I think people have to realise that the price is so low because of his wages. No one is going to spend 60m on him when they have to whack him on a minimum of 3 years at about 300k a week. That's around 45m on wages alone.
Exactly this. I’d actually guess 4-5 years at 350-400k per week.

Between wages and amortized transfer fee he is going to cost like 30m per year for 4-5 years and then have little sell on value. Very few clubs in the world can afford that, but United is one of them.

Yeah I think going with Militao makes sense. I just went off the reports that Madrid want Kounde or Torres. How good of a CB is Alaba though. Are you ok with him replacing Ramos or would you have preferred not to sign him and extend Ramos contact instead
From what I have read Alaba is a little tired of being central back (although in his last statements he says that he does not care). Perhaps I would prefer to see him in the midfield.
I would logically prefer Ramos. I'm afraid the club has less money than expected and Kounde / Pau are utopias. Apparently there are already 150 million extra costs at the New Bernabéu

Who would the best CB available be to you? I'm quite interested. Think all options have serious flaws.
I agree that. So I guess the question is who suits us best. Or more precicely, who suits Maguire and how we want to play.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert. In my opinion, you need to see a lot of games from a centerback to really know them well. For a good CB, it is not just about what they do, but what they dont do (or very rarely do). Quite a few would be very excited about Bailly if they saw him in three games and were lucky with the games they saw.

I also think people put too much weight on numbers and apperance (what is easy to measure and see). For instance, people dont like Pau Torres and claim that he is a copy of Lindelof. Based on what? Both being passive defenders? So is Varane! He obviously look a bit similar to Lindelof. Does that affect peoples judgement? I suspect it does. In my opinion, Pau Torres have some traits that could make him a good fit for us. Left foot, quick and very "agile". Furthermore, he looks to be to be great on the ball (alot better than Varane). A similar case is Kounde, who is labeled "too short" (despite "never" having issues in the air).

In my opinion, all three CBs that I have mentioned in this post would be very good additions and probably CBs that would suit us very well. I must admit, that I would have to see a lot more from both Torres and Kounde to be able to say who would be the best CB for us and whether they would be better than Varane. Varanes merits speaks volume. But one should be vary that merits could be noise and misleading.

We also have to consider if we're going for Sancho, he's going to be on some big wages as well, so it would pretty much empty the bank both of these signings. I do see the reticence to dive in on this one, as much as I think he'd be perfect for us.

Thanks for explaining. For me name-wise it's Varane but think Torres would suit us best.

Ahhh, this is going to be a painful long drawn thing again with him signing a new contract and us then being desperate for CB options. It's all too familiar story, but still hurts to see

I'm still not convinced we'll reach the destination, but all aboard the Varane slow train. Certainly won't be an express train.
I’m not fully aboard yet, I’m not watching the thread, but I am checking it occasionally.

Do we have to go through another long, drawn out saga as soon as the Sancho saga is complete?! Can us as fans just have a nice easy transfer saga for once please.

To be fair though, I care a whole lot less about this deal than the Sancho one. With Sancho we have never realistically looked at other targets but with Varane he is one of half a dozen names for the position that probably represent an upgrade, if it looks tricky hopefully we will tell Madrid to stuff it and move on to someone else.

I actually think the Sancho saga will be the determining factor to this transfer. Will dictate if we can afford him or not. I think this will move quickly or we will move on quickly.

Yeah i agree to be fair.

The part in bold, the only other interest we have shown is Pau Torres isn't it? We could move on but I don't think there is any CB available or attainable that is as good as Varane.

We can afford him, I'd say if we get Sancho we're almost nailed on to get Varane.

I don't see how the two transfers are even remotely connected. We're signing Sancho. I don't see how that means we'll get Varane? We've got the money for Varane, but thats probably not where this transfer falls down, its him signing a new Real contract or going somewhere else.

The reason I say they're connected is because you don't land a player like Varane without a team that's challenging for top honours. Signing Sancho shows how serious we are, if we then sign Varane, we'll be incredibly attractive to most big players.

Sancho will come on quite big wages and a big transfer fee. Varane is going to be big wages, so the fee would need to be pretty knocked down for us to afford both without having sold anyone yet. It's a huge outlay for both transfers, so I think if we did get those two, that would be it for the window.

I wouldn't be surprised if we picked up 1 more player but I'd be extremely happy with Sancho and Varane. That'd be a fantastic summer.

My dream summer would have been Varane, Sancho and Rice. Obviously that would be too expensive but 2/3 would be fantastic should we pull it off!

Would still spend the duration of the summer quietly wishing that there is some funds floating around to get a decent DM though :wenger:

It just seems like this is going to come down to United or PSG for Varane and which club he decides to accept an offer.

You'd think playing in England would offer him a better experience than playing in France given he's french and somewhat gets that experience while playing for his national side.

Varane Sanco and someone like Camavinga or Touchmeni isn't unrealistic though! We seem to have highlighted those positions so hopefully we can get the two top targets and be smart to buy a less expensive option in place of Rice. However Garner and Hannibal aren't too far off either. Hopefully we could hijack the deal for Locatelli. But Italian players love Italy unfortunately. But their are plenty of options out there in place of Rice.
