Love Mata - seems like a top guy and has contributed some magic moments over the years. But not sure what the issue is here. He's not exactly been electrifying for the past few years and has looked way off the pace on several occasions when he has played. If Ole has decided to move forward without him then we should accept that. He won't have a problem finding another club at the end of the season. He might get a run out tomorrow but that would be a mistake against a mobile, high energy Sociedad team.

Club seem to be hyping him up today!

TBF, the club almost always posts pics from training featuring him. That's why, I felt that it's unlikely that he's been frozen out

Hope to see Mata starting vs Sociedad. We need to protect Bruno with a few of our players who are starting to pick up niggles. Surround him with pace and I think he's still got a role to play.

Probably been said before, but the thread keeps popping up giving fuel to some sort of Ole vs Mata narrative.

OP wording sounds immature. Hard to believe such a humble squad player is "frozen out" - he is aging and it was always a slow transition giving birth to Greenwood

I’d imagine Mata will play tomorrow or at least be in the squad, it’s simply a case of us moving forward with a younger squad and others now being ahead of him.

Fernandes is often our only creative player from midfield. McTominay can be a threat but that isn't his primary purpose, Fred sits deep and Marital and Rashford have no interest in doing anything other than creating for themselves. Whether it's Mata or someone else we need more than one player with the ability and aim of creating for others.

How does his wage have any bearing on his playing time?
When you're on a high wage you can either re-negotiatie a new deal on performance value or you're shown the door. Usually you get less time to play your way back into the team if you aren't showing value and you're at the back end of your career. Strange concept, I know considering how mangled our wage structure is.

If/when he leaves the club i hope he comes back as some sort of coach or something. He certainly could teach a few youngsters about how to be a professional. Also he is a bit of a tactician.

So he wasn’t frozen out at all. Sounds like he was given leave for personal reasons.
That's what I thought because of the social media silence. Would have been disappointed...and surprised...if anything else.

Saw this too, but it's typical of our fan base these recent years to turn every non story into something used to criticise the club or staff in someway without full disclosure.

Mata is a super likeable dude, there's nothing real to the notion of Mata being frozen out.

Bump.

I'm guessing Ole wasn't ever freezing out Mata, rather Mata was at home to be with family as his mum has been ill and has sadly passed away according to this tweet..

RIP

Why would he? All these conspiracy theories are just getting too stupid. Mata is one of the nicest people in football and definitely not somebody you freeze out.

Anyway, this makes more sense now. RIP Mrs Mata :( hugs for Juan.

Something like this was always the most likely explanation for his absence in the circumstances, but I'm very sorry to see it confirmed like this.

I lost my mother five months ago and I'm nowhere near dealing with it, just getting on with things, so my sincere condolences to the Mata family :(

Shit, makes sense that it was something big and personal to have kept him away for so long. Condolences to him and his family.

Makes more sense than being frozen out.

Very sad to hear. Props to the club for keeping it so silent.

That makes sense. It was always going to be a personal thing — there was never any reference of him being injured or simply frozen out due to tactics or anything like that.

Awful news. Hope he and the rest of his family are doing okay. RIP.

Sad news, wish him the best.

Just shows how little we really know about what's going on behind the scenes!

it was utterly ridiculous to see posters tying themselves into knots about why he wasn’t playing, and making up scenarios/ blaming the club/ Ole.

hope he’s ok.

Makes so much more sense, RIP Mrs Mata. She looked like a beautiful soul, just like her son.

Kinda figured it was family stuff, even if Ole never mentioned it. Hope we can see him again this season.

Very sad.

I did think it was something like this sadly. He's always on the bench, even when not playing, then suddenly he disappears for two extended periods of time with little explanation. Plus Ole never actually said he was injured, just that he'd be "away" for a few weeks.

Definitely. Ole's not the 'freeze 'em out' type.

Sorry about your Mum.
