Erik ten Hag - Ajax Manager

FC Hollywood with all the egos and big players could go spectacularly wrong. He'd have to pull the same trick he did at Ajax, give responsibility to the players to keep them at peace while in the meantime really setting the architecture.

I think Ten Hag would be a perfect fit for Barcelona or even City when Guardiola leaves..

As if our board would let him be successful here. It’s beyond just him as a manager.
He'd look completely out of his depth. People need to understand he is doing well over there because they have an amazing structure to work on. Ajax is a great club with an amazing academy and board full of footballing people etc. Our board is the polar opposite.

Correct. Overmars and Van Der Sar have done a lot of work there.

Could you imagine if they had the money we had. They would be at the top of European football. Meanwhile we cant even get into the Champions League. I want my club back.

Erik Ten Hag and Ajax would struggle to replicate this again even if they kept all their players. It will probably be a long time before we see something like this again.

Yes, because they have a system he can slot into.

I don't understand how so many people are blind to this concept.
And honestly the fact that we will probably have a Valverde/Ten Hag manager battle in the CL final we should probably stop this "cult of manager" stuff.

True, and even without it they are currently very close. This whole debate of what manager to bring in is just a pointless repetetive cycle we go through every time we have a bad run. First the club needs to make sure there is a structure in place for the manager to succeed and there's absolutely none of it. Get the lot of them out. Just remember this reply and bump it the same time next year where we will be having the same discussions all over again.

won't be that long, given Ajax' next golden generation will be here in 3/4 seasons ;)

I was laughed at for suggesting Ten Hag when Jose was sacked. I think he's high on a very small list of managers that are coming through at the moment, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Spurs should Pochettino leave in the near future.

It amazes me that Conceição doesn't get a look in. Porto aren't boring to watch under him. They were scoring loads of goals in the CL
Don't wait until he guides them to a cl trophy

The problem is not the managers. Ten Hag would come here and be buried alive.

Is he that great of a manager? Or does Ajax just have a solid structure behind the scenes that enables them to excel at recruitment, coaching, and player development?

Judging by De Boer and Bosz's tenures at Ajax vs their careers after Ajax, I'd say it's probably the latter.

I thought Porto were better than I expected. Their game plan was pretty good. Managed to create a lot more chances against us than most teams. Just lacked the quality and luck to overcome our gameplan. The scorelines told a harsher story of how they played than their performance.

Spot on, he is a very small part of a big structure. Imagine him going to Barcelona like some rumors say, he would get fired before christmas.

Their Ajax teams weren't nearly as successful as his. It's ludicrously to suggest their success is due to the structure rather than him given the football they've played.

No, he was a very big part of the succes this year. Had a rough start of his Ajax carreer, but always stayed calm, didn't say one bad thing about players or the club and just kept on doing what he does. He's the one that made it a real team, with players that fight for eachother and are happy for eachothers succes.

That being said. No, he shouldn't go to a snakepit like United of Barca. If he wants to leave he should go to Germany.

Despite what a lot of Portuguese people will say, and even knowing we are going to steal the title to Porto, Conceição is a very good manager.

Porto squad is very limited and he makes their squad fight for titles. He picked players who were completly crap like Marega or Aboubakar and made them play well. And players like Brahimi who was tottally inconsistent now becomes a threat everytime they have the ball.

They are loosing the title because their squad lacks depth, and they simply didn't had enough quality on the subs to cover the injured and fatigued players, because if they had some lucky with the injuries, they would be celebrating the title by now.

The second reason was that Real Madrid delayed Militão transfer for the end of the season (he was supposed to join them on the winter break) and Porto hired Pepe on a free transfer. That caused the team dynamic to suffer a bit and Conceição got torn between playing Pepe or having to give minutes to a player that is not being valued anymore (Militão).

Their teams didn't have the players Ten Hag has. When De Boer took over at Ajax they were in the midst of a financial and organisational crisis, and were making cuts, had a salary cap of 1 million euros etc. It's a miracle he managed to win the Dutch league 4 times in a row. The team balance was completely off, too reliant on youth alone. The average age was like 21 years old at the end of his reign, the team was hollowed out. After that Ajax slowly became financially more healthy, it's only been the last 3 years that Ajax has started spending more again and signing quality and experienced players like Ziyech, Neres, Tagliafico, Blind and Tadic. Tadic is reported to get at least 3 million euros a year, which was impossible in the years before that. Bosz also left before being able to fully benefit from that, although the first signs of a resurgence were there, the average age that European final was just 22 years old still, it's 24 now.

