That Turkish "defending" for the corners, holy shit. The first time was bad enough, but to do it again seconds after Lord Farquaad lost his mind about the first wasn't even Sunday League standard.
I will always see this now!

Doesn't he have the lowest minutes per goal in the Premier League (I think it is 1 goal per 80 minutes)? 11 in 20 is a great record in the end.

If that isn't doing much, I guess it just shows how high the standards are for him based on his history.
He scored the majority of those against Sheffield United, Burnley and Crystal Palace. He was either injured or started on the bench for more games than he started in the league (only 10). It's nothing to do with high standards for Bale ffs .

Interestingly Bale looked pretty fit today. His running was powerful at the end and he didn't look like he was blowing at all considering the conditions. Even if his interest in club football has wained he looks well up for this and still a top player if he wants to be.

Robbie Savage is such a bellend.
Yeah, it's great when everyone else has to listen to the English commentators shamelessly cheerleading, but when anybody else does it :nono:

Sometimes I wonder how good Bale could have been if he had cared enough throughout his career. I don't hold it against him in any way. But I can't help but wonder. Could have been like Robben.
He hit the highs for quite a few seasons though. From about 2012 to 2017 he was up there with the very best, and with Neymar only second to Messi and Ronaldo. His final season with Spurs was out of this world. It's just he didn't hit the numbers of Ronaldo nor did he have the consistency so doesn't get rated that high, but prior to the injuries and the decline of his pace he was some player. It's only since those issues that he's really stoped caring.

He’s definitely well past his peak, but he has refined his passing game and he’s learning how to make an impact on the game without having to rely on his sadly long gone world class physicality.

I think Wales suits him because there are a lot of players who while not technically excellent or playing at the highest level, will run for 90 minutes and do all the dirty work required, it’s a really honest group. Add a couple players with quality like Ramsey and someone like James who suits the Welsh set up he can still contribute.

I think the time for him at the top in domestic football has come to an end, not just because of his physical decline and the struggle of playing a full season, but I think mentally he’s in a place where he doesn’t need it anymore. I think he’s going to enjoy the Euros, then go to a weaker league to end his career.
Yeah for sure, and more power to him. Those two assists were top drawer and great to see. I hope he takes you as far as possible (before losing in the final to the Three Lions obv).

Mate at his best he was arguably better than Robben

He just couldn't stay fit long enough during his prime. Then he kinda lost interest...

No surprise. Wales, golf, Madrid (Spurs) after all.

Were Soyuncu and another Turkish player really asking for offside on the second goal?

Well, they caught Italy "offside" from a corner in their first game, no harm asking the question

Yeah, he missed a pen that could have been crucial, but Bale was excellent today. Really at his best in this game.

And just a really good game overall. One of the best games of the tournament so far.

Game of the tournament so far for me. Holland-Ukraine was good but this felt more intense. Come on Wales!

Wales taking care of business here. Well done! They have a good chance to progress after this.

I think that would ruin it. I assume it’s just “WE’RE ITALIAN AND ANGRY AS feck” over and over.

Has anyone with 4 points (or its equivalent) ever not qualified for the Round of 16 in this 24 team format in Euro/World Cup history?

This format has only been at the Euros once before and 4 points was more than enough. A lot of teams with 3 got through.

Odd to see Turkey this bad after so many countries including themselves kept closing the gap over the decades.

Saw them stuff Holland 4-2 a couple of months ago. Really odd they just haven't turned up at all, with Yilmaz having had the season of his life, and them virtually playing this game and the next one at home.

Disagree with your first statement there.
The rest I agree with. And I don't really blame him for it. He already achieved a lot and made a ton of money. I get why he'd lose his drive.
But that's exactly why I regard Robben that highly. He had all the reasons to stop caring but never did.

Have to wonder if economic factors have played a big part in this. It just seems like the richer countries are now dominating international tournaments.

They just seemed to lack any dynamism in this tournament. A few good players for sure, Under, Calhanoglu, Soyuncu on his day (which hasn't been this tournament) - you can't really say they're bad players, but they're not world beaters, maybe that's the problem, usually you do need some stand out quality to pull the rest along for a team like Wales or Turkey.

Nobody there that really drives at anybody, commits players, makes runs forward. It was all very flat and predictable.

Brilliant result for Wales - I thought Bale was the best player on the pitch by a distance.

Turkish football is and was always like this. They are very emotional, very strong and intense when they play at home, but if you follow some of the games by Turkish clubs, tactically they are a royal mess, the nature of the games is very chaotic.

Stop! I'm still smarting over that loss away to Istanbul which pretty much sealed our exit from the UCL :mad:
