The only way it will be stopped is by collective action from players.

If the players, not individuals, but as a group, say no, its done.

Without players, all the owners have is an an acre and a half of grass with some seats around it.
With Beyonce doing a half time dance.

You love to see it.

  • The 15 “founding clubs” of the Super League would share 32.5 per cent of these commercial revenues
  • A further 32.5 per cent would be distributed between all 20 participating teams, including the five sides invited to play in the competition each year
  • Twenty per cent of revenues would be allocated on “merit” or be dependent on performance in the competition
  • The final 15 per cent would be shared based on broadcast audience size
  • The competition winner would receive just 1.5 times more than the bottom side. By comparison, that ratio in Spain’s La Liga is closer to 3.5 times
  • Clubs will be also allowed to retain all revenues from gate receipts and club sponsorship deals
  • Super League clubs have committed to using only 55 per cent of their revenues on “sport spending”, such as player salaries, transfer and agent fees, according to people familiar with the terms
  • Super League clubs have also signed up to a “tax equalisation” clause so that “income tax on salaries shall be normalised and calculated at a rate of 45 per cent”, according to people with direct knowledge of the contracts
45% income tax is why the Government won't fully block the move, they'll be raking it in with 45% tax.

 a team who literally spent 400m + on 2 players talks about Fairness. God - hypocrisy just suicides.
That is the only problem imo. It is these shitty clubs as well as UEFA/FIFA being the "good" guys now. But I guess we take whatever we can!

Yes but they were banished for corruption , not because they were a crap team who couldn't buy their way out of trouble which is why I included the proviso 'not banned'
They were relegated as punishment. Something that can easily happen again.

I don't think this means every country gets to charge 45%, only that salaries will be normalized to 45% so that countries with lower taxes do not benefit when it comes to the salary cap.

They'll make some statement again about how much they condemn this whole thing, make some vague threats about financial penalites, this will drag on as these things tend to do, then will sort of get forgotten about while some more vague statements are made, and this whole thing will continue to inexorably march on.

Even if the SL was the best idea in the world, the fact that players, managers and fans had no say or even acknowledged when making the decision is what ultimately everyone is rightly against. It's not a defence of UEFA really.
The players and managers are employees, the fans are consumers - they're not entitled to know everything.

How so? They were literally running their mouth on TV last night

Perez must believe the contracts are ironclad
Where is Woodward defending this? Where are the Glazers? Where is anyone from the pl's 6 out there explaining their actions and the way forward? The only people speaking about it who are employed by the clubs are saying they don't know anything we don't know.

I honestly can't see a scenario in which the players are going through with the ESL. As much as they like making money, 90% of them truly love the game and they care a great deal what the fans think of them. This move has clearly been in the works for a long time but I think the Founding Clubs seriously underestimated the incredible and unanimous backlash from the fans.
I honestly can't see a scenario where many actually pull out and move elsewhere if the SL goes through. Some, sure. But I'd be very, very surprised if the likes of Messi, Ramos, Kane, Havertz, Bruno, De Bruyne or whoever else says "feck this, I love the game so much, I'm moving to Leicester City or Real Sociedad instead".

Bayern not being in or looking like they will be in it is helpful. That gives the CL some glamour still, PSG could also do this. If Chelsea and City grow a pair and pull out as they never really wanted to be apart of it. The Super League isn't going to look quite so super as half the teams are Ropey League ones.

Yeah, cannot see the Government doing this. However, they could tax the life out of them. I think with Brexit the UK will have more levers to do something (although that is me guessing than knowing.)

We all know this is true. That is the sad thing about it.
Based on what one random tweet?

Didn't want to be a part of it yet they're signed up as founding members of the SL and have the statement on their official sites. Do me a favour mate, they're as bad as the rest.

Arguably worse as they've only been invited due to massive financial doping and now they want to protect their own position at the top of football by making sure that isn't replicated by other clubs.

I disagree again.
There are many men or women out there right now that will be fighting for the good of football.
Then there are boys and girls like you that are just trying to shittalk the very players and people that are looking to do something.
Again with the personal stuff.
You need to grow up.
I don't think those players will do a damned thing.
Nobody's denying there's people doing something about it, my own son included.
I just don't believe those players will do anything more than issue a statement and continue to play.
It's their job.
You can fanboy all you want pal, but don't start getting personal because somebody disagrees with you.
There's a good boy.

