Ronaldo was absolutely infuriating. Mason couldn’t be more different. He’s got the Midas touch. Ronaldo got that at 22.
Ronnie was more about entertaining with his umpteen stepovers and showboating at 18. He was very exciting and infuriating. When he added better decision making to the talent he took off..

It's rare to have the maturity that Mason has at 18 but when he matures further and adds extra dimensions to his game, then we can speak about him in the same breath

He's so mature but let's hope his mentality takes him even further. He needs to keep his head down and continue working hard.
There's everything to suggest that from his upbringing, attitude to life and training. He's always appeared to be level-headed and professional from an early age. It's no surprise that SAF a few years ago said," We've found one."

Was Ronaldo this composed at 18 in front of goal? Rooney was close but Mason is even more lethal than him I think, which is truly ridiculous.
No way. He was a very poor finisher at the beginning. If I am not mistaken, he had like 5 goals in each of his first two seasons. Obviously, he was extremely talented and such an excellent dribbler, but he was not such a good finisher. Later, he became the best in the world at it (while also the best at finding spaces near the goal).

His movement and striking of the ball is almost identical to Van Persie it's uncanny.

I hate hyping kids but Greenwood had been magnificent in the past few months. I wonder what's he's best position though. I think its RW.

Some players rip the youth teams/reserves apart but can’t make the transition. Greenwood absolutely made the jump to senior level and this is what’s to come from him. He’s going to be one of the most lethal strikers United has ever had. I’m absolutely certain of that.

At 22-23 he’s going to absolutely deadly.

The thing about him being compared to Rooney, Haaland etc is that he is nowhere near his peak physical form whereas those other two were already there in their teen years. Greenwood feels more like the skinny Ronaldo that showed up in England in 2003 so there is more levels for him to climb just by working at the gym.

A two footed Van Persie at the age of 18, it's gonna be a good decade.

He seems so calm and composed. Lockdown enabled him to put on bulk and and he looks a real player for it. Can't wait to see how he improves in the coming years.

this is the first time I’ve ever seen him compared to RVP.

It’s ridiculous how similar they move around the pitch.
I must have heard that comparison a hundred times now. It's so uncanny. Mason has the advantage of being so two footed. And the power in his shots! You almost want to take a second look at the small frame that generates auch hits with so little backlift.

It’s mad isn’t it! I love it when a commentator makes the comparison, as if it’s a new insight.

What strikes me is how calm he is, he scores brilliant goals and barely celebrates, like he knew he’d score, like whats all the fuss about?

I’m excited for the future with this boy

The ball absolutely jumps off his foot. It’s amazing. Barely pulls it back and it’s like he’s taken a full running go at it.

He's a number 9. Without doubt for me. Dont think from the games I've seen he's overly involved in general play but once he sniffs an opportunity in and around the box he's lethal. Against better teams he'll get shut out playing RF needs to be at the centre imo. Get sancho out right and him and martial fighting for the number 9

My wit's end
People keep comparing him to Van Persie, but I disagree.

Since the end of lockdown, Greenwood's played 239 minutes, been fouled 2 times, dispossessed 2 times, had 3 unsuccessful touches, attempted 10 shots, scored 2 goals, attempted 92 passes, successfully completed 85 passes at a rate of 92.3%.

RvP average a passing accuracy in the high 70%s for most of career; Messi in the mid 80%s; Ronaldo in the low 80%s: Mbappe's at around 80%; and Haaland is at about 70%.

To put it another way, Greenwood has had the ball 111 times since lockdown. Of those occasions, he either found a teammate, won a freekick or scored a goal 89 times. That's a ridiculous level of consistency. Almost superhuman. And he's so young that he started the season as a minor!

Greenwood is unlike any other player I can think of at the moment. Not only is he a deadly goalscorer, he's also able to use the ball efficiently in almost any situation. It's like he can predict the future and pick the best option almost every time. He breaks the mould of needing to be risky in order to have end product.

Comparing him to past players often does him a disservice when it skips over some of his most impressive abilities. The sky is the limit with this kid.

Great potential, clearly, but let's give the lad a chance to develop; if he's still banging them in for fun next year, when teams are developing a plan to contain him, then, perhaps, we can ask the question.
Stopping him from getting into finishing positions doesn't influence his finishing ability. That's a different point entirely.

We’ll see, we’ll see. Has to just keep doing what he does and not get too much into his own head.

I think people are wrong to blame the keeper for that first goal. It’s one of those examples where the slow mo doesn’t do the strike justice. He’s absolutely powered that with a magnificent strike, I don’t think the keeper has a chance unless by pure luck!

I think his current positions good for him. It allows him to get in the game, have a good amount of the ball and he don't need to get in behind to get his shot off. I'm not sure how his heading is but I think as a wide forward, he's got great quality and maturity. He could do step overs but picks and chooses moments well - Ronaldo at his age was a lot more immature though still quality . He reminds me in a way of Ravel actually (what he could have been) but let's see if he can make it to 20 goals

Exactly what I was thinking during the game.

I know it's early days, but I do think the potential is there to be as good as Van Persie, and if he steers clear of injuries then he could possibly even emulate him.

And if we're really, really lucky, he may even grow to be his equal.

I hear what you're saying, but confidence plays a huge part; if he gets marked out of a few games he could start snatching at the fewer chances he gets.

I honestly believe this lad is something special, but I've seen too many players burn brightly for a season only to fade into journeymen (across several clubs) to hang my hat on him being the best finisher in the league at this moment with so many other proven finishers out there.

This guy has the second best goals/minute ratio in the league behind only Aguero. Pretty spectacular.

His power with either foot definitely reminds me of Ronaldo, though obviously there are big differences. But as a defender it has to be terrifying, not being able to push him into a weaker foot

He reminds me of a young michael owen, he is absolutely ruthless in front of goal with composure beyond his years

I think he's noticeably different. One of his biggest strengths is his mentality. He has the air of invincibility about him that the great strikers have.

I think if we are that lucky, Mason will go much beyond RVP. The boy is very impressive. The only other players who were so good/complete at 18 in my memory were Messi and Rooney.

Messi took that to another level in his career, and Rooney had a great career (but not Messi levels).

Thankfully he has some good guidance from Ole who would have seen how Rooney and Ronaldo managed their careers.

There is no doubt Mason will have a good career. His challenge is to determine how good it will be...

@ivaldo I was surprised with lack of your annual insert player name is the best insert attribute in PL special this year, but you didn't disappoint.
