I have to say, some of you are a bit miserable. We've signed a versatile, talented, energetic midfielder who's entering his prime. Isn't this something to be happy about?
I don't know anything about him, but what I've read today makes me optimistic. He's highly spoken of, and a number of top clubs were interested. I look forward to seeing what he brings to the team.

Is it just me or are we signing a player to a position where we have Pogba, Fred, Matic and McTominay, but we still have to play Lingard/Pereira if Bruno is out?
And how many on your list are 7 out of 10 every week? We need competition not making people feel they are undroppable. Stop with this attitude, it's a loser mentality. Whilst we are on Van De Beek, Get Sancho and let our front 3 now compete for positions. Unless you are Messi or Ronaldo, no one should think that they are a guaranteed starter at this football club. No complacency should be tolerated if we want to rise again and get to the top. Get rid of Phil Jones , he contributes nothing to the team. No sentimentality is needed at top clubs.

Good signing, would provide some much needed squad depth and would be a good replacement for Pogba/Bruno if or when they get injured. He could also play as a #8 or even a #6. Hopefully we can sell Lingz and Pereira for a good fee. Add a CB and Sancho and I think we will have a squad good enough to compete for the title.

I love how it used to be the true officiall statement of a transfer happening was the BBC saying it was happening, hence why usually the BBC quote would be on the end of a thread title to signify it was really happening. Now they have been overshadows by 1 man and his 'Here we go!' phrase that's seen as higher tier of confirmation, love it

I just don't think he's good, Penna. Just because a player signs for us doesn't mean you should instantly change your opinion on a player you've held for a long time due to already watching him. Honestly, F.De Jong was the only Ajax player I thought would go on to be class from the crop that reached the European semis.

Van De Beek can cover for both Bruno and Pogba.

Fred is average, but he can do a job in the right game. Surely Pereira will be the midfielder to move, if anyone. It's as important we move the deadwood as make new signings. We need a lean, high quality squad.
People have really forgotten that Pereira even plays for us. He got an insane amount of minutes last year.
Fecking hell I genuinely forgot that Pereira is a thing. I listed out all our available CM's if VDB comes in and completely forgot to add in Andreas :nervous:

Wanted by many clubs, but wanted to come to us. And we were fast enough to make it happen.

Destroys so many false narratives that the moaners use to moan about.

Could be said about any team and any player. Fact is we were well stocked with options and for all we know ole could have been the one holding the deal up to give the existing midfielders a chance. Regardless of when we got him, we got him and look how it ignited the rest of our season.
We most definitely were not well stocked with options. On your last sentence, imagine how our season could’ve been without wasting half of it.

Some performances vs big teams from him. These are not highlights of how great he can be, but just clips of every touch hes had against top oppositions. Can see he's definately no Pogba/Bruno, and has some weaknesses in passing, but is overall clean in technique and very energetic in his play.

Unnecessary purchase. We only did this deal only because we thought other clubs were sniffing around and not because we needed him. I dont understand the point of this signing? Is he going to be a backup? Why are we prioritizing signing backups when the season starts in 3 weeks? And if he's not a backup, how does he fit? This is all just confusing.

A lot of posters on here thought Fernandes wasn't that good either, so excuse some of us for not trusting or appreciating some of the negativity every time we sign a player that's not exactly a Caf favourite. Ole has gotten most of his signings spot on also.

Very excited by this signing. He has excited me every time I’ve seen him, especially his big game performances in the champions league. Easy to see why Real and Barca were after him last year.

Great signing and at a good price of £35m. Higher standard of squad player compared to Andreas and Jesse.

Best case realistic scenario we have upgraded Fred and strengthened the squad. That's nice. It's not going to get anyone excited about next season though.

He will be good for us! most signings under Ole are well scouted and with long term purpose, and signed from a stronger position than some of the mercenary money grabs of decade past. Maybe the critics can wait and judge him after a few games at least? He made the Ballon D'Or 30man list after all and we did have a few spells where we relied on Mata and Lingard to turn our luck from bench hopefully we can sail trough injury spells and form dips this time around.

That's far too many questions

How about doing some research on the player first, then make an assessment of our needs. It does sound like you have no clue of what we need.

You seem eager to see him fail.
Didn’t you know? Stats are literally the only thing that matter in football, not how a player actually plays football.

We have no depth. Our depth is Lingard and Pereira. Should we go another season praying that Bruno doesn’t get injured? Because if we did that we would be a seeing a lot of Pereira in midfield if we don’t strengthen.

I think this will signal a shift from the 4231 to 433.

Great signing.
If this is true then this leads to the improvement of our whole team, especially the way our front 3 connects.

I really hope Ole stops 4231 and starts 433.

Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Pereira, Lingard are non-negotiable for me. Out asap. I know several other names are discussed in relation to exits, but those five must go, which would free up space and wages immediately.

That post makes no sense. Apparently coming from the premier league is a guaranteed success, but the players we bought from the premier league wasn’t a a success and the player we bought from the Portuguese league was a success. So that means Grealish will be a success but Van de Beek won’t be a success.
no mate - I just happen to think Grealish is better and also an easier fit. Looking good in Holland and in an Ajax team is def easier than shining with a bunch of rubbish players and saving them from relegation , in fact outshining any player in our team on our own pitch - plus Grealish is english. Sorry but that’s the negative - but I’m not downing the business - I just hope it does not get in the way of other business and I would love the cream of the english players at United because it creates an easier / stronger culture of togetherness..
as I said I still like the look of DVB

Our back up front 5 is Lingard Periera Mata Ighalo & James - And you’re confused?

Where would Bruno play in a 4-3-3? Doesn’t seem like a player that will work as an 8.

Imagine being unhappy with us signing a young promising player who has already shown he can play at top level  Even if he doesn't become a Messi of midfielders he surely should be a good player for us and add depth which we are lacking a lot. Our fans have been crying for months now because we made no signings and now when we made one you are crying again because his name isn't Sancho  I swear our fanbase is the worst.

Didn’t he play that position in his first couple games for us and was very good in the role? Or at least slightly deeper.

I don’t think he’s been bought to immediately displace Pogba or Bruno dude, this is a squad purchase and a bloody good one. As far as utility players go, this is a top drawer purchase.

It Means if either Pogba or Bruno are out for any reason we don’t fall off a cliff edge with quality, it means we can field DVB and still compete.

Dunno what the heck people are moaning at, this is a top drawer squad signing, much more sensible than spunking £80m on Grealish. Maybe it leaves us with funds for other positions?

If they were both €40m purchases I’d agree. But Villa want £80m for Grealish which isn’t worth it.
