See, that Ancelotti tweet has me wary on this.

If all it would take is for Ancelotti to give him the assurances that he's in his plans (and let's be honest here, why wouldn't he be?) then he'll be staying at Madrid.
I mean it’s never as black and white as: “I’m definitely leaving”, but nor is it “if you have a chat with me and a pat on the back I’m definitely staying”. A player can genuinely be interested in joining us and still be potentially trying to sign a new deal if the current club match his demands. It’s not an absolute either way.

"Martial...He's isolated Skrtel here..."
You do realise that if we had a top CB next to maguire we wouldnt need a mcfred double pivot to shield the defence? Agree a top DM would be nice but CB is more important. Championships are built on defences.
I get what you and another poster are saying, and I agree to an extent as it's why I was insistent on Bailly playing more as for all of his faults he allowed us to be much more aggressive in gaining territory higher up the pitch.

But overall when I watch us go against any top side, the glaring issue is a lack of a midfielder besides Pogba that teams are afraid of. City/Liverpool/Chelsea/PSG etc all do the same thing in aggressively pressing McT/Fred/AWB because all of those players are awful on the ball under pressure and it leads to losing possession and control of the game. Which is why we tend to sit deeper in those games and willingly have them try to punt balls over the top: A safe option that has a low likelihood of success but also won't lead to easy chances for the other side. I'm of the opinion that a top DM that is able to play through the lines with confidence would allow us to punish teams that are gung ho without relying on Pogba to be the only one that has the quality/technique to play those passes.

In the end both positions are vital for us to upgrade the squad, so here's to hoping they both are addressed this summer.

If it's "do want" or "do not want" - it's the former.

Sure. But the deal would have to be the right one - within the total context of ins and outs this season.

Because he obviously won't come cheap.

He's on less than 200k at Real, we're not going to give him over a 150k wage hike unless we move de Gea or Pogba on. We're not PSG or City, our resources are finite and we're simply not going to cripple ourselves by offering every Tom, Dick and Harry upwards of 300k a week.
And this is where there could be a problem. All we have are rumours but I doubt he would accept 250 unless he had to. RM have offered 225 according to the rumours... This is his last big contract.

Yeah until he's offered more money then a challenge can wait
But if he rejected renewals in 2018 pre covid what makes you think Madrid will be able to make a better position post covid?

Tbh I wasn't aware they'd tried to renew him in 2018

He's rejected their post-covid offers as well and they don't have that much money right now...

It's nothing too crazy in an environment where their longtime captain Ramos rejected renewals offers as well and eventually left

DDG is on £400k and Pogba on £300K. Move those and we have enough money to pay wages to Sancho, Varane and Camavinga.

Then we have Mata, Romero, Lingard, etc who can be moved for some incremental cost savings.
Pogba isn’t on 300k a week.

Also Maria’s and Romero’s contracts expired today.

Can someone give me a brief summary of where we’re at with Varane? Thanks

Varane & Torres would be great plus Sancho and Rice.

Then we just need a striker at some stage.

Very much doubt we're interested in both Varane and Torres.

Partly because it was just MEN who reported it, partly because we don't need two CB signings and partly because Torres will likely be eyeing a move to Real Madrid to replace Varane if he leaves. Doesn't make sense for him to come here to be third choice.

Cheers, needed this update as well. He looks so good, would propel us up the lookers table:drool:

Kinda got my attention now as this isn't probably Woodward putting fake bids in anymore.

Sancho, Varane plus a starting XI central midfielder and we might just have ourselves a team ready to have a serious tilt at the title and go deep in the Champions League next season.

My balls are tingling.

But mostly because we have a back 4 and Maguire is definitely starting

There's only one United!
I'm a bit apprehensive of these Madrid players as they always seem to play games with their team to get a new and better contract.
Is this another one?
Only time will tell.
