Film Films that really don’t live up to the hype

Not saying The Godfather trilogy is bad, but I've just never been able to get passed film 2 part 1.
Was never a massive fan of The Matrix either. Probably was a bit young when I first watched it.
Godfather 2 was even better than the original but the third film fell off a cliff.

I've never worked out how a director can make Godfather 1 and 2 and Apocalypse Now but then produce nothing but utter rubbish.

A lot of people really hyped up Django Unchained to me, and I was left pretty disappointed when I watched it.

Also the Revenant won so many awards, and I considered it a waste of my money when I went to see it.
Django was just ok but The Reverent was utter rubbish.

Nolan's last great film was the dark knight.

Everything else after that overrated.
Probably true. Dunkirk was 'ok' but definitely doesn't deserve the lavish praise it got for instsnce.

The Dark Knight.
It's fine but I don't agree with it being elevated over all the other films of its type (#4 on IMDB?!). Personally have a softer spot for Batman Begins.

Agree about The Revenant, even fell asleep halfway through which I don't think I've ever done before.

Maybe it’s because I watched it more than 20 years after its release and plot twists were less frequent back then, but I thought the whole plot twist aspect was stupidly overdone and yet you could see it coming from a mile away. Also Kaizer Söse is such a dumb name in my opinion. Just sound really stupid.

I’ve just watched The Shining for the first time and what a crock of absolute shite.

The woman who plays jack nicholsons wife is comically bad.

Maybe I’m 40 years too late to the party, but my god what a disappointment. Only watched it as my Mrs wants to watch Dr Sleep on Sky Cinema and said I’d need to see this first.
I thought Doctor Sleep was pretty shite.

Some films I find overrated (and I apologize in advance):

Star Wars franchise
Any Christopher Nolan film after Dark Knight
2001: A Space Odyssey
The original Blade Runner
Joker

Isn’t that just standard for any Tarantino film?

Same. I only watched the original ones about 5 years or so ago though, so I do wonder if it was just an "of its time" kind of movie. By the time I came round to it I'd seen many space movies with aliens and shit all done much better.

I was really surprised by Princess Leah too.. :nervous: given the "princess Leah in the golden bikini" stuff i was expecting better. I think reality of it is because she spent that movie mainly running around with no bra on.
I tried watching them for the first time a few years ago too, didn't last long. Seemed like a massive parody of itself somehow.

As you say, bigger better sci fi films since then make it look like complete trash. The whole fanbase is fecking annoying too.

Looking for the answers...
Some interesting responses - I guess it just shows how subjective it all is.

I love Pulp fiction. I kind of get why some people might feel the way they do re Usual Suspects. It was great first time, but once you know, the magic has totally disappeared.

Never really liked Tarantino. His movies do nothing for me.

I'm born in the fifth of November and never watched V for vendetta.. Was told it was great and a must watch and whatever. Watched it and literally thought it was the most boring obvious movie ever.

Apocalypse now is one that I struggle to fully enjoy, I have seen it a few times and although it has some good moments the ending was very anti climatic. Marlon Brandos character was terrible and the movie drops off a cliff the moment he appears.

I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood recently and that was absolute dogshite. No story to it at all, it was more like a documentary reminiscent of a time from 60 years ago that none of us were actually alive for. Tarantino does a Manson family movie and it turns out to be a story less buddy film about a crap actor and a stuntman who beats up Bruce Lee. Tarantino needs to step it up for his next film as his previous few have been poor.

I agree about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For two hours I was thinking, was is the point in this film. Then it has quite a good and brutal last 15 minutes - but it doesn’t make up for having to watch the rest of the film. I’d watch the ending again, not the utter scrap that comes before.

apocalypse now, I disagree, I think it’s a masterpiece. Love it, it’s best at the cinema - which I presume is true of all films, but it really makes a massive difference. It also depends on which version you watch - although all clearly have Brando in it!

On The Waterfront.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very good film, but the way it’s held up as a Marlon Brando acting masterclass and all the commentary and analysis behind its meaning is just overblown. Had to sit through multiple viewings back in the day for school assignments and I’ve always found the message really shallow (which isn’t a surprise, since it’s just an exercise for self vindication by the director)

Avatar. I actually quite liked it, especially in 3D, but it was hyped up to be something really special and over time has been largely forgotten
agree. 100%. It was a really good experience when it came out, it was one of the first proper 3D films, and was a bit of a novelty. It was the reason it took so much money.

the characters are completely forgettable. As is the story. Don’t get me started on unobtanium...

I think Cameron has seriously misjudged the sequels, there is close to zero demand for them, and I feel they could be mega flops when they eventually come out.

So this is basically just the great films that I happened not to like thread?
These threads are always kinda of shite because rarely does anyone go into any detail as to why they think x movie is rubbish/over hyped.

I think I might be the only person on the caf who liked the Revenant

I adore films portraying that era though, so a bit biased

People talk about The Big Lebowski as if it's on a whole different level of comedy to anything that's ever been made ever. It's just not. It's ok, but nothing more than that.

Cue all the neckbeards responding to this with "Yeah, but that's just like.... your opinion, man." You're not fecking funny either. Feck off.
I'll tell you what I told your father. Get a job sir, the bums will NOT win.

Tarantino films are so good. They try to be different by addressing and changing things like fashion, comedy, the history etc.

To me he is the only director who can make a 'real life Anime film'.

I thought the cinematography in the Revenant was sublime. Acting was good but Di Caprio had better performances than that and yet never picked up an Oscar.

The Irishman. Decent story but overly long with dodgy CGI. De Niro fighting outside the shop was unintentional comedy.
Yeah not the best movie. Terrible cgi and that scene is a meme.

Glad to see Joe Pesci on screen again though.

What’s more, a USA Today Q&A with a pilot posed the question of how far a jetliner could glide if the engine quit at 30,000 feet. While it would vary in the wind, the pilot estimated that it could travel for another 100 miles.
Yeah, the ballpark figure used for glide distance for an airliner is 3 times the altitude, it’s something we use in our scenario training in air traffic for emergencies etc. So, at FL300 we’d anticipate at least 90-100 miles glide.

Nah, Interstellar was phenomenal, as a movie and a cinema experience. I was lucky enough to see the 70mm IMAX version in the BFI and it was amazing.
