How are we the only* club in for a player like that?

Incredible.

*Only club with a sustained interest in him, not a fleeting connection in the press to sell some papers/get a few clicks

EDIT: These tweets probably offer a good explanation as to why. Here’s hoping the rest of Europe were wrong not to pull the trigger and we end up with a jewel:

To be honest he just looks like what we need doesn't he? Hopefully we keep Pogba and with Fred and Mctominay we'll have a very good midfield. Functional.

love waking up (its 8am here) to a transfer thread moving along 20 pages and clicking through to see the drama unfold

always the chance it just turns out to be an e-fight, mind you, which adds to the suspense a little

No we are not. Try reading up on it.
You kind of are. You're basically saving between €5-10m from their initial demands(€70m between base fee and realistic add-ons)

Goals from distance and through passes. What have United been lacking this season? Yes, exactly that!

Anyone in a nervous dispersion don't look on twitter, plenty of pundits and people thinking he will sign for Barca over Utd , some even suggesting he has already agreed his contract with them :wenger:
You’re very irritating.

Looks like he could be a new Nani, exciting, infuriating, he won’t help us control games at all but he’ll help us win games if that makes sense.
Huge pressure on the board and scouting team, we are going to look like absolute morons if he turns out to be a dud

This. It’s not negative.

If we signed him for twice the price on Jan 1st the same people would be mocking the board for spending to much and United being awful at transfers.

We haggle, yes that takes time, agree what seems a good deal, and that’s seen as being inept.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, usual black and white opinions here though pushing the negative.
What ARE you talking about. We were never going to sign him for twice the price. So why would anyone criticise that. The gap between the two was no more than £10m. Tiny in today's terms.

We could do this all night with the "if you x then y?", so I'm just going to leave it there, but you really don't see the merits of getting a player in early during the transfer window than late? Especially during a period where games come thick and fast, the squad's depleted and the club is in crisis on the pitch?

I'm not saying we should've given them a flat €100m on Jan 1st, because that would be ridiculous, but after haggling for a month we've basically given them the same amount of money they've always asked for but made the bonuses easier to achieve than the ones we started out with. So what exactly did all the haggling do? It's not like they were asking for €100m in the beginning and our negotiators got it down to €40m. We're still paying them €80m with all bonuses included, so I ask again, could we have paid that same amount (that they were insisting on all along) earlier and had the benefit of having him in the squad earlier?
We could do it all night. Your argument that paying the extra 10/15mil could be the difference as to whether we get CL or not is the starting point though. Ultimately. We've make a healthy saving by negotiating.

I see the merits. Do you see the merits in not paying 20% more on a deal just to get a player in a week or two early?

Really excited. We both really need him and he looks a class act. I hope we get him and Pogba in the same side in a few weeks.

Only negatives are that we should have done this weeks ago, as we have had negative results in January that he could have impacted on and the club have really soured the goodwill this could have generated.

For all those complaining that it’s taken until now to seal the transfer - just enjoy the fact we got him. Transfers don’t just happen overnight, and no one is going to rush through a transfer just for the sake of a few games.

we got him. Just enjoy it and let’s hope he delivers
Let me take you back to Dec 29th, three days before the transfer window opened

The fact that our club is so dysfunctional has made people forget what a normally functioning club looks like.

Well said. It doesn't cure all our ills but clinging to the fee/ structure/ delays just takes the attention away from an exciting, and overdue, signing. Enjoy it.

I do. But that's not what we've done.

I don't see the merits in spending a month haggling an asking price of €80m down to €80m, which is what we've done. The figure's always been €80m and that's what the agreed fee is, if you believe the reports. So in that context, I don't see the point in not buying him two weeks earlier which means he can contribute to the team during a hectic period when our squad is threadbare.

Do you have any reliable sources claiming a €100m asking price or are you just going to peddle the 20% thing over and over again?

I remember his goal scoring record not looking that popping if you exclude the penalties this season. Was it the same last season as well?
