Well said Ole, should have gone further and suggested these refs are beguiled by these city cnuts, they foul all over the pitch constantly and rarely get punished.

Gutted to miss out on Wembley but proud of the lads for holding their own. We actually beat Citeh. At the Etihad. Again this season. Well fought lads. Let's see what the other cup competitions bring us. I wish we'd get an explanation about that late free kick though. Only one player on the pitch had ever scored a free kick for us. And he's scored a few. Someone needs to tell us why he was shunted aside there.

I think I was a bit harsh on my ratings for the defenders as they did well but all made some pretty bad errors at various points of the game but were rock solid for the most part. DDG kept us in it in the first twenty mins but our midfield slowly grew into the game. Shame we had zero attacking quality.

I genuinely forgot Martial was on the pitch until the 42nd minute. Greenwood wasn't really in it. Lingard was just appalling again.

Fred taking over Mata on free kick duties was :houllier:

Not even close to good enough. Manchester City wasn't even considered a rival in the 2000's and we used to blow them away with ease. Now we are smaller than them. Don't care about the performance, only about the end result which is, we're out of the competition.

OK performance and always good to beat City. Bruno must be No1 and lingard and Pereira should never start again. Need a striker badly.

Pep and the City players are so incredibly bitter post-match:

Pep:
We played a side with incredible physicality. The goal was from a set piece. The first time they shot on target.

In both games we were better. I am so satisfied with the players, and the way they play with the problems in the back four.
KdB:

I can't really comprehend how we lost this game. For me Manchester United didn't have one chance today. In the end, good we go through.

I think we got sloppy. The goal we did not clear the lines well and out of nothing they scored. You can tell me if they had a chance again. We fought when we had to and will learn from the mistakes.

"If we win the final no-one will talk about this game. The final is a nice day and we will fight to win the cup. If we do it will be nice.

They are, and always be a small-time club.

Fair play to the lads they put a shift in tonight, but we seriously lack any quality in the final third.

Martial did nothing all game, I wouldn’t mind if he showed some fight, heart and at least chased defenders down, but he does nothing to contribute in a ‘dog fight’ . Example being Daniel James, he comes on, lacks the quality needed at the moment, but he didn’t stop running all second half.

I'm just going on The Caf
I was saying that Matas come on for any late free kicks and then stone me Fred takes it.
I thought we did ok up to their penalty area, chronic lack of quality up top, hopefully Bruno is the answer.
Matic played well up to the red card which was harsh in my opinion, hes done well the last few weeks, super goal too.

Outplayed to begin with but apart from a couple of individual brain farts, we kept them at arms length.A Man United team boasting the likes of Fernandes,McT,Pogba and Rashford will be a match for most teams, those 4 would have made a huge difference tonight.
Lingard can sod off, shambolic performance from him.

Sending off WAS bollocks, engineered by City though. As soon as Matic got his first (unjust) yellow, City went after him - was always going to happen.

Fred has been very good. Works hard, wins the ball back, moves the ball on well, receives the ball in tight spaces. Matic is back up to the back up.
Working hard is the minimum you expect from anyone in any profession.
In a midfield 2 you need to be top draw in either protecting the

back 4 like a Keane, Redondo, Gattuso, Kante, De Rossi or Makelele

Or a great passer from deep like a Carrick, Alonso, Scholes, Pirlo or Xavi.

Maybe just maybe you could get away with carrying someone like Fred in a midfield 3 but you must have 2 players with the quality of Pirlo and a bang on it Pogba

Definitely positives. Always gonna be tough with the gulf in quality but we managed the game well and if we had a bit more quality in the final third could easily have nicked it.

Lingard hopefully won’t be starting too often with Bruno coming in and Martial really needs to start pulling his finger out too.

Emm.... about that. They are funded by oil. If they had no oil money, pep would not be with them.

Beat Pep twice this season though, only manager to take points of Liverpool.

This side is depleted, if we had Pogba, Rashford, McSauce and Bruno the game plan and scoreline would have been very different. He can only work with the tools he has and he has done very well.
Dont buy the depleted statement, we should have replaced Ander and Fellaini. we knew both were off by March a year ago. He did not get Bruno because he saw it as not a priority area, that is incompetence.i agree he can only work with the tools he has, but firstly the tools he has he chose to be left with, he forgot about his young tools and finally, he forgot to oil them, or in simple words, coach them. At the start of the season, first 4 or 5 games we had everyone fit. I see no progression in the style of play. Players passing backwards in 93.35 min of the game is shocking. He needs to coach them to be urgent, ping the ball forward and have players to run to it. From the 88th minute, we had 6 minutes left. We should be going for broke. Instead we had zero shots and a wasted free kick. That is partly down to coaching. You can have the best tools but you need to oil them and use them properly. Ole is clueless.

Weird in this matchup how you tend to do much better in containing Man. City at Etihad than Old Trafford.

And yet it is repeatedly missing.

No you don't. Hes very good at closing players down and winning the ball back. He's become very press resistant. Having a player that can play through a midfield is vitally important.

The player next to Fred is the defensively minded player. The 4 players ahead of Fred are the ones go create and score. 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 both have room for a player like Fred.

How many Scholes, Xavis, Keane's are in Liverpools midfield? With the exception of De Bruyne, how many in City's?

I dont think it was Ole's choice to sell 2 midfielders and not replace them, I am sure he wanted more options like every manager, but no one knows what goes on behind closed doors, so I cant critisise Ole for that. What we do know is Jose was crying out for a centre back, everyone knew we needed a centre back, and he wasnt backed. Just because Ole doesnt scream and shout like Jose in public, dont take that as he is happy with the squad.

When you have better ball players in the team, you can start to pass the ball out from the back and not around the back. If we had Rashfors, McTom, Pogba and Brun tonight it would be a totally different game. Frustrating night, but give him time, he has came up against the 2 best mangers in the world and has took points of both with a worse squad. We need to back him, so does the board.

Yeah, wrong on both counts there my man. Derbies were never fun, regardless of when during the past 2 decades.

Smaller than them. What? Get a grip.

It does sound bitter but objectively what they're saying isn't factually untrue.
It's very untrue. KDB said exactly the same thing during the WC when he lost to France, along with Hazard etc... for me, this is just the sign of a player who doesn't have the winning mentality. Just a sore loser. At United, we should make an habit of spanking these kind of players. Hopefully, Ole starts doing that going with our players.

That doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. We can all agree that CRonaldo has a crazy winning mentality but he's also an incredbly sore loser. Look at his comments after Portugal drew Iceland in the Euro 2016 group stage.

Sadly not a good result but still a good win and that makes it 2/2 at the Etihad this season which is very good. Can't complain too much. Thought Matic got a soft sending off and thought the ref lacked balls at not sending off Rodri who got a clear yellow for fouling Lingard but then proceeded to kick the ball in the stands which to me is clear dissent and time wasting and should be carded much more harshly in football in general.

Yeah, well I didn't want to use another word on a forum, but for me, KdB is miles behind C Ronaldo when it comes to getting the winning mentality. He's just a baby really. That comment he had after losing to France was ridiculous at best, and here, it's the same thing. You couldn't finish off your chances, and you conceded a goal, that's how it works. Nobody says United was to win when they go and waste chances in all those games we couldn't score despite having the chances, and then conceding the goals to either share or lose points. Same story, end of story.