Ultimately nothing lasts forever. PL, CL, FA Cup etc are all private competitions in which private businesses participate in - they don't have to remain the same forever, and are subject to change or dissolution at any time - I think every fan needs to be aware of that, if the last few days haven't made this point crystal clear.
There is no guarantee that our favourite competitions will remain.
I understand that and maybe I didn’t make my point clear, by alignment I meant something like places 1-2 go to SL, 3-4 to CL, 5-6 EL. It may not be feasible but it would feel a whole lot better than just expecting these SL teams hanging around their domestic leagues earning more money, resting players and not caring what position they finished.

I’m just annoyed and ranting at the sheer non caring balls of these rich people who give absolute zero fecks to absolutely anyone they are involved with, from their own staff to fans. Don’t care what mess they leave behind and are too lawyered up to be touched.

all my hopes are just on the players being against it as much as I am and hopefully taking pay cuts and playing elsewhere just to protect the support, what a dreamland ey

When do the Glazers or Roman Abramovic ever come out and comment on anything?

On the basis of what they’re forming the league for? Yes. It’s for TV money. Arsenal would attract more viewers than Nottingham Forest. It’s silly to compare them. You can’t say Arsenal don’t deserve it on current form and on the other hand mention Villa, Forest or Everton as being equally deserving. Even if it’s just based on historic sporting merit, Arsenal shit over those sides mostly.
That isn't what I said. My point is that their history (especially in Europe) is no more illustrious than a lot of other clubs. I disagree that a side who haven't won the title in 15 years, and who can't regularly regularly make the Champions League deserve a guaranteed place at the top European Competition, in perpetuity, simply because they are rich.

Neither Arsenal, (or Spurs for that matter) are part of "Europe's elite" either on the basis of history, or current performance. It is all about the fact that they are well placed financially, and that's what makes a mockery of this. It's about nothing more than people who don't understand the game, wanting to create a closed shop

Do you think they deserve a place over other European clubs? What about Benfica, or Ajax?

That's an excellent post, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Yeah it will lose in quality and get less money, obviously but I don't see it collapsing. The Government will jump in at some point if things really go south. It will also even the odds and actually make it exciting since the gap between the teams will be reduced, opening more opportunities for investors in the long term. The downside would be that the ESL teams getting richer and able to buy more players from the other not so lucky clubs. But then again if the FIA and the UEFA indeed manage to kick them out of every competition, where's the appeal for the players? They'd be reduced to play their same 38 odd games in a season, which can become boring fast, and then go home. Money can't compensate for everything. I can't think of many players willing to give a pass on playing for their country in the Euros, AFCON, Copa or the WC.

Like you said on a domestic level, kicking out the top 6 is doable and I don't see any of the 14 other teams objecting to that. On an international level less so, especially with the EU laws, but I suppose that the FIFA and UEFA won't back down either. They'll give instructions to the FAs to simply not call up the ESL players. Also who's going to be ref in ESL? The FIFA won't let any of their own officiate there.

I'm not fond of an even more watered down CL, or a WC in Qatar, and football needs a shake up but this is pure insanity. Unfairly and arbitrarily closing the shop at the highest level, writing their own rules for their own league, while still wanting to prey on the domestic competitions is a piss take that is never going to happen. I've read that some of the founders don't a rat's ass and even want their players to be banned from the international competitions. That gives weight to your assumption that these people neither are interested nor have a clue about football.

It ain't a FU to the UEFA or the FIFA or the oil clubs or whatever some fans like to sugar-coat it. It's been done to save the indebted big clubs in Italy and Spain and the owners of the english big six (Tottenham, lol) saw an opportunity to make even more money. Nothing more nothing less.
If that's correct it shows that the owners understand neither the game, the fans, or the players and I suspect, they would be in for a shock.

I wrote about this before as I suspected there might be problems reg. players contracts, and now I see that the Athletic has written about that aspect of this. behind a paywall but I will post it anyway:

https://theathletic.com/2529819/202...r-bonuses-what-players-think-of-super-league/

The players contracts might need to be re-negotiated. The question is then if the clubs suddenly can lose players that refuses a new contract. If for example a club does something that stops a player from playing for his national team (there are requirements from FIFA, UEFA and FA in the contracts), will the contract then be voided? The bonuses for qualifications to CL will not be relevant and might lead to reason for re-negotiating etc.

That's entirely irrelevant. They will face huge backlash irrelevant to what they 'have' to do, it's about what they should do.

Yes but not from playing performances, where people have been saying the teams need to be competitive to avoid being relegated because they might play badly. Any team could be relegated because of an infraction as were Rangers in Scotland.
And if they're still in the super league regardless isn't there less incentive not to fix matches again?

I suppose this is the only way? All memberships holders to cancel them all for United to make them feel the immediate pain?

Watch how quickly Boris sits back down once he hears about the 45% tax.
