Still people are missing the point. Whether or not the FA find this offence doesn’t count, United fans do. Again the odds of the construction of his tweet ‘coincidentally’ posted on the 6th and featuring those emojis are huge. Only the Sun reported it. No comment on SKY who are all up City’s arse for the freebies they get at the Emptyhad nor the useless MOTD lot. If that had been a post on 16th April (Hillsborough) feck me it would be all over the shop. Plus it makes the FA look even more one sided than usual. Rooney is still the only player I know off that was banned for a match for swearing in TV. If you believe the tweet was innocent, you are mistaken.

But who cares if some United fans are upset? Being offended for ridiculous reasons should not be worth anything to the FA, and they already dropped the ball this season.

As silly as the Cavani ban was, and it was really dumb, this one would be even worse. So no one can use certain emojis on that day? :houllier:

Again, if you really think a footballer player, no matter where he's from, would throw a cryptic emoji-filled post as a way to mock fellow professional footballers who lost their lives, then you're absolutely bat-shit insane.

How the feck did he escape this?

Massive ABU agenda which goes right to the top given what happened to Cavani

Ah yeah, it's the evil, die-hard City fan who manages his social media who decided to mock a tragedy because who cares about human decency, right? Much more sane.

Don’t know, but you seem to be mocking people for believing a player would send that when it probably wasn’t even the player anyway. Bit daft

There's a separate thread for the victims and the condolences etc.

Get out of here with that shit
can only post 3 a day hence not replying earlier, and to be honest I didn’t explain myself well and you have a point! I think that the point I was making (badly apparently) was that the focus of so many poster felt a bit like a witch hunt, regardless of whatever the reality turns out to be. An undercurrent of desperation by some to make sure that this is viewed in the worst possible light with the aim that someone is punished as harshly as possible and at at all costs. For me that didn’t really sit well with the seriousness of the tragedy in Munich.

You’ve taken an unusual stance here...are you saying it’s insane for a United fan to think that someone associated with city might want to mock our club on the anniversary of the Munich disaster?

If so, why? Do you think that there aren’t d!ck heads out that that would take pleasure in winding United fans up on such an emotional day? I like to try and find the best in people but I’ve met some tool bags over the years to know that not everyone is sweetness and light unfortunately.

Couple the above with the EXTREME coincidence of a very particular set of emojis along with the date they were posted...I couldn’t come up with a good reason for a footballer (or media “helper”) to post an explosion next to a plane next to a laughing face (not to mention the mock airplane photo) on a day when your nearest footballing rival is commemorating the many lost lives in a plane crash...

It seems an absolutely wild coincidence that he would post that on the very day.

I also can't seriously believe that Fernandinho, who after all is not British, not a City fan, and has never expressed any particular beef with United other than that he plays for our rivals, would do something so stupid and potentially punishable.

Only reasonable explanation is that some City social media hireling felt brave and clever and thought he'd get away with it. It's not outside the realm of possibility. There are City fans who mock Munich, just as there are Liverpool fans who do, and United fans who mock Hillsborough. It's disgusting but undeniably these people exist. Some underpaid prick who's spent too long in a circle of friends who include this stuff in acceptable 'football banter' thought he'd do something to impress his mates.

Yet another example of why footballers + social media is an often dangerous combination. It’s the kind of throwaway comment that’d get you glassed in the wrong pub.

There was a picture of him scoring a goal earlier in this thread. Three emojis there as well, one of them a bullseye.

What do you reckon the chances for that are? I mean the chances of his account posting those exact emojis in that exact order on that exact date. Of course giving an exact answer is impossible, but maybe a ballpark one.

I'll be honest, all this talk about probability reminds me of how people will react to 10 heads in a row when you flip a coin, even though every possible sequence is just as unlikely. Is HHTHTTTHTH an indication of cheating?

1. It could easily be a coincidence
2. It's not racist, so intention matters more.

Personally I think the plane would come before the explosion in the emoji order if it really were a Munich reference. But he was right to delete it once the possible offence was pointed out.

Why don't you ask yourself - is there really such an underlying United conspiracy that Sky and BBC saw this as a deliberately offensive post but thought "feck it, it's United, we hate them & they deserve it" or just maybe, all these media outlets thought that it was just a really unfortunately timed post from his social media team and accepted it was a mistake? Have you asked yourself why it's only the S*n reporting on this (feck me, is that even a good thing) and not other all the other mainstream press? Have you considered why it's only United fans being outraged by it and no-one else? Does nobody else care about mocking the dead?

Stop playing the victim. If hypothetically, the disaster happened to City and a United player did the equivilant of what Fernandinho did, would you be outraged by it? You wouldn't.

This strikes me as a deliberately obtuse answer. If the darts tweet had been posted on the same date as the World Darts Final, would you say it was likely to be a reference to that or would you have just thought “oh what a bizarre coincidence”?

We're not making a probability calculation here, because he isn't randomly selecting emojis like flipping coins.

It is extremely unlikely that a footballer or football club employee, aware of the anniversary of the Munich air disaster as either would certainly be, would choose to use explosion and plane emojis in a post on that anniversary without understanding the implications of that.

I've gone back through his instagram posts and cannot find a single other instance of either emoji.

Tell me again, do you think it's a coincidence?

The chances of him randomly posting a series of emojis on the anniversary of Munich are 1/365.

However, the question of whether he (or whoever posted it) meant it to refer to Munich is not a probability question. Only they can know for definite. All we can do is assess how likely it is that a post with a plane, football, explosion and laughter was intended to be unconnected. As I’ve said above, I’m just about prepared to accept it probably is an astounding coincidence in this case. I certainly feel it warrants at least a cursory review by the FA though.

Yes.

