I know people are skeptical about this but why would he stay really? aside from for money theres no other reason to stay. Madrid is full of ancient players and their younger ones dont look too promising. I mean if theres even a slightest chance that Madrid would win La Liga or CL anytime soon, do you think Ramos would have left? he's not stupid.

There are clubs that look much more promising than RM right now. So Varane might as well leave to experience something new and make more money along the way than staying at Madrid and make similar or less money. They can boast about La Decima or some other bollocks like that but those are in the past, the future looks bad for Real Madrid honestly. Premier League is starting to dominate CL again while retaining its domestic competitiveness, hard to say no to that for someone who has won everything like Varane.
Varane would stay if they paid him the same money as they are paying Alaba. But they won't so hes off. Madrid's loss and hopefully our gain.

He’s spoken
I remember last year when people told me he "knows about Bundesliga well" while I pointed out he's only riding the train for popularity. Guess what, he's now "reporting" Varane (by forwarding a news from another source, what a surprise) I guess he knows about La Liga just as well as Bundesliga then. And when we finally sign other players he will be an expert at those players' league too

He’s just an expert in everything I guess. Genuinely I didn’t even know we were interested in Varane until his tweet this morning.

He’s groundbreaking.

Still surprised he’s not banned here. Absolute fraud.

Ah, got it now. That is, google got it for me:smirk:

Floyds from Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink, I wanted us to buy him back in the days of yore.
I remember Jerrel well, he was like a viper.

Pretty Boy Floyd and Donny Sideways, thought, that sounds like a bust waiting to go bust if I ever heard one

I can't wait for the tap in merchant himself Fabrizio Romano to confirm this. The guy is the football transfer version of pippo inzaghi

I’m not sure I fully understand this transfer from his or Real’s perspective. Why is he leaving despite being a first choice centre back and very much in his prime? Why is he taking a step down (as sad as that is to say) at age 28? Why is Real so keen to get rid of him and have a partnership of Nacho and Alaba next year?

Are we buying a crock? Or a troublemaker?
A step down? Real finished 2nd in an inferior league did they not?

Isn't there a slight concern amongst fans that Varane has looked quite wobbly against the top English side in the CL ?

I mean, the CL match day thread involving Madrid-Liverpool tie a few months back was hardly complimentary on Varane's performance.

Eh? Not that I'm a fan or anything but Romano's been all over it.
With vague quotes whom he can easily pull out like pushing for a deal, preparing a bid, waiting for Real to talk to the player etc

Didn't wee agree the fee with Dortmund for Sancho on a weekend? Just thought it could be possible to do the same here...

I have no doubts Maguire can bring him up a level ;)

“Personal terms not a problem” is his favourite. Easiest to blag about

Yeah and unlike us on a 2nd they actually mounted a title challenge and could’ve won the league. I love United but being objective it’s a step down - Real won more than us in last 3, 5, 7 years and according to bookies they’re more likely to win a league or champions league next season.

He was completely blindsided regarding the Telles deal to United. Then again this year regarding Roma's alleged bid for him. He changed from no possibility to a possibility in 2 days

He’s looked extremely wobbly for a couple of seasons when he’s not had Ramos alongside him steadying him.

Both militao and nacho have looked a lot more solid this season, especially militao who I feel is criminally underrated.

He‘s being bought for his speed predominantly - if you wish to play an attacking 433 with a high line along the lines of what klopp employs (which it appears OGS wants to do this season) then you need a rapid defender who will win races against opposition runners chasing balls over the top or through a transitioning midfield designed to beat the press.

That isn’t maguire, but varane could do that job reasonably well. Against top-tier sides who apply the pressure however and hem you in you need the sort of traditional defender who anticipates the danger in/around the box and clears it or puts the block in - that’s maguire/militao/Ramos territory and where I’ve seen varane struggle.

Potentially he could do well when paired with maguire because they bring very different and complementary qualities to the table.

Maguire will be an excellent foil for him. Maguire himself is world class but has his limitations just like most centrebacks do, strengths and weaknesses. They really should be complimenting each other perfectly and on paper we will have the best defence in the league quite comfortably.

Once again, in a much poorer league. A very important fact you keep missing.

Not Varane related, but I agree with the bolded part. I think Militao is a really good CB. In fact the first time I saw him in action was as a RB, saw him play live against Liverpool at Porto in 2019 and even though Liverpool won comfortably, he was clearly the best Porto player in the pitch despite playing out of position.
