It's evident we need a striker like him: someone who drives into the box and is absolutely desperate to get himself on the end of crosses and scrambles. We have only Greenwood in the squad who wants to be in the six yard box, and that's not particularly his desire (he's just quite intuitive and good at it) and at 18, with his body type, it's not exactly the best place for him to be honing his game.

Martial hasn't got the six yard box instincts, nor has Rashford and the amount of loose balls they stand idly by and watch is costing us points. Even if it isn't Haaland, we need a proper striker either in the team or as an option off the bench.

It's really annoying because we need midfielders just as much as we need a striker of the aforementioned ilk. I doubt we'll fork out for both in January unless we go the bargain bucket option.

Let’s keep Ole so we can get Haaland!!!

So instead of Greenwood coming on Haaland can come on and look clueless instead.

Pogba, Ibra, Sanchez, Lukaku for a few in recent years. Haaland isn't that. Haaland is a young player with big potential like Martial was, which we've had no problems signing.
Fair enough on Pogba, although he was 'coming home'. Ibra was looking for a payday and didn't choose us over anyone else. Sanchez came for the money and City pulled out anyway. Lukaku is not such a big player except physically.

Yeah, I've been arguing this with someone in the Martial thread and while they have a point that a fully functioning well managed team could get a lot out of a talented forward like Martial, a mediocre team like ours that struggles to break down defences and has a right winger like James getting in crosses is probably better served by a hungry 6 yard box striker.

James put in 2,3 good crosses in the 6 yard box yesterday that you would hope a more natural and instinctive forward such as Halaand would gobble up.

I was thinking the same thing. It’s not just this match either, a lot of times I’ve been thinking we don’t have a natural goalscorer in our best XI now. So many times the ball will go through the box, without anyone going for it.

He would start for us.

He already has more goals in European competition that Martial or Rashers.

Games like yesterday are crying out for a CF like him. Martial and Rashford simply don't have the instincts a number 9 is supposed to have. Clueless people in this thread ridiculing him for being a tap-in merchant as if that is something negative.

Pretty much. If we had RVN in this team he'd probably score 25 a season.

Some of those balls across the face of goal were crying out for a tap in, and Rashford/Martial were 10 yards away.

In some ways I don't blame Martial as he dropped deep to build the play, but Rashford HAS to be flying into the box ready for it. He just ball watches way too much.

It's exactly what we need, someone with a strikers instinct, who will be in that 6 yard box, because the balls are flying in there from James, and there's no one there to put the ball in. Infuriating to watch every week.

Yesterdays match was a crown example of how bad we need a natural goalscorer in this squad. We lack aggression, good runs and determination in the last third, and especially in the box.
Please sign Haaland up, Woody.

If you were him, would you sign for us at the moment?
Most definately! He can come, say on a 4/5 year contract and if things aren't looking good for Utd he will then have the option to go to a Real/Barca/City/Liverpool/Bayern/Juve type team and he will still be pretty young and will have had some very good experience in the Premier League. Utd will have a player that they can probably sell for even more than they pay for him. On the other hand, he could be the player that propels Utd to a new era of dominance and stays at OT and becomes a legend and has a statue built outside the ground.

Win Win situation all around if you ask me.

He's exactly what we needed yesterday. All the crosses in the box an noone even makes a run for them.

It seems this lad is available in January, if we pay well. Surely, it makes sense to buy him given how hit and miss Martial is. We need a better forward because we are not scoring anything like enough goals compared to the amount of chances we have created recently.
A january window of Haaland and Decor from Watford would instantly transform out team for the better - no doubts about it. Both players available and wouldn't put a massive hit on our wages (compared to the likes of Sancho). Both would also be players for the foreseeable future and not just quick fixes.

why would he want to sign for utd, surely he should be looking at a top European club who win trophies?

Here is why I think he would sign for us (again):
1. He is 19 and has stated more than once that at this point of his career he’s putting more emphasis on development and first team football than trophies and money. He has already shown this by choosing RBS over Juve even though Juve offered 2 x salaries.
2. Man United can offer first team football for him in the PL, the toughest league in the world, and we are believe it or not still a giant club. He would at least get a rotation role here from day 1.
3. He has massive respect for OGS, and has had him as manager for 2 years at Molde.
4. We would show ambition by spending 60-85M on him.
5. He would not sign for any club where he would be backup for a top striker, getting 10 minutes here and there.

You make some good points but I'm unsure as to how furniture from other clubs would improve us on the pitch, to be honest.

Let’s spunk that Pogba money, shall we? If we’re doing muppetry, let’s do it right.

If Havertz was coming, I’d definitely change my mind.
Think I speak on the behalf of the entire caf that we're glad that you aren't.
Remember some clever lad quoting me with a similar lack of wit when I put the dampers on the Sancho thread.

All I’m saying is if I’m one of Europe’s top talents with no ties to the club I’d expect my representatives to secure me a better move.

We all support United, stop being so precious - we aren’t the most attractive prospect in football by a long shot.

Not all good players have every top club in europe ready with a proper bid.

Real are stocked, barca a bad fit, Liverpool not interested, city seemingly neither.

Your competition would seem to be Chelsea (in summer), Dortmund, Leipzieg, maybe Atletico (doubtful) and Bayern. And they'd still have to back up their interest with a bid that says they want him above any other targets.

There is a lot of very good players who sign for clubs with a free run despite being high on the radar at other top clubs.

Who were the competition when Liverpool signed Alonso, Torres and Suarez? Everyone knew about them, only one club willing to bid what was needed at that point in time.

The release clause is not true. And plus, wasn't 1 of the last times when Raiola was in their office throwing chairs? :D
I think it was only a Leipzig-specific release clause that was denied, not a release clause in general.

As for Raiola, there were those reports of him throwing around a chair, but in the aftermath of the Mkhitaryan transfer the story wasn't so much about the greedy agent talking his player into a silly transfer for profit (something which would've been easy to sell), but rather about Mkhitaryan supposedly going back on his word. And in 2017 one of his youngsters (Pherai) signed for Dortmund's academy, so there can't be that much bad blood between both sides.

"What will happen to Martial if we sign this kid" :houllier:
"We shouldn't sign him because we have Martial, we should be signing AM/CM first before wasting money on luxury."

Fast forward, Martial is injured and we have to reshuffle our team. :(

Such baffling logic. It's like they weren't paying attention when one forward was out for two months and we couldn't even buy a goal in that period.

Hopefully sky got this one wrong, will be awful to watch without Martial leading the line.

We should do everything to sign Haaland this Jan, with it without Martial injuries. Need competition for places and also they can play together, need players who are obsessed with goals.
