This is by far the weirdest thread on Redcafe. Henderson blunder is because of Maguire's pass, like you don't practice that triangle to move the strikers a thousand times per week?

Maguire is the best player in our back 4 irrespective of who starts. I doubt anybody could argue that any of Telles, Shaw, Rojo, Jones, Bailly, Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Fosu-Mensah or Williams are better than him. He's made over 70 appearances for the club in just over a year which has brought another level of consistency to our team and his monstrous aerial ability as well as his composure in carrying the ball out from the back where required has been a joy to watch in recent weeks.

BuT hE gOt PaSsEd bY nEyMaR.
I think Shaw has been better than him over the last year, and I'd say that AWB and Lindelof have been on par with him (damning with faint praise.) And you are seriously saying that any aspect of Maguire's recent play has been a joy to watch? I will give you the consistency part.

Every time you concede from mistakes its a "freak" goal. The rest of the performance is better, thats why its considered a mistake rather than a continuation of the normal ability

Maguire, Henderson and Lindelof all messed up and we conceded 2 goals to the bottom team. Fortunately for them we did enough offensively to score more goals than they ended up doing. Lindelof gets a lot of credit in the first one of those
Maybe I stretched a bit to call both goals "freak goals". The first is a howler imo, and it is ok to concede a few of those every season. Last season we conceded way too many of those however, mostly from DDGs mistakes.
Second is to some extent Lindelof's and Henderson's fault, but also a lot of bad luck. First the corner that never should have been a corner, then Lindelof's clearances bouncing back and in to goal. At the same time both Martial's goal and Rashford's second were also a bit lucky and close to being howlers so I guess it evens out.

Also remember that every time we miss a clear goal chance, it costs us as much as a CB or goal keeper mistake in the box. But rarely we say that a forward had a poor game if he missed 4 sitters but scored 2.

I think he played well and is on a pretty good run of form at the moment. Hopefully his confidence keep rising high and he keeps the ball moving at pace whilst defending classily.

He & Lindelöf are basically undroppable because they are our only center backs that can stay fit for more than 2 games in a row. I'm not a fan of his, but I don't see how you can complain about him playing when we literally have no other option (Tuanzebe is injured again, I think? I'm not even going to go into the Bailly/Jones/Rojo mess).
Didn't realise Axel was injured,if that is the case then like you say we haven't got much choice but to play them

If Lindelof has a decent leap before the header it goes straight over the defender. Alternatively he could head it away from the player. Its just a bad combination of jumping and heading. Obviously he doesnt know it as the cross is coming in but actually as it turns out its a "free" header for him because his opponent misses the ball. He's not getting to it. So as it turns out he just needs to clear it properly and instead he rebounded it off the attacker. McGoldrick had a big leap but ultimately missed the ball, as long as Lindelof doesnt head the ball across his own goal or into him then he's dealt with it. Its also Lindelof's man... So he knows hes in front of him and still heads it against him. Its not like its someone else's man and he doesnt know that if he heads it that direction its going into him

I can be wrong tbf, but he probably would've made the bench if he was alright, we only had Shaw on the bench against Sheffield.

I thought it was Lindelof’s fault, but now when I look at it in replay a few times I couldn’t really blame him. It’s not like Lindelof doesn’t jump high enough, he times the jump well and actually is the only one who hits the ball, everybody else timed their jumps worse and missed. He heads it away from goal and it goes to the neck of McG. 99/100 it’s not a goal but that was that 1/100 and we were lucky it happened in a match where it didn’t matter. It was a very messy situation where 4-5 people tried to head the same ball.

Looking at Ole's presser notes today it sounds like he should be back in the squad on Sunday

I agree with you but the other OP is not looking at the whole picture. Maguire is the captain and hence should be organizing the defence but he didn't. We do zonal marking. This cannot be blamed on Ole. On field situation has to be handled by the players. When they see that Sheffield United has loaded on Deano they should know what is coming. Then when he sees that there are no Sheffield United players on the near post, he should know that there is no near post flick. He should also have seen that most of them were coming for the far post. So why on earth did he not pull back a couple of our players who were in the near post where there was no Sheffield `United players at all? We had 5 players in a. zone where there was no Sheffield United players even close. He was in front of Lindelof and he should have been the one to clear it first. if he judged it right and jumped up he could have easily headed it anywhere he wanted to. Even a back header would have taken it out of the danger zone.
I feel that he is a major problem for us now. Ole cannot play Matic or even any DM alone because of him. Individually he may be an OK player but he is not leader for sure. I think Lindelof and Axel may be a better partnership than these two.

