education lessons.
If that happened to you then that was also wrong and that person or people that did that need education as well. 2 wrongs don't make a right. If someone makes a mistake that stupid then yes they need to educate themselves so they don't make that mistake again. In my job if someone makes a joke like that they straight up get fired not even education.

Xenophobia isn't right and shouldn't be tolerated. Racism isn't right and shouldn't be tolerated. If someone is ignorant or makes a mistake then they need to educate themselves on why its not the right then to do. If they continue to do said things after being educated they will and should be punished.

Lastly did you read Silva's reply to it all? He doesn't sound like someone who understands what he did is wrong or that he will planning to research why it was wrong.

No he should have the right to decide and think first of what he did was wrong or not, later if he reaches the conclusion what he did was wrong then take the necessary measures to correct that, not being forced into some sort of punishment because it looks good on the public eyes to receive mandatory education. My opinion on the subject, and I am entitled to have it, after all we live in free societies.
And what should happen to him if he does similar again without taking the mandatory education? Surely at that point the punishment would be way worse.

Doesnt mean he is racist. He isnt exactly disliking someone based on the colour of their skin. If anyone takes offense then its a damming sign of the times.

Are we deciding for Mendy what he should and shouldn't find acceptable banter between friends?
Mendy can decide for himself what he finds acceptable (or what he'll put up with for the sake of fitting in with a workplace)

Except he didn't say it to Mendy, he broadcast it to the rest of us as well. Which yeah, means other people get to comment and criticise, and in the case of an organisation like Kick It Out they get to argue that it goes against the policy initiatives of the FA and UEFA, and gives the wrong message to players and fans.

Mendy might be immune to Silva's banter, he may even find it amusing - though I can't see the humour in the image or the video myself. The chances are a kid growing up in Manchester won't find it funny if it gets repeated as a comparison to him on his twitter/Instagram/snapchat. It matters and Silva does need to understand why it's not acceptable, even if it makes him laugh.

Banter is fine, but how do these players not realize that when you put this on Twitter you will receive backlash. Do they not notice all the camera's and journo's around the pitch when they play? Send it to him on Whatsapp dumbas.

Yeh, it's a little odd really. Not sure why he enjoys the racist banter so much!

Private joke between consenting friends are fine.

Going public with his profile is stupid because for every person who sees it as a bit of banter there are 100 who think he is the spawn of satan.

Maybe he just doesn’t care

The mistake you are making is to assume that educating someone who has committed a racist act is a punishment.

More Silva thinking it is very funny. While I don't find it particularly offensive it also just doesn't seem very funny!
Oh I agree, hes just coming across like an ignorant twat, sadly I would say due to the bubble they live in most are a bit out of touch with reality. I have a black work college and was just asking him about this and what his views were and he just rolled his eyes and grinned and said "white people are crazy".

I can't repeat this enough on here. No one is claiming him to be racist. No one is saying he dislikes anyone based on their skin colour. What do you mean if anyone is upset about it. There are people who are upset about it. People of colour are more emboldened these days to speak out when we feel wrong, not suffer in silence and just accept it, like things in the 60s in the 70s. I guess this is the period the likes of you wanna hark back to.

He has that look. Looks like an annoying guy.
He's rat faced.

I'm a city an and whilst I obviously can't speak for any other city fan, I think it will be a good thing if he has to have some kind of education class and also good if that's made public

If nothing else, education now stops him repeating the same mistake. That means less chance of being offensive in future and being selfish, less chance of a ban in future for repeating the mistake/offence (delete according to your viewpoint)

A ban would IMO be unjustified, but I am bias in one direction just as United fans, to one degree or another, are bias in the other
Banning him would be ridiculous. Sensitivity training is enough.

So it was a joke between friends. Mendy wasn’t offended by it, but everyone else is offended on his behalf?

Should we be offended with groundskeeper willy? Or Apu? Or the brits with bad teeth joke? Or the angry Irish leprechaun on the simpsons?

Welcome to 2019 where everyone else get offended on someone else’s behalf.

Thats exactly how it is. If I was to get annoyed at these things all the time then I wouldn't be able to live in England alot of the time I muster a "come on man" or "thats some stupid sh**" otherwise to an extend you have to just pretend to be ok with it.

Racism is the act of being discriminatory. Treating someone as though they are inferior in some way.

In modern society however, it appears to have been redefined into meaning any sort of action or comment that references a persons skin colour (for instance). If someone is black, they are black. It is not racist to say that they are black, it is simply a factual statement about a physical characteristic - just like calling a tall person tall, or a blonde person blonde. If you are then drawing stereotypes, or using offensive language, or treating that person in an inferior way in some sense, then that is racist.

As time goes on, it seems to be more and more the case that any comment or reference to the colour of someones skin, instantly gets you branded a racist. This is bollocks in my view.

On the original topic - it was stupid of Bernardo to post that on social media because it would inevitably cause a load of shit and get him landed in hot water. Its not racist in my view though. Making a humorous comparison of someone to a cartoon character. The acid test I always tend to put on these things is "what if the recipient was white?" - if he had compared a white teammate/player to a white cartoon character, i'm pretty sure that nobody would bat an eyelid. It is a dangerous double standard, and whilst it can be argued that it is different due to historical racism, I am never a fan of that mode of thinking; the past is the past, leave it there and move on as a progressive society.

Why would you compare it to if the person was white? White people and black people do not have the same history in modern society.

Why are the times damning? It's historically the best time to be alive. If someone is offended by something you said or did, wouldn't it just be easier to say that you're genuinely sorry and all of us can move on? Stupidity isn't worthy of a debate. In this case my very subjective view is that B. Silva was being stupid and then doubled down instead of apologizing.

