Those who support DDG starting need to remember how good he was at Sheffield last season, look at them without him now... Ole at least needs to rotate them every other game. Henderson deserves the chance to take over.
Yeah, they are shit because Henderson is not there, if he was stll there they will be a Top 4 contender :D

Some really good points here. De Gea was insanely good from 2013-18 and my favourite United player. His unbelievable shot stopping overcame his other deficiencies. Plus, teams weren't getting as far in against us, as they are now, so were shooting more from distance, which was easy for him. It must be difficult for central defenders to have a keeper who stays rooted to his line and doesn't come for crosses. This has always been the case with him, but opposing teams now smell blood and are really targeting his weaknesses. This season has got even worse, going for shots feet first rather than diving to use his hands, with Tuesday's debacle a show of cowardice that I have never seen from a professional keeper, let alone a previously world class one. It's like having an outfield defender on the goal line, rather than a goalkeeper who takes full advantage of the rule which allows him to use his hands. His demise started at the World Cup in 2018 and has continued since. Tuesday night was the final straw for me, and Henderson must be given a proper run of games now, to enable the defence to function better, knowing that they have a good all round goalkeeper behind them. De Gea's demise has been sad to see and we should all be grateful for his unbelievable displays from 2013-18, but his time is now up I'm afraid. This is Ole's Jim Leighton moment.
I agree 100% been saying for a while that he wont come of his line, that creates uncertainty, and our back 4 are having to defend every ball.

Another point to consider is that Romero had a much higher percentage of clean sheets than De Gea had. I know that Romero was generally used for the cups against lesser opponents, but he was also playing behind squad players, rather than the first choice players that De Gea had in front of him.

Said as much a couple of years ago already. We ship an incredible amount of chances created by exploiting these clear exact weaknesses de Gea has. Yes to Henderson.

De Gea's gameplay choices effects the whole of our defensive line.

That's why him leaving will eventually lead to the return of our defensive ability within our club.

That's why I can't wait for his exit. I respect the guy for his time here but sometimes he genuinely feels like he is one of the only goalkeepers who uses their arms as little as they possibly could.
This is what Chelsea fans were saying about Kepa - you can see the calming effect a vocal and proactive keeper can have on a whole defence now that we've got Mendy in goal.

All these talks of footballing triangles and how our defenders are overrated- yet our defenders have hardly ever got to to play with a CDM that plays at the top of a defensive triangle.

CB - CB
CDM
Likewise with our goalkeeper we have a very reflex based goalkeeper who stays on his line and not a goalkeeper who can act as the base of a triangle at the bottom of a pair of defenders. We dont get a triangle acting with our pair of defenders so we hardly ever get this. As simple as it sounds, it's TRUE because de gea is on his line and it shows during corners.

I've seen that some fans seem to think players like Christensen and particularly Zouma may or may not be your long term future CB's. Likewise many here are unsure of Maguire and Lindelof. However, alot of that insecurity comes actually from the fact that we have a Goalkeeper that doesnt bring the best out of our defenders. Now that you have Mendy it should be much easier for you to see who exactly is good enough to be your long term starting CB and this has started to show at Chelsea apparently.

I really hope that stability at GK comes at United soon because once that's there - seeing the dodgy CB's becomes easier to see.

I think you're spot on to also highlight the lack of a proper destroying midfielder - having Kante there for us instead of Jorginho makes a colossal difference in terms of how frequently our CBs are exposed. This is a bit tangential but it's yet another reason why the Matic extension was so absurd - even when he was at his absolute apex at Chelsea, he was never a lone holding midfielder as he just isn't the most mobile. His best performances always came as one part of a double pivot, be that with Lampard, David Luiz, or Kante. You should be doing absolutely everything you can to hijack Chelsea's presumptive move for Declan Rice - yes he's a limited player, but even in the unlikely event he doesn't develop further he'd bring so much needed structure to your midfield.

Totally agreed re: De Gea; one thing about Henderson that I'd be a bit worried about though is whether he's up to stamp his authority on matches - this isn't an indictment of him in particular, but as a young goalkeeper coming into the team he might be hesitant to yell at your captain when it's warranted given his place in the team might be tenuous. I'd think personally that showing strong intent and giving him a vote of confidence via a run of games might help there.

Not sure about throwing Henderson into the derby tomo but would def consider him sooner rather than later, De Gea in the past has been super for us, last 18 months though, he's been a liability.

