Nani's Ridiculous Red Card (not the one vs Real Madrid)

... is one of the stupidest red card I have ever seen. How many times has it happened now? referees having a look at replays to review an incident and still managed to get the decision wrong after watching the close up, slowed down, multiple angle replays multiple times. Even your average football fans could see it even on their TV. He cried and I feel sorry for him because it was such an unfair red card.

Looks like VAR was used in just about the worst way possible there.

The angle shown coupled with stills/slow-mo at the point of impact, after he won the ball fairly, made it look like a completely different challenge.

Just read that it was rescinded after a review panel checked it. This is more a referee issue than a VAR issue, how he can review the same footage and come to a completely different conclusion to an independent panel is shocking, could almost assume some corruption

Sometimes VAR got it wrong.. sometimes it's the ref even with the help of VAR. The former I can understand but the later... as you said it's shocking.

Aside from the magnitude of the respective games, that is an even more disgraceful red card than the Madrid one. At least the Turkish clown had a tiny argument, however ridiculous, as to why that was a red. This ref genuinely deserves a sacking for gross negligence and incompetence in his job. Clearly the US equivalent of the FA believes so as well considering the card was rescinded.

I forced myself to write 4 pages of expletives in class hours after that Madrid match to avoid smashing something up. We were flaying them alive and got done by that shitcnut. (Not that we’d be favourites going up against either Dortmund or Bayern that year, but Madrid had no business being there).

As for this one, it’s probably best that the ref never step foot onto the pitch again, but he will.

It is also a VAR issue because it should never in a million fecking years have been looked at again for serious foul play. The ref saw the tackle and gave a card, and even that was a mistake, but whenever a decision is brought back by VAR it's so obvious the referees are all too spineless to stand by their original decisions. But there's no way someone with a dozen camera angles and slow motion should be looking at that tackle and signalling to the ref to have another look for a possible red card.

See it a lot in the Prem as well, if a decision goes to VAR the referees all look cowed into changing their original decision far more often than not, almost like they're honour bound to justify its existence.

I generally sympathize with referees in times when a tackle looks far worse in slow motion than it actually is as that kind of forces them into a decision but in this case, the slow motion makes it even more obvious that he got the ball as cleanly as possible. Yes there is contact but that is the kind of contact that is expected and accepted in football.

I guess it has something to do with being treated unfairly than the magnitude of the game. Maybe he really wanted to play till the end of season with the club which is refreshing to see, it shows intent.

They shouldn't use VAR like this though if you ask me. However, Nation's league and EL having no VAR has put me definitely in the pro VAR camp. Football without VAR is ridiculous.

that is a possible red card and the ref made the decision he made.

Whether VAR is used correctly is another matter entirely but I’m not shocked by the final decision