They did, but they missed. And Lindelof headed into the guy in front of goal who leaped highest and missed before him. So if h heads it away from the middle of the goal it would be fine. Or if he had a big leap, like McGoldric did next to him he'd head it over the attacker. Its because he's outjumped by a mile that he cant then head the ball over the attacker

You are right about the organisation. It is often poor at corners imo. Also players get free runs, Telles was pushed away like a fly. Just like you write, if I understand you correctly, it seems they have decided what to do on corners and do t adapt to the sitauation and to where the biggest threats are.

When it comes to Maguire, McGoldrick pushes him down. That makes him jump higher and Maguire is pushed down. I don’t think it would have too unfair if that goal was VARed out even though I personally like that there still is some physical challenges left to exist.

McG climbed on Maguire. That’s how could jump higher than Maguire. Lindelof jumped the height of the ball and that’s of course how he could head it.

He is still struggling to find last seasons form imo.

Plays better when Fred (our only deep lying midfielder with pace) is on the team it seems, which is an indication that he will be way better with a faster ball playing partner in defence.

It is weird that we cant utilize his aerial prowess in set-pieces yet, especially with Bruno and Telles on delivery duties. One area to work tactically. Looking at Zouma this season, that definitely can be improved with a little bit of coaching.

Why wasnt a freekick given then?
You are right. It should have been a free kick and Maguire should have made a stinker about it. But there is mitigating circumstances also. He was backing too. I still think it was that (1) Unlucky and that (2) Maguire should have organized his defence better. To me he is not a top class defender because his lack of pace and his lack of awareness on what goes around him.

I dont think it was a freekick at all. McG just had a better jump than our defenders, but he mistimed it and missed the ball. Danger averted... Only then we headed the ball into him and it flew into the net

Am I the only one who thinks lindelof is the better passer and we should've just found a more defensive cb to pair with lindelof for like half the price as Maguire? Idk too me not really overly impressed with Maguire and think he's just a slower bigger version of lindelof.

I thought he was fine last night. So was Lindelof.

They scored from a once a season (hopefully!) error from Henderson and got their second, very fortunately, from a set-piece which again Henderson should be collecting 4 yards from goal... or at least impacting.
Yes, but that's being logical. And if TheCaf has taught me anything there is no such thing as logic when it comes to scapegoating Maguire...

Lindelof has better passing ability but he doesn’t do it often compared to Maguire. Maguire made more progressive and long ball.

So what about Pogba then? £90 million 4 years ago. FIVE seasons later you can count the number of good games he's had on one hand! The player has also been pining to leave since summer 2019. An ok game against the 'worst team in PL history' and fans getting hyped again.

The agenda against Maguire by deluded haters is just typical

Like i said i bet they're deluded Pogba or even Eric Bailly fanboys!
Pogba is a world class footballer. A key player in the current World Cup winning squad! Whether hes playing well for us or not is a different matter. On the other hand, no one outside England know who Maguire is. Well maybe everyone except Greece.

3/10 is nonense. Every time he receives that ball like that. He should be taking it on his back foot (left foot) to open up his options. He has plenty of time to do this and play it out left to Telles. Because his body shape is wrong, he can't, his only options are to play it right back into the middle where the space has been condensed or try and swing one over to Lindelof or AWB at right back. Both risky passes too. He chooses the keeper.

Henderson does the same when he receives the ball, he's not in a position to open out and play it right, so his touch allows the opponent in to close down the touch.

Maguire puts his team and goalkeeper under unnecessary pressure becasue of bad positioning control and passing and rightly should share equal blame for the goal.
Give it a watch again, then give it another watch and then another. Maybe then you will realise that Maguire is not to blame for that situation. He opted for an easier pass in that situation while other moves were too risky. Maybe next time he decides to take another touch but with a pressing player from behind clos to 6 yard box. there is nothing wrong with back pass. Ball moves faster and there is plenty of time to play it around the attacker and quickly build the attack.

