Funny thing is, no one expected us to be challenging for the title this time last year.

We get a sniff of top of the league and then we have a couple disappointing results & we're back to Ole bashing.

It's almost as if you believed your own hype, that you said that you didn't want to do and then you're getting disappointed for over-achieving. Something you said originally you weren't going to do, because 'we aren't ready yet' (because we aren't)

Most of this forum was happy with a top 3 finish last season going into this one.

NOW You're all unhappy because we're not winning the league (or at least it looks that way)

Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious, this forum never ceases to amaze me. Never happy and never satisfied.
For some maybe but I think a lot of fans thought this season has flattered us to some extent and that our progress this season has been over hyped. I know table doesn’t lie but it also doesn’t finish after 20 odd games so just have to see how rest of season goes.

Let's face it, its not just the results that are poor but the performances too, as a fan you can accept a good performance and still lose, it happens, but to constantly put in crap performances without a real clue on how to break down negative and defensive teams is much more worrying, shows Ole isn't really developing tactically, we are still miles from being considered a top team.

No, it was never about the title. It was about the quality of football and gearing up to what should be a title challenge in the future.

I just don't see it in our football, even - in large part - when we are winning. Of course, there's no point in pointing that out when we are winning because people brush you off.

Freak games happen.

People are upset because we're dropping points and as a result not closing the gap on city.

If you'd had told us the league position we're in now, you'd have bitten their hands off!

We're 2nd! 2nd!

What's so wrong with 2nd?!!!
Come end of the season and we finish 2nd I will complain feck all but there's plenty more games to be played you know and by the looks of it a shite load of points for us to drop. If things don't turn around quick even top 4 might be gone. We have a tough run of games coming up and have put ourselves in a bad position by dropping 5 against bottom of the barrel crap like sheffield and wba.

How does 2nd not prove we're getting somewhere?

If we do indeed finish 2nd, an improvement on last year, how does increasing league positions not show progress?

4th
3rd
and potentially 2nd

Shows that we are and can be challenging for the title

I kept hearing that... From Liverpool fans in the nineties. They always thought that. At that time Paul Ince was considered 'The final piece in the jigsaw'. But they were lacking more than that just like we are.

It looks like City are again raising the bar very high - 95-100 points a season high. So that's the target. It takes something special to be that good. Liverpool were able to, for two seasons. I don't see that special thing in us with this level of coaching.
Yes i can imagine hearing that in five years time having got no closer to challenging for the title

But also shite loads of points of us to gain!

We've always struggled for one reason or another against fodder, we do better against the better teams, so who knows, we may get a kick up the a** that we need and go on another run. Sure that's inconsistent but we're a young team.

That season expectations thread is always a good read.
Well if just a scrap for 4th is the best we could hope for who else did you have ahead of us?
City and Liverpool.

Then a scrap between us, Chelsea and Spurs. Obviously I was wrong about Spurs and Liverpool, and Leicester surprised me.

And that's why there's frustration at this season. Of course I didn't expect a title challenge or even finishing second this season. But because of where we were and how Liverpool have capitulated and how Spurs have massively underachieved, it just felt like an opportunity presented itself this year and we haven't taken it. And we've actually gone to fall off massively (1 win in 5 league games).

You have expectations but you play the season that's there. I don't think anyone would think it's unfair to expect to bet relegation fodder yet we've dropped 5 points against them in the last few weeks. That 5 points is the difference between a serious title challenge and a battle for top 4.

And unfortunately our next 3 he's could quite easily yield 1 or 3 points. Which really puts us into a scrap again.

Literally, every united game after Klopp and Mourinho complaints about VAR favouritism has seen decisions go against us. Ole has not said anything to the several decisions against our team because he is a p***y in all honesty, he has no killer personality. Fans mention that we should not focus on VAR decisions, and more on our performances, but we could have won two of our last three games if VAR decisions went our way.
After final whistle, Ole went to the fecking ref smiling and he bumped fists with him. What a fecking coward.

I wouldnt bank on getting second but even if we do it doesnt mean we have challenged for the title. We cant claim to have challenged for the title when any sensible observer thought it done by the beginning of feb

Last season there were two good teams in the league. This season liverpools form has collapsed so there is only one good team in the league. If we finish nowhere near city on points then thats not much in the way of progress for me even if we finish second due to liverpools collapse.

You was right about the scrap for top 4 unfortunately. Same place I had us. Today isn't good enough but we've also over performed to get to 2nd in the first place.

If you can get Pep to cross the City I'm all for it.

Can't think of a single manager in the world who makes us title winners under Woodward n Glazers. The only two who realistically could manage our two biggest rivals and are off limits to us.

Who else comes in and wins the league? We tried Moyes, LVG m Jose and they didn't get close either. And LVG Jose had pedigree.
I believe there is someone but who that is I have no idea, but I also can’t see logic in just accepting what you have and not trying. I see both sides and don’t see success either way.

Plodding along and finishing top four is all Glazers want so as long as Ole does that he’s safe and never has to do anymore.

Needlessly to say this summer is a crossroads moment and a prime opportunity for the owners to prove they have the ambition to challenge for major honours. 3 or 4 good quality players and all possible starters is what is required. Next season will see a plateau if that summer business isn't done.

Unhappy because we are not winning the league? How about unhappy getting beat against Sheffield at home?
But blaming the manager for individual games is a bit dumb though innit? Managers and really leaders of all kinds reallt gets evaluated from a larger sample size

Unless he names some utterly mental line up its largely up to the players on the pitch to decide the outcome. Just to be clear Ole deserves blame today for picking Martial over Greenwood, but hes not responsible for players shitting the bed vs a bottom team

I see your thread got deleted in the main forum so you are bringing your WUMing into here.
I asked the admin myself to delete the thread and you can ask @Damien about it. You have to learn to respect others opinions. I have the right to write whatever I want here as long I am doing it according to the rules. My post/thread was never personal to any poster here, while you going after every supporter criticizing Ole and you call them Wums is disrespectful.

