Should we consider selling Harry Maguire?

Maguire was bad but Bailly is part of that reason .
Maguire was catastrophic about 4 of them goals were conceded because of his errors. Bailly didn’t cover himself in glory but this isn’t going to fly.

Especially when Maguire has been awful for a while, not just today.

I suppose the thing on his side is that he doesn't lack in self-belief.

Maguire is more of a Phil Jones than Phil Jones. No chance of getting a buyer.

The mistakes are on Maguire but I think he made them because Shaw and Bailly were no where to be seen. Shaw in particular forgot what position he was playing. Maguire was trying to cover too much space and failed to cover any of it. This should get sorted in training.

He can't defend in space, fine inside the box generally but his mobility was an obvious and immediate issue as soon as he was signed. An issue that was going to have long term influence on how Utd have to set up.

Shit signing.

We need to sack whoever signed off on it out of all the other potential cheaper CB options at the time.

Even his replacement at Leicester looks a player and cost a quarter of the price.

Our recruiting/scouting has cost us heavily now that we don't have the greatest manager ever to make up for it

80 million. Then made him captain. This club.
Evra was commenting on how much of a joke it was naming him captain 3 months into his United career earlier before today's match and he's spot on.

Depressing how much we've fallen behind the true elite of the game

Is it crack cocaine? If anything Bailly covered for and was dragged out of positioning because of him.

Maguire was bad but Bailly is part of that reason .
Maguire's CB partners seem to have an obligation to make him look good. It should be the other way round. He's the 80m signing after all

I would rather spend Sunday afternoon spooning with Rihanna rather than watching United. However, this thread is about Maguire. Is there any reason to hold on to him, he’s been a catastrophic signing, and I feel long-term he’ll be a hindrance to us putting together a solid back four with all his limitations.

Under a tree.
And then buy who that will be a definite improvement, Soyuncu?

He might have started off the season very badly, but United did have the second best defensive record in Europe in all competitions last season.

So many United fans said at the time he isn't good enough and we are overpaying for mistake player. And the amount of fans who slated us for saying that and were pointing out how much or f a leader he is, how great in the air he is blah blah blah.

Half of our fan base are absolute morons.

He’s totally out of form after Mykonos and will never justify his fee. But he’s a good CB.

There’s been incessant talk of getting a partner for the £80M CB we bought from Leicester to get the best out of him, but truthfully, I don’t think Maguire is good enough to be starting for us, and I feel we’ll need to find a “partner” for the so called “partner” we are supposed to be looking for Maguire.

I fail to see anything he excels at. Positioning, aggressiveness, leadership/organising, speed, tackling, sweeping/covering. Nothing. Maybe he’s decent aerially, but even then he’s extremely wasteful when in the opposition box. His conduct off the pitch is also questionable.

Should we try and get some of the money back?

Discuss.
Sell him to who?City signed 2 centre backs this summer so they won’t come back in for him....Liverpool wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole....Can’t see the other top 6 clubs wanting to sign him.
His form has been nothing short of shocking this season....It would be natural to assume that his Greek ordeal is still playing on his mind, but then Lindelof and Baillys form probably means that it’s a lot more than that.

I never for one second thought Maguire was world class.I always knew that would never be in the same league as Rio\Vidic...But I guess it looks like hes not even a competent PL Centre half any more....

Laughable, who in their right mind would buy him?

We're a laughing stock at the moment and having our club captain serving up embarrassing displays on and off the pitch hasn't helped one bit...

We can't sell him.
No one will buy him and he's too expensive to sell.

What we can do is stop playing with the high line and adjust the tactics accordingly. When you played with slow central defenders it's much better that your central midfielders to be more mobile and active. I think a big reason why we were better defensively when Fred-Scott was the base of the midfield is they are much more mobile than Pogba and Matic.

But it will come with a caveat that the football won't be as attacking and if the opponent manages to take Bruno out of the game, we're fecked basically

Would struggle to get £20m right now. Horrible player. Slow, bad decision maker, not a leader.

I agree with all that - and then there are things like the first goal today that had nothing to do with pace. It's exactly the sort of situation where you'd expect an experienced, expensive defender - who's wearing the armband no less - to take charge of easily. Instead he performed an impromptu comedy show. God only knows what the feck he was trying to achieve there.

One piece of advice for Harry... get psychological help. I had a feeling when that accident in Greece broke out, it would definitely affect his performance this season. It’s a nightmare become true now

I keep making this point over and over again but ANY defenders would look exposed in this set-up.

First of all, we don’t press. The forward don’t press and the midfield don’t press.

Secondly, the midfield are all over the place. We generally play two players with an attacking mindset and then Matic as a lone DM. With no pressure on the ball and no organisation in midfield, it makes it easy for teams to pass through the lines

Third, we compound both of the above issues by asking our defenders to play a high line. It’s an absolute recipe for disaster. No pressing, no organisation and a high line.

We can disagree on the individual quality of some of these players but Maguire is an international CB who has been a success in the PL for other teams. Lindelof is a regular for Sweden and has played in major tournaments. They might be short of world class but they’re not “garbage” or “useless”...they are just left exposed and their weaknesses exploited time and time again

He is your archetypal player that thinks he’s made it by signing for United even though it was yet another panic buy. He has become to believe his own publicity and become lazy. The Greek thing hasn’t helped but he just is that good.

ASAP, with many others, but he's there to stay and even if the Glazers&Woodward company wanted they wouldn't be able to get rid.

This is the first time I’ve seriously questioned him. He’s started this season off appallingly. Have to admit I thought he started doing pretty well last season.

This is clearly on Ole, it's his signing and he only wanted Maguire and no one else.

Cant believe we paid 80m for him. 80m is what you would pay for a VVD, Rio or Koulibaly level CB.
Years of mismanagement are catching up with us.

AND they made him captain after a few months at the club. It cant get much lower than that.

Our worst ever signing.
Alexis wasn't that long ago

He might end up up there though at this rate...

We don't seem to have any CB partner that can consistently make up for his weaknesses at the moment unfortunately so I fear it'll only continue this route until we address the position again

Yeah, I’ve always been positive about maguire, and he can be a solid player, but I would nearly agree now, and we would struggle to get half of what was paid back.
Just disastrous in so many ways today.
