Never thought I’d say that after losing to City but I’ll take that defeat.

I’m looking at the opposition. City were fired up last night. A different team with a totally different approach in comparison to the team we played in the PL the other week.

Going on the performance and the level of opposition, it amazes me how we resort to slagging off our players. Ffs we’ve played far worse than that and won games before.

A reality check, nothing more and time to kick on!

Unless it's the final, or we totally disgrace ourselves, I'll never really be that bent out of shape when we lose in the League Cup

Bit annoying but City are a good side and we weren't terrible... so meh, move on.

Never like losing a game, but there is a modicum of comfort to be had in the knowledge that we were beaten by a better team.

It gives us an idea of where we're at and where we need to be.

I am not bothered but isn't that just accepting we are shit/not good enough? Shouldn't we as fans, especially of our club, not expect us to be equally as fired up? Should we not be annoyed that it's so easy just to accept they are better than us?

I am not bothered as football has lost a lot of appeal for me in the last few years as other things became more important. But it does slightly bother me how at ease I am with just shrugging it off that City and co are better

It only makes you wish that we lost against Brighton or someone in the previous rounds. What was the point of going away and winning and Everton, playing our full strength team to go out so meekly?

Not close to being as upset as was a month back for UCL. But a defeat is always a negative.

Im not upset about that defeat . I think its clear for anybody that understands football to see that we are improving , It will take time but for me this is the best we have looked in Quite some time. City are a very good team and played very well last night. For me there are signs That the Giant is waking from its slumber. I personally will be happy if we can keep improving this season make Summer Signings that will bring us to the next Level this summer ( Sancho , Grealish etc .) And Go full tilt after the league next year .

Yeah agree with the OP. We put in a decent performance but the forwards let us down on the night somewhat, on the other hand City took their chances in what was a relatively close game.

No need to jump on the manager or players backs over this one. We are doing well in the league, have a big two games coming up, hopefully the negative impact of losing yesterday doesn't affect the team and they use it to refocus and go again.

The better team won on the night but it's not like we were outclassed by them, another day we win that game. It confirmed what I already know, we are a good side but have room to improve in many respects, certainly no reason to slag our players off en masse and think we are shit.

That isn't even a good team, they struggled to score from open play as much as we did and de Bruyne had as poor a game as Bruno. What infuriates me is losing two set piece goals to a team of midgets when man for man we had the height advantage over them. They wanted the cup more and I care less because its the league cup. Just wish we'd set up with more reserve players getting minutes as they would have been hungrier to put in a performance.

It was a reality check some parts of the fan base needed. Talk of title challenges is way ahead of where we are at the moment regardless of what the table looks like

We're still a work in progress and I'm fine with that

Not particularly devastated as the season isn't over. They have a better team and manager but if june comes and we end the season without winning anything, again, this one will sting in hindsight. We need to start winning again and next season is never guaranteed for trophies. The cup failures take a toll because of how close we keep coming short

I didn't think we'd win, I was more hopeful than anything. We didn't get outclassed, we got done by a couple of daft goals, while annoying, it could have gone different on another night. We also just didn't really perform that well in general. We've got plenty of other big games to focus on in the next few weeks anyway.

That's where we don't agree and why I can take the defeat. They win on quality. Not attitude or effort. Hard maybe for some of us to accept but true!

With the schedule of a game every 3 days I was indifferent about the league cup but it does seem a total waste to play a semi final so timidly. Overall I'm not that bothered but I'm also not convinced we've really moved up a level to challenge for the league yet.

These draws in recent years have been the worst, so many easy ties in the early stages where it's almost impossible for any team we put out to lose only to get done in a SF

I'd much rather play Liverpool away in the first round, put out a second string team and lose than have all the extra games and lose to the first good team we meet in a SF

Obviously the ideal route to the final is the one Spurs have just had for example, pretty much a free hit at a trophy

I’m gutted to be honest, felt it was a good chance to put a marker against City for the title race and confidence, but we didn’t trouble them and felt like they could either have kept the ball and passed us off at the end or do what they did and just sit deep.

Bit of a reality check, however, if we beat Burnley next week then I’ll feel a lot better, we need to make sure we don’t go on one of those dire runs now.