BTW, this is all if he and if that, he's got split second to decide and unfortunately Henderson had a shocker there. Happens. But we will learn. At least this is one aspect of our game we can see, which is improving under Ole. Practice makes perfect.

BTW, when I watch games Maguire is one of the most press resistant and bravest CBs in the league and makes very few mistakes as well, so I am not sure why we should criticise him for one easier back pass to our goalie who should have done better.

Only needed to watch it once to realise he should take it on the half turn and play it out left to Telles. It really is that simple.

That ball should never come back inside to the condensed space, not to goalkeeper and especially not into the six yard box right in front of the goal.

Watch it below, Telles even drops back in expectation of the pass, Maguire's body should be angled more so that he can turn out left, he is straight on, so his touch and pass go straight back where it came from. He should receive it on his left and play it out wide with his right. Henderson, should be more open to tuning out right, he's not so his touch leaves him short and allows the oncoming player to get there. Both players body positions are wrong, so the touch is wrong and both led to mistakes. Both are equally at fault

gif

If Maguire wasn't such a right footed player could have easily avoided this. He stops the ball with his left foot and has vision on the left side

Matic was already pointing to Maguire to move it out. He was too close to Hendo and yes Hendo also messed it up but to me Maguire as the senior player and captain should have taken charge of the situation and not put Hendo under such pressure. Lindelof was in the correct position. If Maguire had let the ball run across his body he had all the options available to him.
But we should stop this playing from the back 100% of the time. Yes when the opportunity is available then play by all means.

1) Pretty sure most football pundits and people regard Pogba as world class.

2) Surely you cant call someone a fanboy with the way you defend Arry

3) I dont think I can think of one game where Maguire justified the 80 million price tag

Maguire has been at the club for over A YEAR and has established himself as our best centre back at the club. Apart from the dogshit performances at the beggining of this season overall he has been consistently solid at the back for us.

Pogba on the other hand (the clubs record signing at £90 million) has been at the club for FIVE seasons. You can count the number of good games he's had on one hand. For a so-called 'world class player' that is not good enough.

Has he justified his 90 million price? I think not

I think everyone can agree he has been a flop of a signing.

I'm just telling it how it is.

no one considers Pogba to be World Class.

we dont need to go to the extreme and say he’s championship level.

is Pogba one of the best midfielders in the world? Had he ever been one of the best midfielders on the world?

no.

we bought potential from Juventus. He’s never fulfilled that. Doesn’t mean he can’t be an excellent player, but I don’t think he will ever be world class.

The hindsight stuff is funny though, like how he “should have passed to Telles” because Hendo fecked up.
These are pro footballers man, they play these triangles in much smaller areas literally 100’s of times a week.
It was a shocking mistake from the keeper, I doubt he’ll do it again.

Right. It was a routine pass from Maguire, and Henderson had 1001 ways to NOT passing it to opponent striker.

This. He needs to develop that awareness. The space and less danger is on our left with the left back and passing options down rhe pitch.

This rodeo him and Lindelof do to move the opposition by passing it 50 times, needs to go and this is symptomatic of when it goes horrfivally wrong. Play it simple away from the goal.

I really wish we had someone like `Fellaini and he will kill all these pressing on our defence. ~One long ball onto his chest and their press is bypassed. Just like we did to Ajax in the EL Final.

You can be ignorant to the basics all you want, but the simple fact is that the goal came from poor technique and awareness from Maguire and poor technique and awareness from Henderson.

I was watching Newcastle last night. Amazingly, Ciaran Clarke, who the last time I checked wasn't an 80m defender, was able to do this over and over again in 2 or 3 touches. Received the ball and turned out to his full back, even more amazing was that Isaac Hayden was able to do it also.

Maguire's problem is that he lacks football intelligence. When he is allowed to play the physical CB who's only responsibility is to clear the ball he is fantastic.
But for some reason Ole made him captain.
I think Maguire could be consistently great for us if the captaincy is moved to someone else and he is allowed to focus on his strengths.
