Naw you’d want to start a tournament well a draw wouldn’t be a bad result to get points on the board.
If we win the group we don't get beyond the next round.

I mean, what does Shaw have to do to get a game? Kill all the fullbacks? Best LB in the league, gets dropped for a RB.

When he took over as manager, Southgate said he would pick players based on merit. What a load of bullshit.

Very surprised that Trippier is starting. I thought Shaw was the obvious choice for that position with Chilwell also pushing as well.

Mings and Phillips are underwhelming but can sympathise with Gareth there.

Jack Grealish just must start if fit, he has the ability to take this competition by storm and has surely earned the start. I agree with Rashford off the bench as the impact player but Jack over Sterling certainly.

Was very confident going into the match but am weary now. Croatia maybe aren’t the same team as 3 years ago but they have a crop of very experienced and talented players including Modric and I think we have given them hope with our team selection.

I mean the left back decision is a bit odd to say the least. Even though everyone is moaning about Grealish, I can see why we would want a a direct player like Sterling and I suppose Phillips makes a bit of sense in a game like this but that one is strange.

We'll just have to see how it goes.

Southgate has the weirdest starting lineups. I do not understand him. Rashford and Shaw are far better than the 2 Southgate have chosen instead. Trippier instead of Shaw - what is going on?

Rashford and Shaw was one of the best left sides in Europe last season. The way they played off each other was exceptional

We don’t need Rice and Phillips, need one and then Bellingham alongside them. In the next 2 games we should be just playing one of them and 4 attacking players in front behind Kane. Negative tactics again! The LB is bizarre to say the least. Personally would have picked Grealish over Mount or Foden.

Agree. I actually think that England has good enough players to win this year. But Southgate makes so funny choises and his line-ups are just strange.

Serious question, who the feck is Kalvin Phillips?
He’s great. Very defensive to have him and Rice but he reads the game really well and uses it intelligently. Clearly one of the best players in a team that performed beyond all expectations.

Shaw has had mentality issues throughout his career. Was very timid when he joined us and rumoured to be home sick, was absolutely overwhelmed by Mourinho’s management style. It’s not unlikely he’s outside of his comfort zone in the England set up too. And he finished the season in very poor form.

Without knowing how the players have trained, we can’t really say it’s an outrageous decision. Just an annoying one as a United fan, and a damaging one for Shaw. Hopefully he’ll use it as a source of motivation.

2 sackable offenses by the england manager already, Trippier at LB and Sterling over Grealish. Almost a 3rd one in Sancho not on the bench.

England deserve to lose. Might support Croatia, no united players in England anyway. Disclaimer: Am not English.

The other question is, will it be a 4231 or 433? Hopefully, the latter, which to be fair to Gareth, he normally plays when Mount is in there. Just wish we had a proper number 8.

Two good left backs, both in good form. Picks a right back at left back. And some people think Southgate is a good manager?

I thought it was fitness that was going to hold England back with how much they played collectively the past season and key injuries, but should've known, it's always the manager being dumb.

We have Chillwell and Shaw, so we play a right back? Insane.

I had a bad feeling before about him, but I wouldn't be surprised if we go out at the group stage. Such a waste.

Ye do. Gareth won't pick him because he's 17, despite having proven himself on a far bigger stage than Phillips or even Rice have.

If you pick players for a back three, play a back three!
Yeah for sure. He must have decided on the back four pre tournament, so having White come in was strange.

I’m not too bothered about the forward line. 5 subs means we can throw Grealish/Rashford on to change the game. I’d probably play Grealish over Foden though.

I’ll throw my hat in the ring and call that Chilwell is better than Shaw? Shaw has very little attacking output and Chilwell has a plan behind his crosses, Shaw just hits the ball without lookinh. Shaw also made several blunders in his last few games, so have absolutely no problem with him not starting. Severley overrated on this forum, this year’s Martial.
Shaw created the 2nd most chances in Europe behind only messi

He's petrified of Croatia - who are 3 years older..... without the same influx in those years that England have had. Madness. Should still win, but should be hammering them really in my opinion.

I mean, by your definition we may as well send him home after being overlooked by a RB, if he’s so fragile mentally, this will do wonders for his confidence I’m sure.

If it’s to do with training/injury then fine, not sure he ended the season that poorly and his body of work as a whole was the best in the league.

Chilwell and Sancho not even on the bench that has two goalkeepers? Mings, Stones is a centre back pairing that Croatia will look to exploit

How has Sterling been picked over Grealish on the left side? Sterling is in awful form.

At least, we are not playing five at the back, though. I was expecting a seven man defence.

Bellingham is more of an advanced 8 like the position Mount is playing.

I wouldnt be against putting him in there against Czech or Scotland, though.

So if we win today, and do something that no other England team had done, will this place actually be happy? Will we get off the managers back?
