Fergie bought us Zaha before he retired. We then sold Zaha cheaply for 3m, and spend over 300-400m over the years to bring in many other expensive players which didn't work.

He is easily the best player on the pitch tonight, none of our defenders could handle him.

And that's Man Utd way of doing business.

The result and performance were awful. Also want to point out VAR is killing football. Just cancel that whole business already. I rather see referees feck up again, than this VAR farce.

terrible performance. Why can’t we play better football? I don’t mind if we lost, if we played well. But, we were terrible. No passion and desire. Not the best way to start off the season, but I feel that we can turn it around once Awb and Greenwood gets back into the team. Maybe Matic as well. Might also need to replace Linderoff with Tuanzebe or Smalling or Bailiy.

Just need some more minutes and we’ll be fine. Typical CAF over reaction as usual. Europa killed our pre-season unfortunately

Aside from the whole team looking so undercooked, I'm not sure I've ever seen such neglect of a whole side in any team. No right back or winger worth the name today (Greenwood isn't one). And the indescribable Lindelof was at RCB. Any surprise all of Palace's attacks came down that side? I'll watch MOTD just to hear ex pros analyse Lindelof today. Gosh!

Might be a bit kneejerk but I think this will be Ole's final season.

Sancho and Telles won't help with disgraceful, gutless performances like today.

Coming back into the new season so unfit is shameful regardless of no pre season, other teams didn't come back so unfit and rusty.
I agree with this, but disagree with most of the rest. I think our coaching staff have completely screwed up the (lack of) pre-season, and this could well dictate the narrative of the whole season.

Tranfers don’t make a blind bit of difference to this complete lack of professionalism.

Yes it's so important to play out the back, so important !

Hope the 15-20 we get for Smalling is worth getting 9th this season. Put this entirely on Ole. He has no clue defensively - every time they broke we pissed our pants. How he persisted with that partnership to start the season is beyond me.

Oh and Atkinson can do one.

Got it all wrong as usual. Continued from the end of last season, lacklustre. Rashford, I forgot was playing, martial had no service, bruno has been infected with whatever the other players have, lindeloff is useless, maguire we overpayed for, shaw was wasteful, james useless as usual, de gea made a couple of mistakes again. I did think Mctominay played well and DVB was probably my man of the match, mainly because everyone else was rubbish. Ole is not the man to take us forward, the Glazers do not care where we end up and we still have no style of play, 18 months into Oles management.

Nice to see VDB get a goal on his debut.

But, the negatives far outweigh the positives. Isn't even up for debate, imo. The passing was rubbish, we created so little, we played with very little tenacity or intensity until around the 80th minute and we are so, so easy to score against. Other teams seem to find it so easy to score against us, yet we have to work incredibly hard to get our goals.

The coaching needs to be better. It doesn't matter who is brought into the club because the coaching is a huge hindrance. Our players take too many touches, they take too long on the ball, they make stupid passes that are either underhit or are never going to make it to the right man or are cut out, and we lack any real composure or control over the game. Second best today.

Disappointed that this is how we start the season. For morale, that's quite damaging. Now we're already playing catch-up and still have loads to do in the transfer market. Shit planning.

When CP had the ball wide they had Schlupp, Townsend and Zaha with the ball and all of these players can beat defenders with dribbling and pace. When we have the ball wide we had James, Rashford and Shaw and all most of the time pass the ball back because they are not a threat.

I wonder if Rashford's back injury is still affecting him because he really has not played well since. I think he is afraid to take on defenders and use his top speed as it could put him in dangerous spots. It's rare that I see him at full speed anymore. And really he is not a good player without his speed.

Sadly, this means we need a RW and LW and it doesn't look promising we will get one.

SAF needs to go to have a word with Ole and give him a proper dressing down. What was Ole thinking starting James and Fosu Mensah on the right? Made us completely unbalanced from the off.

I tell you what was shocking.
The fear of passing through the lines has emerged again.

This is worrying. We pass it side to side side to side wings to wings but never play a quick pass through the centre to the advanced players.

Defending shambolic and thoroughly on toast we were.

But but but I thought whenever the caf thinks a line-up sucks we will play great, attacking football with blistering pace?
Honestly people blaming those who moan in matchday thread should have a hard look in the mirror. The lineup choices were terrible and the performance was crap, but there were still some moaning about people moaning about us. Like if someone want to wear a red tinted glasses and only read positive comments then I'm not sure this forum or internet for general is for them.

Pogba should go. We need better than Lindelof. Try Henderson next PL game. Sancho and central defender in. Maybe bring back Zaha and Moyes' daughter.

Shite. All around.

So tired of DeGea, Lindelof, Pogba and how overrated they are.

So fed up with the lack of quality McTominay, Shaw, James, Pogba.

It’s not fun being a Man United supporter anymore.

