Romero offski then.

It’s going to be interesting to see who starts as the number 1. Pressure is going to be on both Dave & Hendo to perform to their highest level week in, week out in order to keep the other one benched.

I expect Romero to leave now. May be used in a possible Grealish deal.

He's had a real graded career so far.

Non league, L2, L1, Championship, Premier league over the last 5 seasons.

Really big decision having him back to compete next season!

I suppose he will play the league cup and FA cup games as a minimum - that could be up to 10 games.

You just know that our media team will milk this story for weeks to get some positive PR. Incoming interviews, Stories, former player comparisons and don't forget the usual Instagram takeover. Anything to calm down the Maguire story and lack of transfers.

Its wild, poor planning for sure.
He put the club in a very though spot to be fair. De Gea signed a contract with the club that reflects his status, tenure and future.

Dean Henderson decides to just have a monster season for a club everyone thought would get relegated, immediately making himself a very valuable and sought after player. No one thought that he'd take these kinds of steps so fast.

The timing of it all is just very, very awkward. Do you let a obviously massive talent go for near nothing? Do you let De Gea go for near nothing and gamble that Dean Henderson is somehow ready to be the #1 at Old Trafford after having a few bad games last season? De Gea is young still for a goalkeeper, he still got solid years left in him.

This way the club binds Dean Henderson to a wage that he knows he will get somewhere else, his season basically ensures that he'd be a starter for a PL club. Henderson is on a lot of money but he's not breaking the clubs wage structure.

It will be a very interesting season moving forward to see who ends up the #1 keeper and who will eventually move on loan.

That must be the biggest wage ever given to a homegrown player without ever starting a senior game aswell.

Would be a bit awkward now if he is shit for you.
 :nervous:

This is a good move all-round. De Gea knows he needs to buck up his ideas and Henderson knows he's being groomed for the number 1 shirt.

Crazy wages am sure Henderson would have been happy with half that, but it’s good to have a good player on board for the next 6 years.

£120k for a player to sit on the bench. And we wonder why we can’t afford to make transfers.

If Henderson does end up as our starting keeper £120k a week doesn't actually seem that bad, he won't get a renewal anytime soon after signing a new contract as well.

The contract protects his market value, he's someone who wouldn't be short of suitors for should we decide to sell him further down the line.

Goalkeeper is obviously a position that needs strengthening with De Gea's erratic form over the last 2 years. It's not even remotely arguable that it's the last area of the pitch that needs strengthening.
If your theory is right, then what was the sense in making De Gea the top earner at the club on an insane £350k a week last year - during his two years of erratic form, as you put it.

Let us not forget that at the end of July, Nemanja Matic, aged 32, signed a new three-year contract with us. That keeps him on our bench till the grand old age of 35.

And in June, last year, Juan Mata, then aged 31, signed a two year contract with an option to stay for another year - taking him to the grand age of 34. On the bench.

Puzzling as ever.

While Chelsea fill their boots with Chilwell now signed, we do what? Get Henderson, who is not first choice and certainly wasn't second choice in the past two seasons on a six-year deal. So strengthening in the one area of the pitch, you could argue, which is the last that needs strengthening. I say strengthening, because he hasn't been in our squad, having been out on loan.

Of course, what Sky DON'T say is that will undoubtedly mean losing Argentina international Sergio Romero, who we will let go for money. If not.. what the heck is going on? Personally, I would have dropped De Gea during last season, and played Romero because of his poor form. Romero is a top keeper. Best number 2 in the world, surely. But for some reason (wages) the Spaniard appears untouchable. If it had been Matic on poor form, or Fred, or Greenwood, then he would have been rested.

Sky Sports reporting they felt De Gea was not under enough pressure. What guff. What is Romero, if not pressure.

If Woodward thinks Henderson deal is pulling the wool over anyone's eyes. He is totally wrong. Our transfer dealings are again, a farce.
Just like a new signing. And once Pogba also signs, we are done for the summer.

Competition for places is ALWAYS a good thing. It's why we so desperately need new players

Very good, hopefully means De Gea won't have a future here after next season if he performs like the last 2 years

OMG... yes. Last year. Which will keep him at the club until June 2023, with the option to extend for a further year. What kind of crazy runs our football club.

HELLO
It’s great when a homegrown lad signs for your club on a long term deal, especially when they’ve looked as good as he has during his time at SU but to have one keeper on 120k and the other on 250k+ should be a concern. It’s not like another position where they can be used as cover somewhere else. It’s GK or bench. I imagine De Gea will be on his way out next year now but it’s poor management to have that predicament this season.
Theres no going back on DDGs shit contract, we've done the best thing we could to make up for it though. A 6 year contract is going to have inflated wages and Henderson has strong resale value.

No point digging a deeper hole because of the shit ddg contract by trying to keep both happy. Theres feck all risk in this.

Crazy money for a player who could be sitting on the bench. Having said that, if he manages to displace De Gea then we have a player on even crazier wages sitting on the bench. Glad he's staying though. Hopefully he can push on or push De Gea into performing.

Henderson is being paid what he is because it's a future wages...stop looking at it for one season. He's the future for United whether it's this coming year, or most likely in the 21/22 or 22/23 season.

This is a bridge deal and the competition will see who rises to the top. Ole always talked about competition for places and this is it. Henderson is a possible #1 for England and #1 for United. He showed that he can hang in the PL, albeit in a more defensive team, but he did good. Now he has to make more steps up for United and when he experiences his first European matches for United.

Why are people taking Jim White's wage report as a full-on, guaranteed payment? What if it totals 120k/week after performance-based bonuses?

I don’t think he ready but I’ll back him of course. Let’s see if he can really claim the shirt.

A very subtle way of telling Dave his costly mistakes will no longer be tolerated as the heir apparent is waiting in the wings, and it's only costing the club £120k a week.

Quite a bit of money, I agree.

He's a similar keeper to De Gea, in terms of skillset (main strength is shot stopping, weaknesses are distribution, coming off the line and command of the area). Until a couple of years ago, De Gea's incredible shot stopping made up for his shortfalls in other areas - hopefully the same proves true with Henderson.

None, but that wasn't what I took issue with, I took issue with you saying we didn't need to strengthen. However much De Gea is being paid is not a reflection of his current quality hence why it's a position that needed addressing.

It's a lot on wages, but I guess the gamble is that if he's top class in two years and is our number 1, then we're paying a top class keeper nowhere near as much as we are currently De Gea

Still, 120K to sit on the bench for a year... Not a bad gig.

I'm pleased for the kid. You want to see United youngsters come through. However, putting him on a bigger wage than Bruno Fernandes baffles me. God willing he proves to be worth it, cos it suggests this club has learned nothing from the overly large salaries we've spunked on players in the past seven years. I am sure Henderson would have taken £80-90k. Where was the need for this kind of deal?

I'll be the first to wish an Academy player comes good, but imagine if Henderson does not turn out good. We'd struggle to shift him with those wages.

Plus, what has he done for the team to earn that much money anyway?
