Coronavirus in US so far this year - confirmed cases: 987 deaths: 29

Source - CDC

I would like to know why there is such a moral panic developing with regards to this coronavirus. The lowest number of deaths from "the flu" in the US was around 12,000. This is in 1 country. The current WORLDWIDE death toll from this "special flu" is around 4,600. Why am I supposed to be scared? I need a reason to be scared because simply told "you should be scared" isn't enough. Why are sporting competitions being cancelled? I don't watch the news. The only way I even heard about this coronavirus was on this forum a couple weeks ago. Now I'm reading that football might all be cancelled because there's an outbreak of the flu. It's ridiculous. Don't reply with "shut up, just be scared like everyone else". Try and explain to me WHY I should be scared!
I would kindly ask you to please take some time to read this thread then if you don't watch the news. Can't go repeating every time someone who is ignorant (in the sense that you don't know, not maliciously so) says why is everything shutting down and such.
Granted there is a difference between panic and being cautious and prepared. Something Italy are suffering for now because they didn't do the latter. UK may follow suit because of Boris Johnson not willing to make the hard decisions to get ahead of the curve.

the mortality rate is about 30 times that of seasonal flu

and it looks like most of us will get it
3.4% mortality rate

If that was the mortality rate in 17-18 then instead of around 60,000 deaths in the US there would have been around 150,000 deaths in the US.

You might be better off going away and doing an aul Google as you don't seem to listening to anyone on here.

EDIT: Coronas affect on Italy would be a good place to start.

Because the speed with which this virus spreads means hospitals are going to be completely overwhelmed very quickly. Right now estimates are as high as 70% of the world becoming infected. The US is predicting up to 140 million infected. There's an article on the guardian today that says 1.6million peoole are soon gonna get hit by the virus in NSW. 80000 hospitalised simultaneously, which could lead to 8k deaths because there is nowhere in the world with the medical facilities to treat so many patients.

Right now the intention is to delay the spreading as much as possible. Portion out the infections to alleviate strain on the healthcare system as much as possible and save untold numbers of lives by doing so.

Cancelling major events is absolutely the right thing to do.
Thank you for repeat this.
Hopefully countries/people take this seriously, it will save so many lives that could be needlessly lost because we want our entertainment.

I’m the ignorant one? There is literally a few thousand people that have contracted the virus in world with billions of people. Too many people like yourself just read the news and get in a panic. You cannot stop a virus spreading. All tourist sites are closed yet all bars and restaurants are still open, so what happens? All the tourist congregate in the same place anyway. The logic is plain stupid.
Do the maths (not the math) and you will see how quickly this could spread and so slowing it down until the summer makes sense if the NHS is to handle the people who get it worse.

I'll do the maths for you.......
Mon 09 Mar - 278 cases in UK
Tue 10 Mar - 373
Wed 11 Mar - 456

Average increase over last three days of about 1.28 per day.

So projected infections at same rate would be something like:
Thu 12 Mar 585
Fri 13 Mar 750
Sat 14 mar 961
Sun 15 Mar 1,232
Mon 16 Mar 1,580
Tue 17 Mar 2,026
Wed 18 Mar 2,597
Thu 19 Mar 3,330
....
Thu 26 Mar 18,963
......
Thu 2 Apr 107,999
....
Thu 9th April 615,077
Fri 10th Apr 788,605
Sat 11th Apr 1,011,088

By Saturday 11th April four weeks this Saturday would be over one million at todays rate.

The only way to slow it down is reduce human contact - it is NOT STUPID it is COMMON SENSE!!

Worst case scenario football wise will be Liverpool winning the title and then no football for a few years. The image of Henderson lifting the title will be the last footballing image for a few years. Everton don't feck this up.
Liverpool won't get to lift the trophy until the last home game no matter when they win it.

So if this season gets cancelled they won't be able to lift it even if they win it on time.

Because although the deaths are currently smaller overall it actually kills at maybe 10x the rate on a case by case basis, maybe more. It is also very infectious and the number of infected is increasing at a geometric rate. Globally this is currently around 18% a day and a doubling every 5-6 days. If nothing is done to slow it down then what is 1000 today could easily turn into more than 100,000 next month and more than 1,000,000 just 40 days from now. That's the thing with geometric progressions, small things become giant fast. At some stage the sheer number of infected in need of medical attention overburdens the health service. Once that happens the death rate climbs even higher. That is what is currently happening in north Italy, there are too many sick for the hospitals to handle and as a result currently 7% of people die.

As of right now there is no vaccine and virtually no immunity - unlike with the flu. By closing things down and enforcing work from home policies and the like it is hoped to slow down the spread so that fewer people are ill at any one time. This allows healthcare systems to cope and buys us time to find a vaccine.

