Yeap. That should be a penalty as well. I don't know why officiating seems to be following trends nowadays. A few years ago, the refereeing officials were talking about clamping down on these sort of things but this seems to have gone down in priority. They're focusing on accidental handballs and all the nonsense about natural position and what not nowadays.

This one actually worse than what Maguire did. James didn’t even get anything on the ball while Maguire got something on the ball. We have seen this times after times, they will never give a penalty for it. The only thing it will ever be given penalty for this if it was a push from behind where the player was nowhere near to get the ball at all.

Thought he was fine yesterday but given what's happening this season, the spot light is always going to on him more so than what the young kid James done. Same but not the same. Harry should consider himself lucky cause if the penalty went in and we lost, the pressure in the media and the fan base would have ramped up 10 fold....

Good game yesterday

His positional sense was brilliant (well it has to be he has no pace)

Looked very dominating..

Apart from the Smalling esque takedown he was very solid and usage of the ball was ok

Other than the man handling, which should have resulted in a penalty, he was fine.

He's still clearly playing out of his poor form. There's always going to be jitters, especially as a defender.

Agreed. It’s a bit sad that some can’t drop the pathetic agenda for just one day.

Get rid of Smalling, he'll give too many penalties with his hand grabbing obsession. Maguire did it and wait.. ok point is, hand grabbing,, shirt pullings or extreme example (Mag's choke hold) are still too common, usually it doesn't get punished. VAR system still have so many grey areas and therefore still easier to be exploited.

That said, very good performance, showed no indication he recently was injured.

 Good. Thankfully and admirably he always get fit and back from injury a.s.a.p. Cheers and even when he's injured on the field, he tend to play it out as best as he can until the end. If only our injured CB squad can have the same level of dedication and carefulness.

Having good support from midfield helps defense tremendously. No wonder we had one of the best defense stats last season.
If you recall, our best defense runs last season is when Fred-McT play isn't it, and then Fred-Matic followed by McT once he's back. Our defense gets worse once Pogba replaced either on of 'em but we do improved in attacking slightly, but that probably has more to do with Martial and Greenwood upping their game post-lockdown. Even before that, our common suspects in defense always make mistakes though, but usually covered by Fred, McT and Matic.
Yeah that's true. We've lost 2 goals in last three games (Newcastle Shaw OG, PSG Martial OG). The midfield is really doing it's job in that regard.

Azpilicueta does it every set piece, he even threw McTominay to the ground on the first United corner.
Exactly what I told my Chelsea supporting mate who reckons they should be getting five penalties a game and would be champions if referees wouldn’t screw them over.

Penalty incident aside, thought he was the stand out performer yesterday. Lost count of how many crosses he cleared, but seemed to be in the right place every time Chelsea whipped one in - mostly clearing to a team mate as well, keeping the ball in the team.

Considering how much pressure he was under to perform, thought he proved what a calm and collected head he's got on his shoulders, and why he deserves the captaincy. MOTM for me.

But if people only criticise him after he has a Spurs like game they get accused of coming out in droves and piling on only when the player makes a huge mistake. Surely one is allowed to look beyond whether the goals against column says 0 or 5 and have an opinion?

Why criticise him at all after he’s had a good game? Jumping on him over a bit of grappling in the box is petty and stinks of agenda posting.

What? I mean it’s something he does constantly. It’s not like people are reacting on just yesterday’s game.
I think yesterday he had some really poor moments where again his positioning and decision making left a lot to be desired but then he also had moments where he dI’d some really good defending. I personally dislike his wondering positional sense. He makes everything harder for everyone else and he did it a few times yesterday.

Overall he had a good game and was pretty solid bar a few mistakes Chelsea didn’t take advantage of. Shaw covered his mistakes well a few times.

Should add no idea if SAF was in the VAR box holding a gun to the Var ref but that was a stone Waller of a penalty.

Forgetting the penalty, he played well, calm and composed and commanding of his area. Got caught flat footed a couple of times but nothing that cost us. Lindelof was still better, but at least hes getting back to form after a horrific start to the season.

Please. Name me a defender who doesn’t grab players in the box. If it was VVD doing the exact same thing then no one would care. But this is Maguire we’re talking about here, so the caf is up in arms about it. I suspect people are actually quite annoyed that a penalty wasn’t given against him, such is the pathetic state of support in here. A penalty would’ve served as a much better stick to beat him with but alas, it wasn’t to be.

He was fine because he avoided (thanks to the CM pairing, his own position or the general tactics) being exposed in 1v1 with any of the Chelsea attackers.

Never. You have United fans in this thread disappointed that he didn’t concede a penalty in order for them to come here and push their agenda. Pathetic thing to see really.
OMG I can't believe Im reading so many "United supporters" who seem upset that a penalty wasn't called. I have seen agendas against our players before, but this is taking it to a whole new level. We have such a toxic fan base...

No, the reason no one would care is because he isn’t our player, it wasn’t against us and maybe people don’t watch Pool games. If VVD did that to our player people would be outraged. The truth is there was a couple of times in the game where Maguire had a hold of someone on set plays, getting dangerously close to the edge.

What is my agenda exactly?

The fact of the matter is, Maguire had a good game and you’re whining over a non-existent penalty. Get a grip.

my wine is more about your wine complaining about people saying it should have been a penalty which it should have been. He had a good game, doesn’t distract from the fact he still made plenty of errors outside of just that penalty claim.

You’re clearly trying to push the idea that Maguire can’t be questioned. Why I don’t know. Some people just can’t seem to have an adult and objective conversation about the actual performance of our players and need to either be over the top in their defence of him or the opposite and go over the top in their attack.

Makes this whole forum pointless.

Just perplexed by comments like this, are you actually serious? Is your TV really small? He wraps both (!) hands around the player and obviously uses him as a springboard to jump himself to clear the ball. It’s quite telling as Azpi is jumping exactly 0 cm in the air. Stonewall penalty and a huge mistake by VAR, this time going in our favor. This is the kind of situation where you would claim 100% it’s a penalty if it’s Zouma on Fernandes.
If it was a stonewall penalty, VAR would have awarded it.

You should be praising his experience in the situation, doing just enough to keep it a legal hold. We literally kept a clean sheet with DDG having frig all to do for 90 minutes. It was a good defensive performance. Strange to be criticising a valid header where two sets of referees deemed it not a foul. Massive agenda.

By all means, level criticism against a player when it’s warranted. In this instance it’s not.

Is it only me, or doesn’t it look like someone has told him to not take forever on the ball? He looks much faster to deliver his passes when they pass around in the back line and has stopped the slow trotting he did before.

It's like some 'fans' have a hard time dealing with a good performance from Maguire. I understand not liking a player but going out of your way to look for holes in a good game just seems strange and immature to me.

Like you said, he was the stand out performer to me. Followed his good performance vs Newcastle with another one yesterday. Hopefully this is a clear sign of him getting back to the level we know he's capable of.

Him and Lindelof were both solid, I felt we ended up getting too deep to protect that slow duo with a slow DM in front though, and when McTominay came on we were able to push out more.

Matic is always dropping too deep imo.