Don't get me wrong, I really rate Ten Hag as a manager. But the extraordinary season Ajax has had isn't just down to him, it's a result of everything falling into place, including the manager. 7 years of Overmars and Van der Sar getting the club in order, paying off debt, saving money. Reorganising the club aswell, appointing the right people, like new head of scouting Veldmate, he's doing a great job scouting South American players. And the last 2-3 seasons they felt comfortable spending more again, and pushing for results and prizes.

Well said, anyone claiming anything else than this is delusional. You can literally make a ten paragraph post about the factors that contributed to the current Ajax success (from Marc Overmars personally scouting Frenkie de Jong when the latter was 16 to the Ajax academy producing unique players like De Ligt and also Van de Beek, to a player like Blind suddenly and unexpectedly being available to come back, to Ziyech himself 100% expecting to leave last summer but not finding a proper club after a poor World Cup, to his assistent Alfred Schreuder who managed both Tadic and Ziyech before at FC Twente and had a great click with them).

As for Ten Hag, I really hope he stays at Ajax for at least one more year instead of just hopping onto a club where he has no credit. We've seen what happened to Peter Bosz at Dortmund for example, though I guess at least he managed to get a second chance at a respectable club unlike Frank de Boer who lost all credit he built in five years at Ajax within a couple of months at Inter, which was such a stupid and random choice in hindsight and only made worse by going to fecking Crystal Palace after that.

He's a good coach but I don't like the fact that he played Van de Beek as a no 10. If he had replaced Schone with Van de Beek in the midfield at the beginning and had given Schone a minimal role, Ajax probably wouldn't have been out of the CL because Schone was culpable in the mistake that led to the 2nd goal.

No way. VD Beel is the reason Ajax can play with a false nine. They don't have another player who can make those runs.

It's really far fetched to say Van de Beek shouldn't have played on 10 just so that weird scrimmage accident goal with Schone wouldn't have happened. Van de Beek not playing on 10 was never a realistic option, especially not with Neres injured, if Schone hadn't played in midfield Mazraoui would have. Van de Beek playing on 10 made the whole attack click, mad eit possible for Tadic to drop deep and drift and Van de Beek go deep regularly.

It's not just the goal but the fact that Ajax midfield were sluggish with Frenkie and Schone in the midfield. They couldn't contain the mobility of Eriksen and Sissoko in the second half. Schone is a good playmaker but his legs are all but gone and Frenkie has never been a player known for his energetic display. I actually feel the game was lost in the midfield coupled with the inability of Frenkie to mark Alli's runs through the middle.

But as you have just said, Neres was out injured hence there was little possibility of Van de Beek getting into the midfield but towards the end of the game after the coach switched to a 352 setup, Van de Beek should have been the one to drop into the midfield while Frenkie should have been moved further deep, in front of the defence to mark the runs of Alli and Moura while the defence deal with Llorente. In fact, the switching should have happened earlier in the second half as soon as as Eriksen got moved to the midfield and took control of it.

I don´t see him at a Club like Bayern, ManUtd oder Barca yet. I see him currently more on a level with Peter Bosz. He needs to proof himself to be reliable enough of getting results in a Top 3 League. He can´t take the next step at Ajax, needs to get out of the comfort zone and take an intermediate step like Nagelsmann with Leipzig.

Ajax isn't a comfort zone right now. If anything he has a bigger challenge ahead than when he started, proving last season wasn't a fluke. He's only been there for 18 months. And he is Dutch afterall, his contribution to Ajax and Dutch football in general could be invaluable if he continues like this. He'll leave in due time, but I don't see why he has to jump ship after one good season.

Ajax never was and never will be a comfort zone.

I don't think you can compare levels (in this case with Bosz) that easy. Methods are all so different. Persons are al so different. Bosz is an emotional person. Ten Hag is cold as ice.

I think he would do well at any big club, as long as the board and management will support him for 100%.