Yes. The signings need to be starters, not more bench filler, then bring some of the kids to start blooding them.

You must be joking ?

Ole is responsible for how the team is set up, the players looked clueless again and it‘s down to the manager.

we created 0 big chance against the worst defense in the PL

Again if Ole is sacked who would hire him? No PL team would touch him.

The bar is on the floor with our fanbase really

Wait, wait....manager (person who is in charge for team) IS NOT responsible when his team play badly? Ffs, blind love and excuses what he gets here is not normal. Really is not.

The fact that there is always discussions about whether he's good enough, shows he isn't good enough in my opinion.

I've always maintained that he would have positives in his time here but will never build a great side. The most important thing for me is when we eventually replace him, we bring in a manager that is able to take the work he's already done up to an elite level.

I've always been very on the fence when it comes to Ole (even when we've got on a roll) with the odd spell of having enough of his pragmatic/forlorned touch line manner.

I think we can all agree he has brought the team on, maybe not as quickly as we would have all liked, and maybe not with the players we would all like, but that's certainly not all on Ole.

However, what tends to get under my skin is he, much like his side, don't appear to either learn from their mistakes or, react quickly enough or even correctly to the requirements in SOME games.

Take today for example.

It should have been clear for Ole that we were going to dominate possession and come up against a low block.

Yet he chose to play McFred?

Now I don't necessarily have an issue with the personnel, but they were both clearly told to sit in during the first half.

There was then a clear change at H/T, with McT urged to push on and support the attack. My question is, why did it take us 45 minutes to decide that would be more effective? Why can't we tweak that after say 15 minutes, or even better, start on the front foot?

It almost feels like we set up to 'feel the other team out' rather than let them worry about how they are going to nullify us and we are also painfully predicatable in both the way we set up and the way we play.

I mean, there must be a reason I shout "what have we been doing in training all week" at the TV most weekends? There must be.

I still struggle to see a well-rehearsed 'style' of play. It simply smacks of trying to do the basics well and then rely on some individual brilliance?

I don't mind a pragmatic approach against your City's and Liverpool's, but its like its our default, no matter home or away, against City or WBA. I mean, I'm not sure anyone can turn round and say "we were reckless playing one DM away at WBA"?!

He is also very reluctant/laboured when it comes to subs. Slightly better today you could argue but Martial was that bad, he could, maybe even should have been hauled off at H/T.

6/10. I'd love to be proven wrong, but we'll not win a Premier League under Ole.

FFS, so for example when we beat Liverpool in the FA cup or smashed Soton he takes all the credit? Player completely irrelevant? Is that how this works?

For all the adoration Bruno gets and probably enjoys, you wonder if he is going to get fed up being just about the only one contributing consistently with goals in this team.
Can't tell but I personally think Bruno is gone if we don't win by next season. He seems that kind, You can really really tell he hates losing. The people who think he's just going to wait around till we feel we're ready to win the title are in dreamland. The guy seems to feel the frustration of every loss really deep. For Bruno, his window to win seems always open

Currently 12 points better off but given how well we finished last season I’d imagine that’s going to decrease to more like 6 points.

Shows that we are and can be challenging for the title
If City are improving back to the 100-point a season level, and it looks like they are, we are not going to be challenging.

We are second now because Liverpool's standards have dropped. Not because we improved so much we overtook them.

If the idea is to be good and hope others drop to our level, fine. But we should aspire to be as good as the best, and Liverpool have shown in the last two seasons that it is possible. It requires something special, though, like top class coacing.

I wonder whether OGS is our Roy Evans, in that he has reversed a decline from a previous regime, used exciting young talent, fell short at winning when it mattered and the constant tease of ‘next year is our year!’ but it doesn’t happen.

Who said "all" word? It works; manager gets most of blame for bad results and most of praise for good result. Because he is the boss.
But with all of you who defend Ole it goes;
When we are winning; "Ole got us 2nd place"
When we are losing; "Players/Ed/Glazers betrayed him"

Btw against Pool he got his praise for tactics, match preparation, lineup, etc...

Martial gets consistently criticised because he's had all season to play his way into form, but I think you know that. It's obviously not the same situation.
Henderson has been pretty heavily criticised when he’s played as well. I’m not writing him off, but he’s hasn’t made a particularly strong case for himself in a United shirt so far. If he had, he would be playing.

To be fair, I'm one of those not sold on Solskjaer.
In two years, we are still unable to break down the bottom half teams and keep dropping points against them, while creating few chances.

This season, we've had consistent defensive issues that have not been corrected and underperforming players constantly being played ahead of those in form.

On top of that, our coaching staff, with the exception of Mick Phelan have never coached before at first team level, which is ridiculous for a club of Manchester United's stature.

But we are second. Admittedly due to massively underperforming rival teams.

Will wait till the end of the season, but history dictates we'll keep dropping points, because we tend to do the same things on the pitch but accept different results.

Give this team to Allegri and i can bet that in a few months defence would work and that we would be much better than we are now. Not in 2025 like it will be under Ole (as i hear).
Because world class managers do that. They make team better

One thing I can thank Ole for is bringing back the passion.
I'm pissed off after we drop any points now and a part of me is delighted that feeling is back.

Just saying the idea we just need that one or two signings that will make everything right is a comforting thought that is often quite wrong.
