Tell me what it says about me. Give me an in depth opinion based on one line of text in a forum.

I have never drug binged, cheated at work or cheated in my personal life, so am not going to pretend I hold him as some kind of saint because he could kick a football. If however, that is what you hold as an example of a human being, then does that not say a lot about you too?

No one is calling him a paragon of virtue so give it a rest
Such an odd take on it - ain't it?

Most artists (music, literature, film) I like were the opposite of paragons of virtue. And many of them are/were - in fact - terrible people in one sense or another.

If you can't separate the human being from the artist, you're doing it wrong - in my opinion.

In Maradona's case there's also something else to consider: A lot of people in my generation do not mourn the passing of an individual human being (who was flawed in all sorts of ways) - but the passing of a (yes, romanticized - of course! That comes with the territory) figure who represented something far beyond his own person.

Precisely what he represented will be different from one man or woman to the next - but whatever it was (childhood hero worship, the football world of a bygone era, or something else), it's powerful: it means something. Which sums up...football (for a fan): a perfectly irrational devotion to something that is, essentially, a fantasy. A wonderful fantasy, I would add.

Oh grow up. To paraphrase one of your earlier posts:

'The world feels a bit empty today.'

If you are seriously going to get so emotional over somebody who doesn't even know you even exist and most likely didn't spend any time thinking about the day before you died then you need to get a grip on yourself.
By that logic you shouldn't get upset every time United lose a match (assuming you're a United fan). Because, why should you get so upset over a bunch of random men kicking a ball when they most likely dont even know you exist? Am I doing it right?

Exactly - I mean they'd probably walk right past you in the street.

Who was that poster who said he did cocaine in his office?

I bet he could show him a thing or two!
There’s no amount of money I would leave my job for.

I live a 2 minute drive to my office, I have an open bar, I made VP in 2 years with the company, I built my squad by myself with my buddies and good looking girls, I say what I want (no PC shit in my office), I dress how I want and I’ve openly done cocaine in the office.

I make more than enough to live my lifestyle comfortably so I’m never leaving.

As long as he's not hurting anyone then fair play to the guy.

Very well put. What I would like to add is that without that romantic fantasy, as you call it. Life would be dreadful.

Indeed. Unbearable even, some would say. What's the bloody point - if not for a bit of romance?

Quick question for those old enough. What were England’s chances like of winning that WC had they progressed? Being so bitter even after the mans’ death isn’t a good look.
I think they'd have had a good shot at Belgium (no mugs mind) but I'd never have fancied them to beat Germany.

Forster, Briegel, Brehme, Berthold in defence. Good unit.

Matthaus, Rummenigge, Voller

I'd have said the Germans would have beaten that England team 8 times out of 10 imo. Probably on penalties a few times :)

I'm better than Messi (even though I'm not)
Realistically? Slim to nil, I would say.
They weren't even favourites to win that match.

There's a good write-up about what went on in the game here if anyone's interested and it's not pay-walled

The first football match I ever watched in my life, as a 6 year old on a fuzzy colour tv was a game played on a disastrous muddy field between a team in yellow and another team in sky blue.

It was in the Arabian Gulf where my father was posted for work for a period of time, I had no idea what football was, and it was an entirely forgettable serie A game played between a mediocre Lecce side (playing in yellow) who had just been promoted from serie B and would be relegated again that same year, and that Napoli side with their Scudetto-winning years yet to arrive - it was the 1985-86 season, this match being in feb 86.

I assume the only reason why some TV producer thought anyone would be interested in watching that game was because of napoli‘s number 10, in his second season with them and still a year away from winning them their first ever scudetto, but already by some distance the best player in the world and reaching a peak in 86/87 which in my opinion no player before or since has surpassed.

I remember the game vividly, mainly because he was so eye-catching amidst all the drabness around him, but also because it turned me onto a lifetime of interest in football. It’s why I cried a few tears when I heard of his passing. The word genius is overused, but he was a bonafide genius, despite all his flaws.

RIP, el mejor.

Surprisingly good singer.
On his own birthday on his party.
Song is about him, for good measure he leaves out singing his own name. (Edit: At least at the beginning)
From the great Kosturica documentary.

Really? I don't really care about Henry's handball and would never hold one moment like that against when discussing Henry and the joy he brought everyone but it is the very first thing that comes to mind when I see Henry being mentioned and is probably his most famous moment in football, granted infamous.

I see this thread has finally gone the expected way.

My 2p, best player in my lifetime and feel privileged to have watched him live.

That WC remains the best I've seen by some distance. Packed with superb sides sporting some of their countries' best ever players (or thereabouts). Pick any one side and there will be one of their all-time superstars in it. It was mouthwatering stuff, clash of titans... but at the end there was one left comfortably standing head and shoulders over them all. El Diego.

Lived life to the full? I think he threw it all away really. Saw him at parties mid to late 90s a few times, didn't look to me like a happy guy enjoying himself but a downright miserable and tortured soul. Outside a pitch he was lost really.

Shame. We all got far more from him than he ever truly got back and I mourn but also pity him for that.

How do you feel about George Best? Asking out of real interest, so could you please elaborate?

You're the kind of person who's throw a tantrum at a funeral just because you don't like the people who died. Cheap & Classless.

There happy now? Now create your own 'I Hate Diego' thread for your rants.
