Every single fecking manager would make that sub. All it takes is one long ball over the top and we would rely on the defensive prowess of a Lingard-Fred midfield to bail us out. Momentum would have changed anyway. We would inevitably sit back, every single team would, nevermind one with two 19 year olds in it.

It was a logical sub. Everyone is just pissed that we thrown the game away.
No not everyone was going to make this sub.

And he put on a defender, not a midfielder.

If he wanted to strengthen the midfield he could have put Garner and went on with 3 midfielders. Putting another defender on the expense of the attack made our midfield even more exposed due to lack of pressure up front.

It's a terrible tactical sub.

I do think too much focus is being made on the final sub.

Ole deserves much more criticism and it's more relevant for the first 71 minutes.

Dreadful

Obviously we'd all love to see him succeed here. Getting a point away to Sheffield Utd is a good result for any team.

But Ole is still yet to do anything of note, apart from developing hot prospects, to convince that he is the right man going forward. Giving him time when there's a world class manager out of work, is a big risk.

But he lives to fight another day so we just have to take it 1 game at a time.

Way too reactionary in here. Almost as if some of you have never watched a game of football before. We expended alot of energy grabbing the 3 goals back, there's no way we could have maintained the same tempo going down the stretch, Sheffield were always going to have a better last 5 minutes especially considering they're at home. The substitution was necessary, it's not as if Martial was having a great game and we don't have a plethora of options on the bench. If we'd maintained the same setup and conceded you'd have criticized Ole for not tightening things up and seeing out the 3 points.

He's also not entirely culplable for the first half. There's no doubt if Mctominay wasn't injured he'd have maintained the same line-up that's seen us recover so much form in the past few weeks. As it is he was forced into a switch and opted to put his trust in Jones who characteristically let him down. That's not horrible management, if he trusts Jones again and the same thing happens it will be.

The major error at the end wasn't the sub or going defensive, it was the same mistake we made against Liverpool. When we're trying to see a game out we play way too compact, there's little pressure on opposition wide players so when they receive the ball in advanced positions it's a free cross. Against Liverpool, AWB was criticized for not closing, but the cross leading up to the goal today was the same thing, except on BOTH sides this time, both their wide players were completely unchallenged. As soon as I saw Jagielka pass the ball forward, you knew the goal was coming because whoever it was on the ball had two wide options to distribute the ball.

That happening once and costing us could be a fluke but it happening twice over the course of a few games should tell Ole that needs tweaking. He deserves the time to learn from the mistakes.

After all the good work the players did clawing themselves back into the game, playing blistering attacking football in the process, Ole decides to bring on Tuanzebe and retreat into a back five again. This is after the players showed, quite clearly, that they were not comfortable in the system with their first half display.

You cannot defend him for that. I don't know what he was thinking to have even considered such a move.

He could bring Mata instead of striker and try to keep the ball. With this kind of sub you just invite pressure and allow them to create at least one chance
Yes, bringing in a broken Mata, when Sheffield inevitably decides to bypass the midfield with over the top balls to our box would make the world of difference.

Axel was the only viable option from the bench. Which indicates a different problem, but you can only play with cards you're dealt.

Defending a lead makes sense, if we conceded while continuing to attack he would've been slaughtered as well.

Has no one seen the game? Tuanzebe was playing as a CM. He didn't spend a second in the back 3.

And a much bigger waste of money than Shaw was. A player who has become injury prone, but at least has contributed
Contributed to what? The only season he’s been a regular was one of the worst seasons we’ve ever had.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Oh the Ole out brigade will be sick... That's no losses in 8 now....

I will not apologize when I say this...If you've called him clueless, a cnut, out of his depth... You are not a supporter, you are every bit of the problem and toxic.
You do realise a draw away against SU is still dreadful? You would have had a point if United had won.

People are too concerned with the game irrespective of a win or loss Ole should be shown the door at the end of the season. In 13 games we've W4 L4 D5 why are we talking about giving this man years at the helm ? The only thing that is keeping Ole his job is the sentimentality of the fans.

We expended so much energy with 3 quick attacks in 70 mins that we couldn't keep possession in that system?
You defend Ole, but then you go on to suggest he hasn't coached his players to press properly, which is also something that takes a lot of energy?

got the lead and went straight back to 3 at the back to invite pressure
We actually didn't go to three at the back. Tuanzebe went into the midfield. Either way, it was a negative substitution. As soon as it happened, we sat back and invited pressure, which ultimately led to the Sheff Utd equalising.

