Is Sterling the best english player at the moment?

England are effectively playing games with 3 attackers against an entire midfield and defence until Grealish enters the fray. Without Sterling’s drive, movement and insistence on being an absolute pest, England would be absolutely screwed.

For as long as Southgate lines up as he does, Sterling is England’s most important player by a distance with nobody else who has his attributes, so if he goes down injured, the whole plan is out the window, or at least much less effective than it has been.

Sterling at United would have been good. In England, Maguire and Sterling have developed a good partnership. Maguire makes the forward pass, and Sterling receives it in the half space and makes a turn. Sterling helps Maguire by closing down the space in front of Maguire. Shaw's mobility connects these two at both ends of the pitch. Sterling's current role in England is propably what Mourinho had intended with Sanchez, I would think.

He's a United fan as well, just so unfortunate.

I think Raheem Sterling has been benefitting from having Luke Shaw as his leftback, they connect well.

Harry Kane on the other hand isn't getting enough service from the midfield. Mason Mount seems to be playing deeper...and you would think that Southgate would utilize someone like James Maddison, but he is a very defensive minded coach.

So I think Harry Kane is still England's best player, but it's hard to score when your not getting much service.

I think Sancho could certainly duplicate for United what Sterling has been doing for England. I wonder Solskjaer would adopt such a deliberate and cautious style, as favored by Southgate, Tuchel, and Guardiola.

He is your best attacking threat atm. Wish Rashford was playing like him.
He has always been a threat. People just get annoyed he needs 5 or 6 chances to score and tends to make the wrong decisions when he has time to think. This can always backfire when the score is 0-0.

Rashford doesn’t have the movement or versatility Sterling has but is probably a better finisher, his stats are great for his age. His problem is that he relies purely on his speed. He isn’t the most intelligent forward or skillful. So when he is out of form you have a half hearted sprinter on the pitch and nothing more.

That pass for the opener was sensual.

If Grealish does that we’re all crowning him Balon D’Or.

Sir Alex didn't want him because of how he runs. Said his hips won't last or something

He does have the worst case of anterior pelvic tilt I've ever seen on a professional athlete.

I didn't understand the absurd criticism of him. He's your most important attacker right now, making things happen in every game. But for some reason he becomes an easy target for ridicule.

Bingo, Sterling for some reason needs to do much more than someone like Grealish to satisfy people. He's just 26 and has been key to multiple titles for city and has over a decent duration been one of England's biggest threats in attack.

That's not true. That's why he didn't sign Henderson, nothing to do with Sterling.

Is their any chance we can bid for him at one stage if he decide to leave city?

He upset the middle-aged gammons in the media when he left their beloved Liverpool. Thats a big part of it.

He would be terrific at United. He’s not really a player we need though. I’d take him just to piss off Liverpool fans.

not sure where he would go. He can be a top player anywhere.

Seems him and Pep have fallen out a bit.

Sterling, Greenwood and Sancho does sound tasty imho. Its got two out and out scorers and one super talented assist maker who can carry the ball and see a pass. Playing along with Pogba, Bruno and Sancho I think Raheem would score more than he does at City.

I do think Pep wants rid of him because he doesn't suit our new 11 midfielders tactic. Pep is pulling all the pace out of City (and a lot of the flair) to make us into a ball retention machine now we've pretty much abandoned the super high press. Because of the way teams sit in vs us (well we kinda pin them in) there is no room for Raheem to make those runs. City aren't nearly as entertaining without Raheem/Sane on the wings and much more methodical. We don't play to any of his strengths anymore, I think at United where its about breaking with pace he'd fit right in.

interesting.

Sterling will clearly want to play, do you think he’s going to go?

onto the hypothetical scenarios… would City contemplate selling him to United, and how would that go down with fans?

with City inserting anti-United clauses into young players’ contracts who they sell, it would appear to be something they wouldn’t even contemplate?

I thought Pep adopted that approach last season because of the Covid disruption? I think Sterling to United could possibly happen if we wanted him and paid a decent fee. Sterling would join I’m sure. Sam Lee says Pep wants to keep both Sterling and Silva if he can though.
