Why not give them Pereira as part of the deal? Speaks the language, could do a job for Porto.

I'm not saying they're directly related, I'm just saying it'd be frustrating to see us spend €20 million on Telles with a year left on his contract, a bad value for money deal, whilst turning down to opportunity to sign Sancho, a good value for money deal.
Sancho at 120m is not a good value for money, though I would like us to sign him.

Upgrading one of our weakest position for 20m is not a bad deal. For what is worth, I do not know how good is this guy, but if they think that he is good enough to start, then 20m ain't too bad.

From what I’ve seen of them, I’d have overwhelmingly preferred Reguilon. Reguilon is far better at carrying the ball forward, and generally more ‘winger like’ in his play. Telles has brilliant delivery though, which would make a change. He’s not as fast nor as good a dribbler as Reguilon, but is one of those Bruno type of heart and soul leaders that will add character to our team, and could end up being a better signing than Reguilon even if not as gifted IMO.

It is not, but we need 2 forwards to add to the 3 we have and it's late in the window.

At this point, we have to cave unless we can sort out a loan for a Dembele.

I dont think you need to be an excellent defender to be a fullback any more. Look at all the top fullbacks in Europe, none of them are particularly good defensively. The role has changed massively in the last decade, its more about bombing foward in the modern game. Besides we already have a conservative right back in Wan Bissaka.
Shaw is a bit of a weird one, he isnt a top notch defender nor is he anything special going foward. A jack of all trades type of player. Gets the job down, but doesnt stand out either. If Telles hits the ground running, I reckon he'll displace Shaw as the first choice, not because he's a better player, but because he's an attacking fullback, which our team lacks.

Not to be a dick but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in 3/4 years Dalot is playing well somewhere in Europe while Williams is another we can’t move on because of his wages. I think right now the 2 players are about equal but I feel Dalot may have a lot more upside if he gets games and stays injury free. I know Ole sees him every day and he doesn’t seem to rate him. he’s not done much really for us apart from the PSG shot and the tranmere game but it just feels like he never really got going here and that he could have more to offer if he’s trusted.

Telles looks decent but you guys are mad if you think he’s just going to take shaws place and become one of the best full backs in the league? This is an absolute punt make no mistake. Shaw is currently a better player than Telles which is why I find this transfer strange. I wish we were buying someone potentially world class to really push past our dependence on Shaw but its looking like we are thinking short term on this. I wonder if they are panicking because of the fans totally freaking out and making reactionary buys to appease the mob. Sarr or Brooks next. I’d much rather Sarr or Brooks than nobody though. Anyway When shaw is fit he’s number one but we badly need the cover and we needed another left footed option in the position. If I was utd I’d also be moving heaven and earth to bring in a left footed attacker before the end of the window. It’s so simple but it could have a huge effect on our play.

Dalot's defending is a bit suspect. I always think of him as somewhere between a winger and right back.

Shaw is one of our weakest starting players? Everyone was saying how much we missed his link up play and presence after he got injured and now he's one of our weakest players according to this thread.. Telles isn't an upgrade either, he has a better cross than Shaw but defensively they're leagues apart. Don't get me wrong, Telles would be a quality back up option, I'm not arguing that, my main points are that he isn't better than Shaw, and his goal numbers have created the illusion that he is, and that he isn't worth €20 million with a year left on his contract.

Lastly and veering off topic, in my opinion €120 million for Sancho is still great value, World class potential right winger for the next 10 years in our weakest position, takes us to another level of flexibility and depth across the front 3 with our current attackers, highly marketable, English. That investment will repay itself no question.

ya but I get this feeling that he’s potentially good on the ball and has a rocket of a shot/cross but it’s all hiding somewhere In plain sight. Maybe I’m just totally wrong. He’s not developed enough yet but I think there’s a player there if he can stay fit. He’s a strong lad, good athlete... he can’t stay fit though.

It is funny that that is your opinion of Dalot.
For me, he is lacking in character, unremarkable going forward, and woeful defensively.
I guess we all see different things.

In a perfectly balanced team like Liverpool or Bayern then maybe so, but without a top level defensive midfielder and Pogba playing a deep position in midfield as well, being able to defend consistently well as a full back is still very important for us.

I know he’s been pretty crap for us. I just think there’s still a player in there. He’s a José player big and strong and mobile. maybe he’s lacking in character and that’s why he can’t show his game but I think he’s just had an unlucky time of it here with injuries, AWBs signing and manager changes and he probably is not settled or happy here.

Telles might be an upgrade for left back position which is one of our weakest position ( possibly the weakest overall). Our current LB is not Shaw but is the mean of Shaw and Williams considering that Shaw consistently is our for half of the season. Shaw has averaged 16 league matches and in total 23 matches in all competitions in his 6 seasons here. That is around 40% of available matches, and that includes sub appearances.