We should have continued to press and get that fourth goal which was looking very likely before Ole made the sub. Very frustrating!!!!

We're 9th in the league with 4 points out of 13 matches. We have an upcoming easy match in EL followed by an even easier one in PL against Villa at OT. I'm expecting to win both comfortably. After that 2 games in a row against Spurs and City. Let's see where we'll be after the next 3 games.

Cmon people remember why Ole got the job in the first place?? It is because he took us on a long unbeaten run, we were looking like the United of old and have had flashes where we looked like a cohes

How is bringing a defensive player on, 5 min until the end, with 4 forwards, a ACM in midfield and 2 teenagers on the field suddenly a mindbogling decision that no one understands and shows that the manager is out of his depth? What else was he supposed to do?

Bitching about the first 70 minutes is fine and understandable, but complaining about Tuanzebe's substitution is just dumb.

Additionally it wasn't a back 3, he played in midfield you weirdos.
He came on with 10 minutes left... And before Sheff Utd had even start to peg us back.

We were still looking threatening and causing them problems. That sub basically told them to not worry about us attacking them and that they could come onto us.

It also meant we had to rely on our shoddy defense for 10 mins.

It's the sort of sub you make in injury time to waste time and after you're being pinned back... You don't use it to invite pressure.

They were done, 3 goals in 7 minutes and couldn’t get out of their half we was under zero pressure. Add to that Axel was at the back as well not midfield and it was a daft move, we showed in the first half 3 at the back wasn’t working.

Come on, the players had shown how uncomfortable they were in his back-five system after they got slaughtered in the first half. Ole was well aware of this as he set us up in the familiar 4231 for the second, to which the players reacted by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, for Ole to revert back into the same system that caused all the problems in the first place is absolutely inexcusable.

He will be kicking himself tonight, and he should be. Hard. It was a dreadful error in judgment.

Yeah. Credit to him for the turnaround but feels like delaying the inevitable really.
Case can be made that what was in hands, he ballsed up badly:

Starting formation
Line-up

Clearly isn't working, but sticks with it. Subs had to be thrown on and the change was forced upon him. Youngsters bluster their way to three goals and a lead; Ole then, with things back in his control, reverts back to the system that got us in that mess in the first place.

It's been a horrendous day all-round for him.

The players are learning, the manager is learning. It's all part of the experience. The important things is that this game showed that that this team has it in it to come back even on one of the toughest grounds in the premier league. Would have been wonderful to get all 3 points but not today. We will learn from this.

Not is he not good enough for, he's a bad fit here. He's nothing more than a defensive coach. To start with 5 at the back, switch to attacking football and as soon as we lead Ole switches to 5 at the back again, you really make it up.

He is honestly clueless, sorry to say. We need to move on now

I’m more worried about the tactics than one sub call. We basically admitted before the game started that we couldn’t match them normally, by going with that formation.

It’s not hard to work out that a back 3 with that midfield won’t be able create. I know we’re really short, but you can’t just throw together a back five and expect it to be anything other than shit.

I think as a manager you have to read the game, though. We looked like we were going to get the fourth goal before the sub was made. Maybe he could have continued for a bit and tried to kill off the game.

The fact that people are having a go at him after going from 0-2 to 3-2 because he put on a defensive player in injury time...fecking hell. Really?
Maybe should have spent 130£m on the attack. He might have a job next summer.

He's really out of his depth. Formation/system aside, there are some players with a lot more quality than what they show on the pitch. He's so obviously not drilling the team or actually coaching our passages of play, buildup or style of attack.

I know he likes his fitness, what were the running stats today? We looked second best to Sheffield United for most the game, that's hardly setting the standards.

Fans who want him to stay don't actually care about United. See? It works the other way round as well.

We want to see a well-coached, properly-managed team out there every week and some of you would have us booted from the Caf if you could, just to further your own Top Red agendas. Madness!

To be fair it wasn’t a back 5 we kept the same formation but Lingard just got pushed further up
Still taking out a striker to get a defender in is just low level managment, cowardly and most of the times it hurts more than it helps you.

You want to put a 19 year old with less than 5 first team appearances, in none of which he was particularly solid defensively, in a team which already contains two 19 year olds, both of them fairly offensive minded, to defend the lead in an away game against an in form, fairly psyhical opposition?

Defenders can play in midfield. SAF once played 7 defenders in a team, it doesn't mean we played 7 at the back.
