I can't unsee his horrific performance against citeh in the CL last season. I don't watch Spanish football so I don't really have an informed opinion of his ability. Has he ever had any performances like that previously or was it just a total one-off?

Well I'd have him , experienced top CB, watched him in Euros and hes very very good. How much if we can get him along with Sancho would be a decent window.

Sorry but my inner transfer Muppet just wants to get this out. If we get Varane and Locatelli we are all set for title challenge next season. With and added assumption that Sancho (touch wood) passes his medical

If Varane wants to wait until the end of July then clearly we should look to move on and see if Christian Romero is available from Atalanta. I'd prefer Varane but we can't wait until right before the season begins to bring in a player that is expected to be a starting XI talent.
This!

Plus you couldn’t be spending months muppeting after a defender who is more than likely just fishing for a new deal at the club that he chose over us in the past. Going to leave this one off unless there’s something much more serious reported. Bang of reporters making things sound more immediate and interesting than it actually is to get clicks. I’d rather we just went straight for Romero or Tapsoba. They both look like they are on the way up.

Think we're still a top drawer central midfielder short
You don’t need a perfect team in every position to win a league.
We weren’t miles off a challenge last season, with just those two additions and another year of development from Mason, we absolutely would have a squad capable of a strong challenge. I think another more attacking right back could add a lot to the squad, as far as options go.

Our most reliable journalists - Simon Stone and James Ducker as well as the super reliable Bouhafsi said that we are in contact with Real Madrid for Varane, people here thinks it's just posturing for a new big contract. None of our reliable journalists linked us with Ramos back then, it was mostly Spanish papers. The ever unreliable L'Equipe says that Varane needs 3 weeks to make a decision and is still speaking with RM for a new contract and PSG for a move, and everyone here takes it as gospel. You guys should really learn how to manage the reliability of your news sources.

Agreed. Id go with McT personally, put him in West Ham’s team and he’s be getting the same praise as Rice imo
I'd go with McT as well as he's better on the ball than Fred and he's much more physical and athletic. Personally i think he could learn to play that holding role by himself.

Having two guys back there like Varane and Maguire should give us the confidence to be a bit more attack minded.

If the numbers bandied about are accurate, and if he really wants to join United, this should be wrapped up soon. No lengthy saga, as that would just indicate that he's unsure. Given the numbers, we're not going to spend a month haggling over a couple of million when it's already a great deal financially and cheaper than the other targets who are, compared with Varane, completely unproven.

He just doesn’t pass well enough to be a holding midfielder, I want someone that is very competent in possession and especially under pressure (although I think mctominay is improving in this regard).

We don't need Varane to be particularly aerially dominant anyway. After all he'll be partnered with Maguire, who is one of the more pro-active, aggressive aerial presences around.

We just need Maguire's partner to be resilient enough aerially that he can cope when being targeted by the opposition. And there's no reasonable way of twisting the stats where Varane isn't better in the air than Lindelof. Once he's not someone the opposition actively think they can bully, we're fine.
This exactly.

Not only that, but his defensive awareness is much worse than Fred’s. Fred has far superior defensive stats per 90 than McT despite them playing in the same position (pivot). Being strong and physicaldoes not necessarily a good DM make.

I think McT’s best role is box-to-box with more emphasis on attack than defence.

Varane would be a serious signing. Instant impact like dias with city and vvd with Liverpool.

Can't imagine Madrid would let him go and rely on alaba, nacho and militao for the whole year. That's a recipe for disaster.