Penalty was a joke
The retake was a joke
The decision to allow teams to change the taker in a retake is a joke
But yes our performance was a joke as well
The rules allow a different player to take a retaken penalty. But the penalty and the decision to re-take were definitely a joke.

It’s incredible how you have zero width these days. The wingers like to play on the inside, your fullbacks don’t overlap or aren’t able to create on their own.

Given the attacking talent you have, you’re clearly capable of beating anyone, but in the games where it’s close, or the opposition doesn’t allow you any space in the middle, you look incredibly toothless. Has become particularly apparent when you’re behind and chasing the game. The opposition has no problems with crowding the middle and giving you room out wide, as you’ve no-one who’s a threat there.

We didn’t play well. No energy and the penalty decision was a joke.

VDB looks promising but too may lacklustre players. We are a mid table team.

Wow! that was utter garbage. We'll struggle to make top 4 this season with this squad.

Coming back into the new season so unfit is shameful regardless of no pre season, other teams didn't come back so unfit and rusty.

McTominay and James should never play for this club again. Will never get to the level we need to even challenge for top 4 year in year out, never mind back to winning the PL.

Pogba didn't even look bothered and yes on his day he is unplayable but he has far too many games where he is shocking and just looks lazy and uninterested.

£80M for Maguire is madness and Lindelof is worse than Bailly and Smalling, he is meant to be a ball playing cb but he is rubbish on the ball.

Rashford will also never be good enough for where the club aspire to be. Since returning from injury he has been awful. He might play great on a good day but on a bad day he is one of the worst attackers to ever play for Manchester United. This is not hyperbole, I have literally not seen more than five strikers in the history of the PL as bad as him on a bad day. His bottom level is appalling.

Fernandes was shocking today as well.
You’re talking nothing but facts here! We deserve better. Enough is enough.

Fosu-Mensah was probably our best player today. Says it all really. Truly shocking.

We started with 4-0 last season but did not do any well after that.

Shouldn't take much out from 1st game of the season.

The whole handball thing is a joke too.

Far too harsh to be awarding penalties like that all the time, especially at such close proximity. Soon you'll see players just aiming at arms in the hope of winning penalties.

Only ourselves to blame and we need to bounce back quickly. We have talent in the side. Just needs to get fitter and play as a team.

Our forward line/wings are horrific in their service. They just don't look to run past defenders. Always sideways passes. No crossing.

Everything is so congested and tippy tappy.

I agree. Our threat from the wings is non-existent and hence we have to adpat but we simply aren't even playing through the lines in the centre which is even more worrying.

Worse still is that we have no plan of using different strategies.
Under SAF we had 50 different ways of playing.

Thank you. Especially on our right side. There's absolutely no one. Ole is completely clueless.

penalty and that retake debacle aside, very concerning performace. Laboured, rusty, disjointed , not enough urgency. Palace sucked us in and countered at pace down the left with confidence.

Very disappointing defeat on the season opener, very much punished for a slow start to the game. Quite a number of poor performances all around, Lindelof will bare the most of the criticism with a hat trick of errors. We will probably blame the defeat on poor fitness compared to our opponents, it is a fair excuse I think but we are going into a harder fixture against Brighton so will need to get up to scratch quicker.

A few thoughts:

Van de Beek should have started instead of Pogba. I get the Pogba is more or less the main man there but he clearly wasn't fit while Van de Beek has had some minutes under his belt for club and country. There was a lot of pressure coming off there bench for him, fair play to hi for getting the goal.

Thought both VAR calls were harsh. Lindelof was very unlucky to be penalised for the handball, the action was normal and the ball was played at close quarters so didn't really have a chance there. And with the retake, I thought De Gea's right leg was still over the line. Nonetheless it wasn't the reason we lost this game.

Hopefully this makes Woodward more eager to go back into the transfer market now.

This performance contained the worst of all our 3 previous managers since SAF.

No style of play, no attacking threat and the buildup so slow that the Palace players could go for a drinks break and we still would not have gotten the ball into their box.

Pathetic. From a sports perspective; from a Manchester United perspective. No vibe - no crowd. No energy. No tactics. Rubbish by Ole. Absolute dogsh1t by the officials and by VAR. Abysmal by Ed and the American clowns. I watched a bit of Dortmund. Should Sancho come to OT? Don’t know. Thought some of the players played with heart. Harry among them. But this version of the game, with this officiating, these owners, this damn Covid. I lost interest in it tonight - switched off the telly- I don’t expect anyone to care in here. But that’s my vibe from tonight. Best wishes to all.

UTD! I am not fond of the Glazers.
Positive start to the season. From back to front solid performing. When you get transfers early in, hence positive atmosphere around players and the club you can instantly see it in the performance. Dvb first goal! Get in!

Honestly, were absolutely horrible from front to back. Same continues, same players let us down. Not that anybody should be surprised. Hope lives for the better days.
