Sure, and those arguments are all fine (if indeed it turns out to be the case), but - again - it's not about Cavani in isolation, it's people responding to a pattern of deal that we've seen the club make and get very little out of.

When you add to that to your second sentence and the general frustration that we're, probably, going to be starting the season with our best 11 being identical to last season you can understand why people are feeling deflated by the deal.

From my personal point of view, although I hope the deal will be a success, I think it's an example of the sort of transfer that the club has tried to pretend they wouldn't make under Ole and (along with the shambolic window generally) paints a picture of a club that just does not learn its lessons. If, at least, it's a substantial less risky proposition than Sanchez then it's one thing, but I'm not going to pretend I have any enthusiasm for a 33 year old Cavani in a United shirt (although I will fully admit I did not particularly rate him in his prime).
Yes. I understand the frustration. I share the same feelings as well. I'm just trying my best to look at this deal on its own merits rather than let my frustrations color my view of this deal.

For all intents and purposes, it is looking like same starting 11 as last season but with a slightly better bench.

We have plenty of better reasons to criticise Ed/Matt on transfers. I suggest we focus on those valid reasons instead when we want to let off steam on Ed/Matt. Let us judge this deal on its own merits. If it makes you feel any better, go watch his videos that have been shared. He is, at least, very skillful. Otherwise, you can go watch his ballet dance photos, if you like that sort of thing.

Could it be as simple as, sign him at the last minute to save a few million in wages?

The risk that comes with this deal is simply that if it doesn’t work out we haven’t improved our attack. Several teams in the premier league have spent money and spent it well, if Cavani and VDB don’t improve us we can easily end up falling further behind.
The same can be said for all those teams that have spent money. We could catch up and they could fall behind.

Well yeah, it’s just that clubs around us aren’t relying on a 33 year old striker to bolster them. All transfers carry risk, that isn’t a profound statement, it’s just that some carry more risk than others.

Any upgrade is good. He’s an obvious upgrade on Ighalo, who leaves in 2 months

The signing of Cavani is a positive one,.

The transfer strategy, the approach to certain other transfers is atrocious.

Many people here hating on the transfer because they can’t differentiate between the two completely separate issues.

Lukaku would never accepted being Martial’s cover. Cavani will.

Whether Cavani has anything left in the tank remains to be seen, but if he does this is actually great business. Give the man a chance.

If he is signed to be our main RW/striker and, to rotate with Greenwood.. then this is a disaster ...
But if he is here to replace Ighalo... then this is a brilliant signing

So all depends on if we get that RW by tomorrow night

Vardy is 33 and I don't see Leicester fans complaining. I'm looking forward to seeing Cavani in a United shirt. Hopefully he still has goals in him.

Yup. The least we can do right now is just give the man a chance.

From the looks of things, Greenwood will be the RW. That's why we went for Cavani. Because with Greenwood on the right and Ighalo leaving soon, we would have no other striker to cover for Martial and provide competition.

If anyone thinks there is no possible huge value in this signing then one needs to only look to our bench today.
Exactly. I think we have to start accepting that we will end up with the same starting 11 as last season, but with a slightly stronger bench. With the failure to land Sancho, this is the least we could do. Prop up the squad depth.

Ole then on Sky Sports when asked about it

"You can't say anything about it when a deal is done, if it is"

Worst avoidance of the question ever. It's obviously gonna happen.

Mourinho brought Drogba back to Chelsea to bolster them when Mourinho last won the league. It’s fine if Cavani is a back up to Martial.

We’ll just have to wait and see if he can stay fit and contribute.

On a free transfer, it's a no brainer, we need a goalscorer and he's a proven goalscorer.

Okay, he's 33 years of age but give him the two years and let Greenwood develop. I do think this is the end of Ighalo though, they may even cut short his loan spell in my opinion.

'Wow brilliant. Another striker that we can play on the wing instead of getting a proper Right Winger.
Don't worry, absolutely no chance he is coming here to play right wing, and we are getting Pellistri and Telles anyway.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
Like who?
We wanted Jovic who has been available all summer but isn’t anymore because they’ve now loaned Mayoral instead. I know this is a mad suggestion but maybe we could have decided to go and get Jovic 4 weeks ago.
yup, absolute state of the negativity regarding Cavani when our “attacking” bench looks like today. My word, not a striker on it.

Some of these people really do have shit for brains.
You could have posted this exact comment in the Ighalo thread after we signed him. Oddly enough it’s about the right player not just getting anyone in. Shit for brains indeed.

After being very underwhelmed last night at the thought of signing Cavani I’m now coming round to the idea and may prove to be a shrewd signing by us. It all rests on whether he can stay fit or not, I’m hoping last season was just unlucky for him and it’s not a case of injuries catching up with him at this stage of his career.

More bullish on this signing now that we're bringing in a FB who can cross the ball

Might be able to make use of his aerial prowess now

So essentially we’ve just upgraded on Ighalo who wasn’t playing anyway. You can see why people are losing their shit then? I’m not overstating it, but when we get fecked very hard, don’t surprised.
You are right but us not getting rid of players also fecked us over, we have so many below par players that no club wants to buy, let's see if we end up signing him, so far nothing concrete

Hate to break it to you but I always felt he could and should have been better aerially

Exactly. There are risks, yes. But there is a lot of potential as well. For now, let's just hope the injuries are behind him and he can contribute positively to our season and squad.

With the signing of Telles imminent as well, this looks like we have shored up our bench a lot better compared to last season.

That may be but I've watched him score his fair share of headers for PSG and Uruguay over the years.

I'm not saying he's Ronaldo or anything like that, just that he'll be the best aerial threat we'll have in attack the minute he signs his contract

Yes, definitely, I think he'll add another dimension to our game.

Not only have we shored up our bench/squad depth, but we also have more tactical flexibility now, with Telles joining as well. I just hope the plan works.

Read this back to yourself a few times and then realise that you've completely lost the point of what it is to be a supporter