Indeed - there is absolutely a history of racism predominantly from white people to black people, however for me, that needs to be left in the past if we are to move forward as a society. Acknowledge it as one of the many heinous wrongs of mankind, acknowledge the fact that the vast majority of those generations are now dead and buried, and move forward with a society where everyone is equal. You cant have a truly egalitarian society where large double standards exist in how people are treated and what is socially acceptable, due to historical wrongdoings - that is my view.

I can also help educate you on this phenomenon in the black community called anti-blackness which has caused many black people to bleach themselves to death. Or why in many african countries people of lighter skin tones are seen as more beautiful.

I used a similar example to another poster and I’m going to use it again: if me and my Jewish friend are joking around and I say ‘go on, get in the gas chamber, you!’, you would understand that other Jews are allowed to be offended due to the historical implication of such a ‘joke’, even though it was directed at my one friend and he found it funny...so I’m unable to see why you and other posters can’t use the same logic here.

Because has alot to do with the general population. Normalising these kinds of jokes is not good for society. Think of the amount of kids for example that follow him on social media. Even if just 2 or 3 kids see this and go to the black class mates and make the joke that is a bad thing. Unfortunately these guys are role models theres nothing we can do about it so the content they show the world is important. Him making private jokes with his friend fine. Him posting this to million people who can easily be influenced is why this is an issue.

We will never move forward if people always bring up the past. You can not have double standards on racism.

I remember when Bernard Hopkins said to Joe Calzaghe he would never let a white boy beat him. It was swept under the carpet.

Every race at one time or another has face hardships, obviously some more than others. We cannot have double standards on racism.

What I would say to that is racism isn't something that is dead and gone and doesn't exist. I experience it everyday from a old woman who decides to move seats when Im near to being in a boardroom carrying out a presentation whilst a room of old white men ignore me and ask my white colleague questions.

This post is reeking with ignorance I don't even know where to begin. This "what if he was white" argument is false. Historical context matters. Google the history of black people having been compared to animals (literally) and the caricatures that emanated from them (leading into this offensive cartoon. The original maker of the cartoon said he wouldn't have drawn it the way he did if he had gone back in time). Educate yourself and then come back and say that it would be the same. You really think calling a black person a monkey has the same connotations as calling a white person a monkey? In 2019, you don't know the difference?
How are we supposed to move on as a society when people still think like this.

I'm not sure if being friends is a good enough excuse really.

If you went up to a random dark skinned man like Mendy on the street and shouted "I can't see you only your clothes" you'd be punched in the face immediately.

Mendy is probably trying not to cause a scene, it's just not very good banter at all. Skin / hair colour / weight never is.

What are you on about? We literally live in a society that is built around one race being lower than the other. Its systemic white and coloured are not equal in this society.

You are so far from the point...
No one here thinks Bernardo is some KKK member burning crosses in peoples gardens. No one has even called him racist. But he has to have the cop on that said post is offensive to black people so its a racist post. It just is.

Mendy has nothing in common with that character other than skin colour. We've all heard genuine racists say shit like "they all look the same". This post by Bernardo fuels that. Its a post that while not racist in his intention, is hurtful to thousands of people who have heard comments like that, who are fighting to take that out of society (what kind of position has he put Sterling in). Its like the Griezmann blackface, just because something is done with no ill intent doesn't mean it should have no reprecussions or isn't hurtful.

Do you honestly think people would not bat an eye if he did something like this to Mahrez depicting a middle eastern character? You cant make fun of people based on racial stereotypes if someone will find it hurtful. You just cant. If he throws these types of jokes at Mendy in private and its their thing, or Mendy sends pictures of little Mexicans to him in private, knock yourselves out, its not big or classy but a bit of dark/offensive humor between those who enjoy it is harmless as long as it stays between those who enjoy it. Its a different can of worms to do it in front of millions when it is hurtful to people who take that shit for real day in day out.

Whats to stop some 12 year old from seeing that and sending it to a 12 year black kid in his class with the pictures swapped? When said black kids parents get upset and complain about the abuse their kid received and the sending kid gets in trouble where does the blame lie? You've got two kids hurt, one racially abused for nothing other than a joke and one in hot water for racially abusing someone (when he might not understand the implications of what he sent) because his hero did the same. Youve got two parents hurt their child was racially abused.

Footballers might not want to be, but they are role models and if they are going on social media, happy to enjoy the followers and fame that comes with it, they have a responsibility in how they behave, and guide those kids who follow them, they should be trying to put an end to this cancerous casual racism that plagues society, not to add fuel to the fire regardless of their intentions.

We will never move forward if we keep joking about these dumb stereotypes, why not let these things become the past? It's not even an issue of free speech, simply common sense.

Normalizing jokes about black people looking comical, which were once used to subject them into suffering, is completely racist.

Imagine if black players started making jokes of deceased people of Portuguese civil war, or of British soliders in WW2. That is the only way you can make these stupid europeans start thinking with some perspective. (The ones who don't think the Monkey chants are serious, or these tweets are problematic)

I wouldn't give a flying feck. But so nice of you to say that all of us Europeans are stupid fecks. It's not like there are tens of different nations, ethnicities around the continent.

Your acid test is fundamentally flawed. Are you saying that making monkey chants at a white person is fine, therefore it's not racist when done to a black player?

The issue is that racial stereotypes and tropes still exist and black people, amongst others, continue to be discriminated against and are subject to prejudice in modern society. Unfortunately, we don't live in this utopia you seem to exist in where we can all just 'move on' from the past.

Also, it's not just a cartoon of a black person. It is a caricature based racial stereotypes.