The ‘if Shaw stays fit’ is irrelevant. It is as doable as if ‘AWB was good forward’ or if ‘Smalling could pass’. It is a feature of Shaw on 6 seasons he has been here and the sooner we realize and do something about it, the better for us. Unless we are happy on playing Williams, Rojo, TMF or whoever is available for 60%+ of the matches there.

Honestly, 120m should not be for world class potential. It should be world class full stop. potential doesn’t always realize, in fact for United it has a long history of not being realized. We have had so many world class potential players that turned to nothing. I like Sancho from what I have seen, but 120m for him with the pandemic is a bit too much.

Telles reminds me of Ricardo Rodriguez but more aggressive. Reguilon would've been a better signing if it wasn't for the buyback clause.

Telles still looks far better than Shaw though. Especially if we buy a fast left sided centre back.

Telles Alaba Maguire AWB.

That I could accept...
Was thinking that too. Rodriguez is a good comparison

Great post. The mean of Shaw and Williams is a good way to put it. We are constantly without Shaw, and Williams is not good enough at left back. We need someone and we may as well go for someone who is good going forward cos our RB doesn't offer enough there.

Dalot is more talented than Williams in my opinion.
I can name a huge number of fullbacks who had defensive issues when they were young but more than made up with their other skills.
Often this type of player needs to mature, and while never becoming defensive beasts, they are not liabilities either.
Point being, people wrote off Dalot way too soon here, and our lack of patience may be other team's fortune in the near future.

Think ole will shift shaw inside to partner maguire.
Don’t think so. I think Shaw is good defensively but he’d be a lot less comfortable in the middle than Lindelof and there’s nothing to suggest he’s any better in the air, which is the only potential reason he’s start ahead of him.

He doesnt have the concentration levels to play centrally. He has all the other attributes but Shaw has moments of just watching the game and gets caught

i agree, has a lot of pace and energy. Would fit the league well. Wouldn't mind him, but he is young
Yeah he was my second favourite. Looks very solid in all departments and mature for his age.
He'll probably get a move to one of the smaller clubs in Italy in the next 18 months, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's converted into a left-sided central defender in a three when he's there, he's certainly got the tools for the job.

Fair point, the mean of both players does make it one of our weakest positions. I do see Shaw as our best defender currently however, and Telles would be back up, so to overpay on a back up player that's free next summer is questionable, £10 million is about right in my opinion. Sancho's numbers and performances from last season suggest he's close to that level already, he's well on track, you only earn that world class title from playing in the biggest teams with the most coverage though so he needs that platform first. If it isn't going to be here he'll earn it elsewhere.

That would be incredibly interesting, not to say a total shock and likely to crash and burn immediately.

Yous could be right, but there doesnt even seem to be any links with a centre back now after initial rumours of a left footed one.

Might just be me adding 2 plus 2 and getting 5

I doubt he is taking Shaw’s spot in the starting eleven, but Shaw might be moved to CB and he might be succesful there.

It is pretty hard to be a flop if you cost 20 million euros and we need a body anyway. Why not.

That is what I mean, it doesn’t matter how good Shaw is (and while he is decent, he is nowhere near a world class LB) if he is out for most of the season. Even if Telles comes as back up (which I don’t think is the case considering that Ole seems to want having settled teams), he will play more than Shaw simply by being fit.

We should have cut the losses with Shaw some time ago. Even if he was fecking Maldini, if you just cannot count at all on him being fit, it just isn’t worth persisting. While here, he has averaged only 3 more matches (per season) than Jones and Jones is a walking meme for being always injured.

I don't know anything about this player but this is decent for a fullback. If he can actually defend then we could be in business.

"Last season at Porto, Telles made a total of 49 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and 12 assists, which is a 25 goal contribution for the club, which would be great to see something similar at United, if the club is successful in signing there player"

That's exactly what he is. His strengths are Shaw weaknesses and viceversa. Telles is great going forward. He also rarely gets injured. However defensive wise he's a bit meah and he's pretty light weight.
Would be very nice to be able to make an attacking change at fullback as well when we need a goal rather than only being able to swap like for like with our front three.

Said this before. 0 0 70 mins gone against most teams outside the top 6, taking of shaw and awb for attacking fullbacks is probably the type of change that would most likely win us a game.

True. I have it in my head that this'll be Shaw's best season for us fitness wise (a bit foolish I know) hence me being on the fence towards us overpaying for a back up with a year left on his contract. He'd be a quality back up mind so screw it, let's hope we get him at a good price.

Feckin hell you massive whoppers, is 27 the new 29 now? 27 and you’re complaining he’s getting a 5 year contract. It takes him to 32, not 67!

Yeah but age gets rounded up at Caf (by decade), which means that he is 30, and add 5 years for the contract and so he will be 40. Which is dangerously close to 50, the age when all footballers die.

RIP!
