Merson: "Man United need 700 million!"

That is bs, if the club was actually shrewd in market like actually doing some good scouting to buy a good player before they board the hype train, signing players with low release clauses and almost out of contract in either the summer or January when they will be available for free, even in this janauary window there are two or players that would at the very least gives us quality in squad depth to easily match the likes of liverpool or spurs.

You dont need 700 million to build a great side if you have great scouting system and manager. But he is right in that with people like Ed and Ole at the helm, you just have to sign as many great players as possible to succeed despite them, not because of them.

On a seperate note. Didn't feel this guy deserves his own thread so putting this here. Man he grates my skin, always spouting nonsense.

Recent article:
"All the talk about Jadon Sancho commanding a £100m-plus transfer fee has been blown out of the water if you ask me.
"Borussia Dortmund are said to be demanding in excess of that figure for one of Europe's hottest young talents, but they can forget it.
"There's no way that's going to be happening. It's gone – over and out. Top clubs can't be putting staff on furlough and then start forking out that kind of money the minute the transfer window opens.
"It's not just the fee, but with players in that price bracket comes a pay packet of around £300,000 a week and that's just not going to be happening.
"The landscape has changed not just for everyone on the planet but for football as well. Really big-money moves may be off the table for quite some time.
"With the financial situation as it is, how would it look for clubs struggling to pay their staff and then transfer deadline day arrives and it flashes up on the screen that £900m or whatever has been splashed out on players? There would be uproar."

Highlighted the garbage. First off its the likes of Liverpool and co that are furloughing their staff. And aint no way Sancho will be getting that wages if he comes. Lastly, its gone from 700mill to 900mill now folks.

Utter bellend.:wenger:

I think he means the combined spending from all the teams during the window.

Paul Merson.
Literally nothing he says is worth reading or listening to.

I find this idea that because of covid19 it will suddenly be unethical for football clubs to be spending hundreds of millions on football players pretty repulsive. What kind of egalitarian utopia did guys like Merton think they were living in before the virus? In the UK in 2019 there were more than 280,000 people living on the streets (by the official estimate - it is widely acknowledged that the real number is likely to be as much as two or three times that.) In 2017/18 12.5m people were living below the poverty line in the UK - 19% of the population. But now huge transfer fees are unacceptable?

The minute people start listening to guys like Merson, the world really is in trouble.

It's a bullshit opinion but if and when we do spend that sort of money, we are going to get an incredible backlash.

As with most things in life it needs an extreme case for things to change or be in the limelight i.e Weinstein case in the #metoo movement, Saville case in Yewtree operation, this in terms of wage stuff etc etc.

Apart from this.

Its funny, but also a ridiculous notion to equate "success" purely with "trophies". Sheffield United and Leicester probably wont win any trophies this season - it is silly to suggest that the seasons have not been a success for them, however.

Feel like we are very close. If we can keep pogba. We'll only need 2 or 3 more players to compete for the title.

Even without Pogba, adding in a right winger and center forward plus consistent health would put United right into the mix.

In relative terms you are correct but Spurs are a member of the 'big 6' and have the fewest trophies accumulated. Spurs want to be treated like the big club they claim to be, they should have their success measured like all the other members of that group. A top 4 finish shouldn't be viewed as a success for any team it should be viewed as a platform to help elevate teams to attain success. Sheffield United and Leicester are outliers and this should be seen as a relative success for them but Spurs have been here for 5/6 years consistently and have nothing to show for it and they should be measured on that notion.

Exactly. There plenty of positions that are nearly solid now. Even the midfield with fred and mctominay. Add 1 or 2 more, surely united can definitely push further. Ole did a great job so far with how limited the squad is.

I completely agree with you. I’d also add the accolades Pochettino routinely receives for this ‘success’.

If you look at the peak of that Spurs squad it had several World Class players in their prime. I think they underachieved personally.

The season Leicester won the league and the season United were second were actually a bit embarrassing for this ‘amazing’ manager.

Completely agree . Merson is one of the clowns like Jamie R who has zero opinions of his own so he hears others talking about certain things then he comes out and spouts crap without any knowledge on subjects and talks as if it is true .

Completely agree, yet there was a longing for Poch from so many. All I remember from his Tottenham tenure was a succession of bottled opportunities.

Most managers would have done relatively well with that squad. And relatively well is what Poch achieved.

"The clubs cannot ask the government to pay the wages of their staff and then once this has passed, and hopefully it will, go and spend £60m, £70m and even £80m on players. That's taking the mick at the highest level!

quoted from Ed's paper the sun today on why Alexis will be given a second chance, didnt know we asked Boris and Co to pay our staff.

Hes right, Dortmund will be taking us for idiots if we pay pre corona prices

Has anyone seen the video of him saying players would take winning the Premier League over the Champions League any day?

Hes right, Dortmund will be taking us for idiots if we pay pre corona prices
Tbf, we don't know what the market is like now. Are we going to take any less for Pogba because of Corona? I doubt it.

Hes right, Dortmund will be taking us for idiots if we pay pre corona prices
That's why it's such incredibly bad timing to be negotiating right now before the Corona market kicks in and forces a deflation on prices. Try in a month or 3 when they are struggling and the desperation really kicks in

Why do people care about someone who clearly hates Utd. Every time we are linked with a player he says "why would they join Utd "

When we were linked with Aubameyang his pearls of wisdom was "Why would he join Utd it would only be for money "

I was waiting for someone to say well why did he join Arsenal then ?
