Hoping England win so Maguire and Shaw get all the respect they deserve from the football watching public. Maguire has had such a crazy year, loads of our fans on his back. Shaw has had to come back from the worst injury you can get and had to deal with Jose and our fans. They both deserve it. Italy are a different proposition though.

Surely we would have beaten Villarreal had he been fit. How unfortunate that the injury came when it did.

He had great Euros, hopefully he will end up in team of the euros if they announce that thing.

Him and Shaw both had great Euros but LB position has lot of competition.

Looks a different player almost with a better defensive partner….who knew players need players who compliment their strengths and weaknesses to perform at their best.

He was awful against spurs, what did you want Keane to say?
Have you ever noticed that some people may criticise someone when that person is not doing too well but are fairly quiet when that person does well and the reverse applies?

So Keane hasn't said something good about maguire in the 10 months since?

I cannot aay I am an avid follower of pundits every word but I do remember him being vocal about Harry and De Gea in that particular game and I have not seen anything overly complimentary since then.

The poster has no clue about it and doesn’t want to admit it. All he knows is one match criticism. He probably mistaken Keane with van der vaart.

Unfortunatly I’m not a sad sack that can be bothered trailing through 2 years of games to produce a 5 minute video. But instead simply check the Norwich game from last season where Lindelof and Bissaka have it covered, he decides to get involved creating a massive space that gets exploited then Shaw has to leave his man to cover him.

There was a similar situation last night where he had no need to go there which then pulled Stones out of position which Denmark then exploited and Walkers pace bailed you guys out.

I think he is decent but he has a lot of room for improvement and hopefully he does, like I said earlier a lot of his faults seem to be caused by an over eagerness to get involved. More experience under his belt and he’ll hopefully iron those things out so he can be a proper world class defender.

I’m just not going to blow smoke up his ass because he makes a good few headed clearances when he is causing bigger issues in the defence.
That's it really. You said it yourself

But Lindelof is as good as him according to a portion of the Caf so we must have 2 Wc cbs on our hands. Why do we need Varane?

England seem to have benefitted from his injury with us and subsequent time off. He basically had a month off from being injured when we could have done with him in the EL Final and now he’s been fresh for a couple of England games.

You can't do that football is a team sports of 11 players and it is highly important for defenders and other players to build a chemistry. Once HM gets a proper team around him especially not as shite of a player as Lindelof we can judge him, also we hardly had a run for the title. Trophies define better players too. Let Maguire have a go with a team in full strength and even perhaps a better manager who understand modern football.

Also heading wise they are level, Defending wise on the ground, Vidic slightly edges Maguire, once again compare Maguire to Vidi when a passive and poor player like Lindelof doesn't create as much mess for him. We dominated a lot of teams also due to better midfield and world class attackers(in that I think we are not far in a year or two. That means the perception of players will be also very different when players can be bailed out by attackers and have much better defensive cohesion as a team resulting in less chances created for other teams..

Strength wise they are about the same
Attacking wise, Maguire is much better dribbler and passer of the ball. Even just comparing them stat by stat, skill by skill, Maguire is inch worse defender but superior in attacking sense. But yeah Vida didnt have to worry about that much because he had Rio Ferdinand and Carrick, Scholes in front of them. It's a nonsense to claim Vida was anything but above average on the ball, he mostly played it simple because he didn't have that ability to dictate the play and didn't have to because of players around him did it for him.
Very late reply, but since we had an exchange.. And Maguire is well above average on the ball? His dribling is good, he certainly isn’t «dictating» our play to a high standard, that’s just patently untrue. If he did, we wouldn’t look like tools trying to play out from the back. That aspect of his game is certainly overrated. Lindelöf whom you seem not to rate is a lot more adventurous in his forward passing.

Vidic scored a lot more goals, so saying Maguire is better offensively is a hard sell for me. Also, to your argument about the players around him, didn’t our clean sheet record come with Brown at RB and Evans as Vidic’ partner?

Not trying to put Harry down, mind, I think he is one of the best right now, but Vidic was something else.

I speak to fans who are not United fans and quite alot of them rate Maguire, it seems that the ones that rate him the least are United fans.

It was only in august when alot of fans on here were claiming Smalling is better than him, saying we sold our best defender.

Good to see that those have disappeared.

I always said that Harry is a good defender but he has his flaws.
United need to bring in a defender that could compliment him.

Some of the comments made throughout this thread about our captain Harry are embarrassing.. This starts at the very 1st page to see what some caf members think of him... The most vocal member against Harry has been 'Schmeichel's Cartwheel' who's always claimed he's not good enough for United.. I wonder how many of these caf members have now started to do an embarrassing u-turn ?

Maguire has been playing very well in the tournament. Helps that he has a more than capable defensive partner alongside him, and the protection in midfield, something he is lacking at United.

a lot of United fans are thick tbh. The Pogba and Martial fanatics I find are the most deranged and toxic...

there were even some on here who were demanding Maguire to be sold or loaned out..

Agreed.

It was complete nonsense, I remember coming on here after a game and after every goal, Maguire was blamed, even if he was nowhere near the ball or man.

We can all accept he was not perfect and made a few mistakes but he has been amazing for us. now we are also seing him develop into a leader. Its brilliant.

Yep.

He was good in his first season, excellent in his second season. But for a lot of ignorant fans they just wouldnt see it!

It's taken missing the end of the season and a good Euro tournament for some at least to finally see what a quality defender he is.

Yep, its interesting these so called United fans are now staying out of this thread who criticised him, called him the worst transfer ever.

He has been very good for us, he is quite the calming influence. if he wasn't good, he wouldn't walk into that England team straight from an injury and play every minute since.

The people who mocked him don't even have the decency to acknowledge their mistake.

Eh, in his first season it was pretty much a wash (in my opinion), and Lindelöf was better early on this past one. Harry has really improved since the rocky start, though, and has proven himself to be fecking class. A lot of the people who were angry about spending world class money on him will be the kind who don't want to be seen backing down and admitting to being wrong, though, so they'll refuse to acknowledge his improvement.

I think it’s more that they are Lindelof fans trying to say “but he’s as good as Maguire!”

in who’s world?