It's called perspective, City played as well as I've seen them for a long time. The game could have gone either way but we gave them a good game which we haven't at times since Pep's been there.

At City Pep is given anything and everything he wants, at United Ole has to contend with the buffoonery of Woodward on a regular basis.

It's also a great night for the moaners who've had to keep it bottled up since the CL exit.

Not overly disappointed as the better team won on the night. I still think we're a fair few levels below City in certain area's of the pitch.

The squad is in need of more experience, quality and freshness but I dont expect that to happen in the upcoming window.

I’m still kinda down because I thought we’d give a better account of ourselves, but I just hope our league form doesn’t dip as a result.

I just think it's pure arrogance when our fans are saying it's only the League Cup so they're not bothered... and the only trophies that matter are the Premier League and the European Cup.

At the end of the day it's a trophy, and all trophies count.

I’m never ok losing to those plastics

It’s made a little disappointing as there was so much of ‘ what could have been about it’ If we were so comprehensively dominated, I could understand but we had opportunities to create and opportunities to defend two regulation clearances

In all honesty losing either in the first round or losing in the finals of a cup competition and the result in the end is the same. You can look at it in any way you like but if 100 teams enter a cup competition, 99 of them will eventually fail, so winning a cup is statistically very hard. Its not defeatist behavior rather just taking things as they are and moving on.

We weren’t bad and got ousted by a better team on the night, I feel quite fine especially since the finals are on a later date then usual so it won’t have the same impact as it usually does.

Standards have dropped so low that we are happy when we lose now? to City? Regardless of the situation or circumstances we should never be happy in a loss

No. Feeling annoyed as our coaching staff simply gave up, not even trying to change the game by making subs is unacceptable.

True, I agree with this. If we'd been slaughtered and outclassed fair enough. But for however much I still think City are a few levels ahead of us, that game was there to be won last night, and we didn't deliver, we never looked all that likely of delivering. We lost due to a couple of sloppy goals, but I feel like if City had needed to turn it on, they could have. When we needed to turn it on, we couldn't even start the engine.

That's exactly it.

I said it last night as well, but the result and performance reminded me of the Chelsea away match in 2006 where a similarly bright Utd side had recently emerged and looked like they could be on a run after having a dismal first 6 months of being knocked out in the CL group stages for the first time and generally looking hopeless - culminating in an embarrassing 4-1 loss at Middlesborough. We gathered ourselves and Fergie made the decision to drop RVN for Saha and build around Ronaldo + Rooney. We were on a roll and won the League Cup and decidedly beating Arsenal a month or so later. The title was still very much in Chelsea's hands but a win at Stamford Bridge would have been the perfect possible mark of our progress.

As it was, we were easily outmatched by Chelsea and we lost 3-0. That young team learned from its mistakes, and my hope and aspiration is that this team will learn from theirs too.

Absolutely fecking gutted. Played better against them away in the second leg last year and at home in the league soon after.

Anyone who thinks we can now focus on a title chase needs a reality check. We’re a long way off one, and now look unable to do anything against the sides we will need to beat to win the cups.

We went out with a whimper, City are playing well, but nothing like level they were at a couple of seasons ago. Everyone should be disappointed with result and performance.

It's something I can move on easily since we are still on title race, it's like in Fergie days where okay let's move on and focus to win the league. If we don't beat Burnley & Liverpool then everything will become bitter including yesterday lost.

I accept we were beaten by a better team who just have better players than us , we were up for the game and the effort was good but we just don't have their quality
in depth through our team.

Not the players fault but I will never be ok with us losing , especially a cup semi final against one of our big rivals.

It shows as a club we still have a good bit to go to get back to where the club should be.

I also expect once Liverpool find their form the league that turn again into a two horse race between them and City as we are in reality a good bit behind both still.

I'm annoyed at losing to City, and I really feel like this team needs to win something soon because this will make it 3 years without a trophy, and Ole needs it too.

However, I don't really care about losing this match in general. I'm just hoping we kick on and win something this season. I'm really not expecting much after the summers recruitment.

I feel like it was our best chance at a trophy this season wasted. People can talk down about the league cup, I've always enjoyed it personally, but it would have been great for this side and manager to win something.