Listen man, if by your own math 90,000 more people would have died and you still are not "scared" about this, then good for you. Luckily most sane people think that just staying at home and saving lives is a good trade-off.

Numbers are why public health officials and doctors are scared.
Roughly 10% of the population develops influenza in any one year, and that’s accounting for seasonal shifts and vaccination. Now Covid 19 is more contagious than the flu so let’s put it conservatively that 15-20% of the population will develop it sometime over the next 3-4 months in the UK.

Unlike the flu, roughly 10-15% of those who get Covid will develop severe pneumonia/pneumonitis which requires hospital admission and possibly ventilator support. That is much worse than the flu.

Now, factor in the fact that most governments maintain roughly 4 hospital beds per 1000 head of population. So that means there’s only enough hospital beds for 0.4% of the population at any one time. So what’s happening in Italy at the moment is that there are far more sick people than there are hospital beds. And those sick people who need ventilation and don’t have a bed? They die. And pretty quickly too. And it doesn’t matter if they’re young or old. If you go into respiratory failure and you don’t get support immediately, you’re cactus.

So you see, contrary to what some people are calling this nothing more than “flu”, this is nothing like it.
And pity the poor soul at the moment that develops cancer in Italy. There’s no beds to treat you because every one is taken with a sick Covid patient currently.

The NHS is in for a hell of a ride.

Have i read right that Boris is still refusing to shut the country down? Ireland gone over his head and done it anyway
Classic comment this. “How dare the colonies go over Boris’ head?”

Always amazes me how many British people think Ireland is in the UK.

The issue should be suspend vs postpone? Hopefully, its just a postpone. Like many small business, small clubs need tickets money and day to day income...

So our czech league is suspended for at least 30 days. Will be ridiculous if PL is the only competition played this weekend.

Postpone is just easing the blow for eventually suspension.
Nothing that has been current postponed went on to happen, but almost all went on to being suspended.

From your own graph there were 61k deaths out of an estimated caseload of 45 million. That's a mortality rate of 0.13%. That's literally 25x less than your 3.4% figure. 61k x 25 = 1.525 million.

So you think that all the other places in the table are decided after this weekends games except they won't give Liverpool the title? It's either whole season is cancelled or a break for some time.
I didn't mean that liverpool wouldnt win, but are you telling me you wouldnt try to wind liverpool fans up with it? I still would.
We will get CL anyway because people are saying if Europa is cancelled we will get it so that means CL
I know 5th will be enough because of man city being disqualified, but why would they chose United to be the default winners? Is it based on a seeding or something? Not moaning or saying wrong, just interested.

I understand that more people are going to die from this flu, but why is the football season being cancelled? Why not just give health warning recommending that the vulnerable, sick and elderly stay home and play the games behind closed doors? All the people that go to football matches aren't going to stay at home because there is no football to go to. Densely populated areas will be still be full of thousands of people each day like every other day so if this flu is going to spread it's going to spread regardless. Cancelling the football season is not going to stop the flu from spreading.

Apparently we are the highest ranked team (of the last 5 European seasons) left in the Europa. Something to do with the link below but it’s probably bollocks.

Season not finishing will certainly deny us a CL place next season too, so I hope it doesn’t come to that. Of course, Scouse not winning the League would be the mother of silver linings.

Has it even been announced officially that PL games at the weekend will be behind closed doors or have we not even done that yet? Why are we reacting so pathetically slow, it's just mad to witness.

Because of the perfectly sound rationale that a risk can be minimised even though it can't be eliminated. A reduction in large congregations of people makes a massive difference because each new congregation adds, heck even multiplies the instances of interaction. Disease prevention has to start somewhere

His pissed off because he went on a break to Poland and the Polish, to their credit, decided to be proactive. He's bit of a tool to be honest, the way he's getting on. Some things are more important than getting your monies worth whilst on holiday.

Do you reckon it's because our government is holding back from drastic action? So PL don't feel obliged unlike other leagues.

@ManchesterYoda its very simple. If we continue to allow huge gatherings of people, then it’s a statistical fact that more people will contract the virus and henceforth, more people will die.

yes this virus is more damaging to the older population, but it’s literally shortening the lives of loving parents/grandparents/great grandparents around the world and robbing them of more time with their loved ones. It’s devastating.

You clearly haven’t been able to get outside the “the flu is worse” headspace, but it’s very simple. This is new, and if things to the way they currently are, it could end up being far worse than the flu. If there was ever something to overreact about, it’s a new deadly virus that’s fast spreading around the globe. So with all do respect, change your opinion because your current one is outdated, ignorant and doesn’t factor into reality whatsoever.
