Remember when José said Rashford & Martial couldn't play together?

Did he say that?

I don't recall that. I thought he said Martial and Rashford don't play instead of Lukaku, because of what he thought Lukaku offers.
He probably did alluded to it, this is the man who wanted Martial sold and probably wanted us to sign some big lump with half the talent.

Can you believe this man made us have a front four of Rashford OR Martial, Lukaku, Lingard and Mata?

Their combination since the restart has been beautiful. Even though they've been teammates for years, it seems like the finally understand each others game and it's lovely to watch. They know when to link up but also when to display their individual brilliance.

Ole gets so much credit for this because he's trusted Martial as the No.9 and Rashford as the wide forward despite previous managers having it the other way around. It's clear for all to see these are both their best positions. Luckily for us they can still switch if the game needs it.

Their partnership means they aren't as expendable as posters were saying due to Greenwood's breakthrough and Sancho's potential signing.

Here's another stat for you:

Rashford has assisted Martial 5 times in the Premiership. Only two other couples have more - De Bryune to Aguero (6) & Traore to Raul (7).

I think at some point he nearly convinced us that Martial wasn't very good.

Throughout his entire career Jose has preffered known quantities in terms of players that he knows will give him solid performances, week in week out, and are in their prime. Sanchez is the prime example.

Manchester United was never the right fit for him. Rashford, Martial, Pogba. Arguable our best players, but too much flair and inconsistency for Mourinho. The error here isn't Mourinho's judgement, at the time both Rashford and Martial's consistency wasn't there. The error was the appointment of Mourinho in the first place.

And of course they can play together, talented players should always be on the pitch. It is the managers job to mould the team, Mourinho just didn't want to try.

Glad he is gone. A journalist should ask him what he thinks about Martal and Rashford.

Exactly. Imagine if Sir Alex thought that Rooney and Ronaldo couldn't play together because of their inconsistency and there was only one place in the team for them.

Every time they score it’s like a pin in the Jose voodoo doll.

Two amazing players that he nearly convinced us couldn’t play together and tried to ship one of them out. Should be up there with the most maligned Manchester Utd managers of all time just for that!

As much as I don’t like Jose, I’ll be routing for him this Sunday to pull one over the Foxes...

I used to love Mourinho. I'd spend hours arguing why he was one of the best ever and any team that got him should count themselves lucky.

That all changed after he joined United. I still get shivers thinking about the negative football we played, the constant bad press, the personal attacks on players, the endless excuses.

I think the "Mourinho is a dinosaur" narrative definitely holds some truth. His methods when dealing with individual personalities and tactics might have held up well 10 years ago but seem impotent now.

I'm definitely not writing him off though. If he can adapt in the same way Fergie did for so many years, then he might reach his former heights

Very good point. In fact it's very logical in the sense that Mourinho's brand of football thrives on structure and cutting out all risk taking and mistakes from the games. Against strong opposition, he often sets up on the counter and lets the other team have the ball. In that scenario, he wants his players to make 0 errors and frustrate the opposition. And then his forward players can sucker punch them when the opportunity arises. It's all very methodical and structures that it sucks the joy out of seeing something unique and exciting.

Of course he would hate players who are inconsistent and risk takers because it goes against the very DNA of his system. These players are his worst nightmare.

He’d be like “I sync I shouldn’t talk about players from other clubs.” Or he will try to take credit for playing Rashford on the wing and not as a #9.

They couldn't when they were at that age.

They're different (and much better) players today.

I assume this is supposed to be an anti-Jose thread, in which case you could definitely blame Mourinho for his poor coaching. But I think that's a slightly different point. I'd much rather praise Doc and Marty for how much better they've become.

They've improved indeed but that also has a lot to do with the confidence given to them from the go by Ole and his staff.

We should file a law suite on how poorly he managed our young forwards. Damages and what not.