The only way I will concede otherwise is if that picture of him celebrating like a plane was hand picked from a training session that was not within the last week, i.e. if his social media team found that pic from September and used it on the 6th Feb then it would certianly imply it was intentional. Otherwise, it's just one of those unfortunately timed posts. If it was Joey Barton during his City days who posted it then I'd agree with you, because he has a history of being a twat and it would be in character.

Exactly. Personally I don't need to see anyone punished, although if some social media person posted it they should be sacked. But the total silence from the FA is gross hypocrisy given the Cavani punishment.

I'm not replying to disagree (or agree) with your comment.. everyone has an opinion.

I think there are two things here...

(1) people who think it was deliberate (and if it was proven to be so, everyone would want some form of punishment?)

(2) the FA setting a precedent that they'll investigate social media posts and make their own decision on whether it brings the game into disrepute. On top of that, saying that an innocent act is not an excuse.

It's this bit that other people maybe have an issue with... the FA deciding which social media posts that upset people are acceptable and which aren't?

I don't think they can/should be the arbiter's. If they've decided they're policing social media (and off topic, having a dig at United as not educating their players correctly), then so be it. As long as they don't say "THAT time, regardless of language experts/a continent, we think it's punishable but THIS time, we think it was innocent"

Putting the two topics to one side for a moment (racism and Munich - I'm not comparing), a lot of people at the time that Cavani's post was high profile, said they begrudgingly accepted that the FA rules covered 'comments that could be deemed to bring the game into disrepute' but it was setting a minefield of a precedent. They had no proof for racism for Cavani and they have (as far as we're aware) no proof that Fernandinho tweet was related to Munich.

One of my United supporting mates thinks Fernandinho (or his social media team) did it deliberately and he should be banned/sacked... another thinks it was possibly a coincidence but given the FA said potential disrepute was a factor regardless of intent, he should be banned regardless.

(btw, the FA accepted that Cavani's comment "was not designed or intended to be racist or offensive". But still added the racist comment charge to the disrepute charge.)

You're right, it's rare & this is the first time it's happened. In the last 10 years of social media, no high profile player has openly mocked Hillsborough, Munich, Istanbul stabbings, etc.

If Eric Laporte posts a pic celebrating like an airplane on the 6th Feb 2022 then we can clearly see something is going on here. If it doesn't happen again for 364 years then we can agree it's just an unfortunately timed coincidence.

I can see that there is another possibility - a representative of a football club posted pictures on social media of aeroplanes exploding and laughing faces at the same time as his arch rivals were publicly commiserating the anniversary of a famous air disaster that claimed the lives of their players and staff - and this was purely coincidental.

That explanation stretches credulity.
He didn't post pictures of aeroplanes exploding.
In his previous tweet he also posted bang/explosion emoji and a ball (I think after scoring against United).

*"Aeroplanes and explosions", then.

Its a distinction without a difference in this context as far as I'm concerned.

For what it's worth, the few City fans I have spoken to about this think that it's hilarious and that Fernandinho (or whoever runs his social media accounts) is a "legend" for doing this and being able to get away with it.

The explosion symbol then aeroplane is exactly how trolls post their munich slander.
Indeed.

Lads, what more likely?

He scored a bullet header in training and did a celebration, got a picture taken and someone uploaded it without realizing how some loons would interpret it online.

OR

he and his social media team, FOR A LAUGH, decided, ha! Let’s mock the Munich air disaster of 1958 and really stick to United fans!!! That would be great!

Please, get a grip. This is embarrassing.
It’s a pretty insane coincidence though. Don’t think I’ve seen a player do an airplane celebration for two decades, much less tweet the airplane emoji like this. It’s just a bizarre thing to tweet full stop, let alone on Feb 6th. Could have done the tweet without the explosion too. There’s an awful lot of coincidences here. An incredible amount, in fact.

I think what’s more likely is that someone at Man City runs his social media and decided to do it for a craic to see if anyone would notice.
Ah yeah, it's the evil, die-hard City fan who manages his social media who decided to mock a tragedy because who cares about human decency, right? Much more sane.

Those of you who think this is some City social media PR stunt, you are aware that City lost a club legend in the Munich air crash... right? and that they might not be so keen to denigrate one of their own in this manner. just a thought.

No-one thinks it was a PR stunt.

No-one thinks it was "City".

Yes, we know about Frank Swift, as do most City fans.

Yeah you're right. The media is against us and no one else. The same way that Liverpool, City, Arsenal & Chelsea fans think the exact same.

Or maybe this has not been picked up because it's such a non-issue, and only bias United fans determined to find an agena are seeing it any other way?
Its not a question of being 'against us' (United) or whether in this instance an offence was meant or not, I am simply making the point that because of United's world wide exposure in the media, every item no matter what its real value, is hyped up and where there is a mention of United, it is snapped up by certain sections in the media.

Liverpool are the other UK club that probably gets similar attention, probably Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain also get the media 'hits' because in that country these are the most successful teams with unique profiles. Arsenal (with their FA Cup record) might just sneak into that category, but Chelsea and Man City although more recently successful, in the UK don't have the pedigree status...as yet!

You are judging the probability of something.

It's absolutely absurd that you believe Fernandinho would be aware of the anniversary of Munich. The only reason he would be aware of it is if someone specifically told him, and why would you expect that? If he knew about then of course he would likely understand the implications of it, but why on earth would he? I think it's much more probable that he doesn't know about Munich at all than he knowing the anniversary date, and I'm 99+ % sure that he knows about Munich.

When you went through his instagram posts, did you find another instance of the bullseye emoji?

And yes, I think it's a coincidence.

Edit: I found another plane, just a different model.

It‘s not “City”, just some young punk that’s on their social media team. Kid probably hasn’t even heard of Frank Swift.
