@Carolina Red, @Raoul, @Revan, @Organic Potatoes, @Florida Man Just to get some context, who do Americans rank as their 'worst ever' president? I'm just looking at what's going on across the US and thinking you couldn't have picked anybody worse during one of the US' most darkest times in recent history.

Or is this just a 'been there before' kind of situation? I just can't imagine what kind of America would be left if there was another 4 years with this guy in charge.
Damn, hard to say. Trump is making his case to be the absolute worst in modern times, but for now I'm giving it a tossup between Reagan and Dubya. My knowledge of presidents pre 20th century is lacking. Thanks, school!

It's unforgiveable that he isn't addressing the nation and appealing for calm.
But not surprising at all. He is the one single person who can mend these gaps or at least address them in a sane, rational, and proactive way (but none of those words resonate or run through his body!). But we all know, he's been widening and deepening the gaps incrementally for the past 3.7 years. He's done so much damage to the country.

You haven’t even heard of Andrew Johnson?
I've certainly heard of him along with others in that century. I just couldn't give you a well rounded post on why he's bad and all that. And whatever I did learn about him, it already leaked out of my head years ago.

Great speech! Amazingly Presidential of you, that will most definitely put your citizens minds at ease that you will do everything you can to listen to their concerns and help unite and bring the country together so it can heal. You will also ensure innocent protestors will not be treated like the looters and those rioting and any brutally by the Police or National Guard will be swiftly punished.

Basically gave the White South all of their political and economic rights back intact, for free.

Now you know what to answer next time that question pops up.

If he wants to outlaw everyone that dislikes him, he'll have to give up golf to find the time for signing bills.

No idea about the credibility of this website but seen the pneumonia story in several places. Seems to range from 30% - 60% difference claimed. Could take current figure to 140k - 170k (if true).

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/05/29/death-m29.html
It’s more of a conversation for the Covid thread, but yes some states are reporting pneumonia deaths at 2-5x their 5 year rolling average. The overall numbers are still weighted towards N.Y./NJ though and there is great uncertainty in the data so I’d be wary of espousing a 60% variance. Currently the CDC shows excess deaths at between 22-45k.

These states with the suspicious pneumonia death numbers are mostly red states trying to open up at the behest of Donald from what I’ve seen (to tie it back to the topic), but digging through the data is a headache and I haven’t done any rigorous analysis of it.

It's simple, he believes racial tensions will force white independents to vote for him even if they don't like him amd drive the deplorables to the ballot box. There's nothing clever about it. That's just the way his mind works.
I sometimes forget how much I hate him when he makes his comedic appearances. He is a vile human being. A scumbag.

It never ceases to amaze me how self-proclaimed intellectuals and political commentators can be so ignorant of history. Can people criticise Trump without spouting such drivel

Trying to make it about any one president is part of the problem. Exactly why CNN are happy to run with that narrative.

I know there's no logical answer, but why would the world laugh at Joe Biden over this situation?

Yep, very true. Trump is unique in many ways but unfortunately there’s an awful lot of continuity between his presidency and those that preceded him. It’s just the nature of the beast.
However, I do not want to downplay his threat domestically. Biden may well be a steaming shit too but he’s a slightly smaller, less foul-smelling turd. It’s imperative Trump is removed from office.

If only they impeached him when they had the opportunity. Might not have changed anything, but they'd have a more competent leader.

Because Joe Biden is a Democrat. Trump is politicizing the situation of civil destruction and unrest on Democratic officials saying that if you weren't a Democrat, you'd call in the National Guard and not have anarchy. Which is obviously fecking stupid and reckless to say, so fits in with Trump perfectly.

Nobody gives a shit what your political affiliation is, we just don't want to have people, especially black people, killed and murdered for nothing. There's nothing to laugh about or boast about, he's such a knobhead.

I'm just amazed that when you look at Trump's presidency and all the batshit crazy stuff he's doing including the above that you guys are still throwing out other names as the worst president.

What would it take to put it beyond any doubt?
You have to remember that American history is riddled with civil war, slavery and genocide. Some Presidents have overseen some pretty horrendous atrocities that have left marks that are still felt today, over 150 years later.

It all comes down to how you define "worst". Is it the one with the darkest legacy? In that case Trump has some serious competition, to the point where you could argue he's not even in the bottom three. Is it just the most incompetent President? Trump wins that easily. In fact, his incompetence is probably a good thing, all things considered. If he was equally evil, less lazy and more intelligent he'd know how to do a lot more direct damage. At the moment his inability to act is arguably doing more damage than his actions. Imagine if he had the political smarts of Putin instead of just golfing, eating fast food, watching TV and tweeting every day...

If you do a poll nationwide Trump would probably be voted the worst President but also be voted the best President. The country is so divided it is unbelievable.

It's a tricky situation and one where, typically, the U.S. has taken advantage of situations for their gain regardless of their political/social ideological beliefs. In fact, I'd go as far to say the U.S. government doesn't much care unless if there's a geopolitical threat to the country and it's strategic interests so political/social ideological beliefs be damned, if there's the potential for geopolitical gain or threat, then it immediately becomes important to the U.S.

German scientists, who were loyal to the Nazi party by choice or force, were hired to help the U.S. gain advantages against Russia and other countries. They saw tangible use for them, so fine.

Nixon's words, not U.S. general public's beliefs. Not sure how the U.S. gained anything from one man's words, not actions.

The actions of Pinochet, Contra, etc. yes, those were for geopolitical gain and the U.S. government took the side of whatever person or group who they thought could not only win but sustain power and influence with their support.

And that is why you can't proclaim that US had ever been antifa
