I wouldn’t say they are favoured. NV, NH, AZ and GA are all tough turf to defend unless you get a big turnout (D+6 and above). Meanwhile, FL, PA, NC, WI are tough seats to go after, even if they are battleground states, especially with population trend. In WI for instance, Tony Evers won with sth like 20k vote in 2018 in a D+9 national environment.

It’s a slightly lean GOP map imo. Of course things are subjected to changes, but looking at past D midterm performances they don’t exactly fill you with confidence.

GOP is a Trump party now.

With no Trump on the ballot, how many Trumpers are going to show up in the midterms

I now believe there is a slight chance of civil war in America. Very unlikely but it's not impossible.

I find this really cringy to be honest. Why does Americans keep spouting this "greatest country in the world" when its pretty far from it.

Think i can name about 30 countries i'd much rather live in than the US
They are indoctrinated into this thinking from birth. You could pay me £1 million and I wouldn't live in that place.

When you end up on the winning side in two world wars, you have the opportunity to paint your own history.

Eh? they’ve literally just lost both. How on Earth are they ”poised” to win them?
Because incumbent party does badly in midterms, and D holds the slimmest House majority they’ve had since WW2, and a tied Senate, which means even marginal losses can swing control of both chambers.

The American public also have the memory of goldfish. Dubya now has a positive favourability rating after dragging them into 2 wars, bungled a disaster response and presided over the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. You are telling me that that bunch will care at all about Trump’s antics 12 months from now? That they won’t be gagging for his tax cuts again in 4 years after the Biden administration predictably does the square root of feck all to address inequalities in their country?

I wonder how many of those in the mob had Covid-19. I saw that for example one guy bled at Pelosis desk. Guess they have to sanitize the whole building now.

They'll have to do a lot more than sanitize. Wonder how many operatives were able to plant bugs and the sort across the Capitol building

There's no way he could be prosecuted in a court of law. A group of violent people did not back off and kept attempting to literally break into the room himself and others were in. Hugely outnumbered and can easily be said by his defence team, fearing for their lives.

he will never get prosecuted because murdering cops almost never get prosecuted but he killed a woman by shooting into a crowd of people including other police officers. he could have pushed her back, he could have left the area, he could have fired a warning shot. the cop murdered her.

Oh I totally agree, I'm just saying even if he was a civilian there's minimal chance of him serving time for that, given the video evidence.

Too bad those neckbeards weren't doctors

I'm not sure leaving the area when the area is the senate being invaded during a vote was an option. None of us know the full circumstances at the moment so labelling it as murder seems more than a little OTT until we do.

Most depressing thing is the amount of people who are cheering because of political disagreements.

A couple of Caf posters are happy about this and support the cop in this case.

What do you reckon the chance you’d kill someone would be if you shoot straight into a gaggle from close distance?

It was utter brain dead to fire that shot. That woman was a MAGA idiot but she didn’t deserve to die that way, no one does.
Explained a few posts above.

We can quibble about word usage but the video speaks loud and clear. The other cops managed not to shoot anyone there.

Does anyone feel somewhat sorry for these right-wing nutters..

They presumably truly believe that the election was stolen. That democracy is being destroyed.

If you believe that you might be doing the same.

The existence of idiots on the right cannot be helped. In the internet age, how do we stop this happening every 4 years?
Yes, i kinda do. They live in a bubble of disinformation and they really believe they are the heroes here, which is a bit sad. The problem is you can stop it without massively intrusive rules in both free speech and on the internet

The only solution is proper education. These people are not equipped to handle the propaganda thrown at them and once they get nudged into the right wing conspiracy bubble they cant get out

I generally agree, but I would say that that officer probably didn’t have all the information we could see on TV and so without that information and not knowing what was happening, it’s understandable slightly that he may have panicked. It’s in the Capitol, and the situation vey unique, after all.

Like I said, I agree that in hindsight it’s easy to see that he should and could have acted differently, but also it’s possible to understand the panic.

Maybe, maybe not. Probably amazing the cops didn't shoot more people and instead ceded the senate to terrorists engaged in insurrection.

MAGA idiots were invading the senate but if it had been radical Muslim idiots I wonder if the reaction would be same or if we would rightly call them terrorists?. Happy more didn't die but anyone invading a parliament to try to stop a democratic vote being enacted shouldn't he surprised if they end up dead.

What is actually hysterical (apart from a woman being shot and maybe losing her life) is that this is all a bunch of Trump's pussies can manage. Trump directs them down Pennsylvania Avenue and they take a stroll, have a personal tour around the building, sit behind Nancy's desk, get selfies and then walk off before anyone cross can turn up.

More of a Damp Squib (Squid probably) than a Mob.

Pathetic.
Just catching up with this thread. That Nancy desk thing is going to be the origin of conspiracy theories for years to come. Fake emails, fake files, fake USBs, fake deals, etc.

I can’t put to words how irrationally mad I get every time I see that flag in the Capitol
I put this on yesterday when I was building Lego crap with my youngest and upper middle kiddo. She asked what the flag was. Explaining to an eleven year old what that flag is and what it represented and seeing the look of confusion and horror on her face wasn't the best way to spend a Tuesday evening just before bedtime.

They shouldn’t be surprised if they end up jailed. You are enabling police’s racist and trigger happy behaviour by rationalizing it the way you did above.

Lucky for the US that it was some wacky fur draped preppers that breached worringly lax security here. If it was Islamic terrorists or a lone wolf machine gun toting far right looney things would have been a hell of a lot worse.

That looks really bad, hard to see how that could possibly have been justified.
Because they've barricaded the door, probably have elected officials on the other side, and she's climbing through with unknown contents in a bag after being told repeatedly to stay back?

It's sad she's dead. I'm not going to celebrate someone dying. But those officers/agents were doing their job.

The whole thing is a bloody mess, though.

So what was the plan? Storm the Capitol building and run around like a bunch of drunken frat boys?

I have as much sympathy for that stupid cow as those feckers showed for Heather Heyer.

Agreed. They’d already broken through barrier after barrier.

They had guns pointed at them, yet refused to stop. Explosive devices were found on site, so it’s a good point actually about the bag.