When a game becomes a must-win, he's a liability - Sevilla game in the round of 16, top 4 race battle, Chelsea semi-final cup, etc. I haven't recalled he didn't make any important saves that would save us from getting knocked out. I think if De Gea played in the Europa league through 2016-17 instead of Romero, we would be knocked out. Has cost us multiplies due to his lack of commanding, dominant in the air, getting off the line, and organizing the defense.

Not to mention that he could not play as 3rd between CB outside the box which could help us to bypass pressing because we would have more man on the ball. Our passing positioning map with GK is non-existent, unlike all other tops teams.

As soon as the pressure is off, De Gea is amazing at saving shots.

but Henderson would definitely have collected it.
You don't know that for sure. Do you?
I am goalkeeper and to make my defenders known my presence I shout when I am going for the ball. I've broken my nose and my fingers in this situation. I don't remember that De Gea have had any injuries when going for a ball into the traffic. (Could be a mental issue, that he dont want to get hurt anymore).

Maybe De Gea made decision not to come for this one and didn't shout (meaning he left it to Maguire deal with). And Maguire should've cleared it. Doesn't mean De Gea wasn't also at fault in this sitution.

I agree the communication problem at the back needs to be dealt with. And De Gea should have more courage to go for the 50/50 balls. Gulácsi went for these balls and even if he didn't get all of them 100% he disturbed our attackers and gave more confidence to his backline.

I would like to see Henderson get some more games, but I don't like that people don't see his mistakes and think he is definately better option(offside goal positioning, giving away a corner when catching simple cross). I hope we will have a great great keeper there, but I wouldn't jump into conclusions yet.

Also when De Gea made couple of great games lately people wrote that "He is back", "De God" is back. And now when he makes a mistake in a 50/50 situation people want to send him away again. It's not that easy.

I love how people are cocksure about what Henderson would do
As the OP, who suggested giving Henderson a run of 10 games, one doesn't really know what will happen - then again, if he doesn't get a run, we won't know either.

Being a pragmatist, I believe that we should try it out and see what happens - the risks of doing so are relatively low this season and we need to know where we stand for the future.

I have more confidence in Ole than some and believe he is aware he has a potential problem - he has dealt with a number of problems since he took over and I am sure he will fix this one when he judges the time is right.

My post was driven by the frustration of DDG's approach (or lack of) to the 3rd goal by RB Leipzieg, coupled with an awarenss that his star has faded significantly in recent years.

I dont get the hesitant nature from both ole and many fans to give Henderson a run of meaningful games in the side, why can't a gk like henderson who has already proved to be a success at premier league level be given the chance when compared to Chelsea putting faith in a relatively unfancied gk from a mid table French league team.

Starts again today. Piss poor performances and cowardice being rewarded with selection again. God help us, how many goals will we have to score to beat City?

Hilarious over reaction. One would think Karius was starting.

Don't know whether this was sarcasm or not but didn't say they'd be a top 4 contender, they just wouldn't be struggling as much as they are this season if they had him still.

I thought he'd returned to form and those silly mistakes were a thing of the past.

Apparently not.

We need a new, reliable keeper.

I genuinely think that even a competent keeper would earn us an extra 10pts a season

Once again, as I have said for two years, De Gea is the worst GK in the league

Not sure what we do with him now, he's on one of those textbook Ed Woodward contracts so it's going to be difficult to find a club that wants to buy the highest paid keeper in the world who won't come off his line, has poor distribution, reflexes that are slightly fading and confidence which is completely shot.

Why the feck does he play every game? Henderson is a better keeper. Give him a consistent run of games and he'll show us.

He’s not a decent keeper anymore. Needs replacing. In the last three seasons he has cost us when it’s matters. 5 points lost in the last 3 games because of him.

I love him.

But he needs a challenge.
I was under the impression he rose up to it, but todays game proved me otherwise.

Get Henderson on the goal, see if he takes the chance.

Ole needs to be ruthless.

He's doing the right thing with Martial, and Cavani and Greenwood were good today, he needs to do the same thing with GK's.

Freeze one out after a couple of blunders.

Winning is what we want. Show it.

He cost us tonight simple as. We either have to give Henderson a run if we think he’s good enough or look to replace De Gea in the summer, he’s costing us to many games at this point.

De Gea might not be as good as he was 3-4 years ago BUT he was fundamentally not at fault today. Having such a shaky pair of CBs affects any GK. He just becomes anxious with the chuckle brothers v2.0 ahead of him.

As for Henderson, we saw how good he was when he fecked up that goal against Sheffield earlier in the season. It's our defense as a whole that's the problem.

Last time Hendo played in a game that mattered he looked very suspect so those saying he’s better than DDG have a very short memory.

Dave cost us tonight, no denying it but let’s not rewrite history.
