Wonder will we see another era of hip-hop as we saw in the 90’s? I mean so many unbelievable artists in their pomp. I doubt it.
Thing is, I lost the love for the genre around 97... when were you into hip hop?

I didn’t start listening until 2000. Eminem was the reason I started listening but I was 11. I only started listening to 90’s stuff around a decade ago. I mean of course I heard all the famous stuff from back then bur it was actually Hectic ‘a Hip-Hop thread that made me listen to more obscure (at the time) stuff. Of course now, I know I slept on some of the greatest albums. But that’s the beauty of Hip-Hop, even now I find gems, even tunes that I didn’t appreciate the first time — they grow on me. Just so so much to choose from.Thing is, I lost the love for the genre around 97... when were you into hip hop?
Nice one. Which means the 90s stuff still sounds great today.I didn’t start listening until 2000. Eminem was the reason I started listening but I was 11. I had their album on cassette
Yeah I listened to them for a while actually but slightly came off them as I started to like different type of flow. It’s weird with me because for the longest time I didn’t listen to Jay Z because I didn’t particularly dig his flow but now I think he’s one of the best. I change my mind like that. But yeah those guys were in my playlist for a long time at one point — I usually make a playlist within a playlist.@Paxi remember the Fu Shnickens? I'm sure they came before Das EFX, one of the rappers had a very similar rap style to Das EFX.
Blondies Rapture kept giving and giving.La Shmoove!
Absolutely, which is why I can’t really get into today’s stuff. I prefer listen to some 90’s stuff that I haven’t had the chance to listen over anything that’s put out today but that’s just me. I know there are good, talented artists today but it’s a preference thing.Nice one. Which means the 90s stuff still sounds great today.
You ever listen to Mr Cheeks from the Lost Boyz? I always loved his voice and flow.Yeah I listened to them for a while actually but slightly came off them as I started to like different type of flow. I have but didn’t dig it unfortunately. Honestly, I’ll keep coming back to artists and then I’ll hear a certain tune or a beat and I’ll be hooked. It happened to me with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jeru The Damaja, Jay Z and many more.. you’d think it would be an instant like but for some reason I just like to explore at my own pace. You ever listen to Mr Cheeks from the Lost Boyz? True. I've found myself nodding along to most of the lists posted. And to the poster who mentioned Dilated Peoples. Great shout. Not listened to them for years. You can't hide you can't run, is another gem of theirs. This thread tells me one thing, hip hop is so rich in terms of quality that we can all share a different set of top 5 and no one would be wrong.
That basslineNotorious B.I.G - Notorious Thugz
It's my favourite hip-hop song I think.That bassline
That's a banger. Actually thought about listing it yesterday but then I couldn't be botheredAm I disappointed this hasn't been mentioned yet?
Yes I am.
I'd forgotten about this. Great shout.Nore - Superthug
Saw somebody had mentioned the Neptunes and it popped back in my mind. Absolute ear worm.I'd forgotten about this. Great shout.
Am listening to it bangin my head and jumping in my chair right now .Saw somebody had mentioned the Neptunes and it popped back in my mind. Absolute ear worm.
Classic. And short enough to warrant an instant rewind.Am listening to it bangin my head and jumping in my chair right now .
Da joint is another great one! Love the atmosphere.Classic. And short enough to warrant an instant rewind.
Think Eric Sermon is worthy of a shout in this thread as well. Couple of classics from EPMD's 'Back in Business'...

I subbed out Hell of a Life out of my list at the 11th hour. Tough choice and one I didn't make lightly. Hope he regains some of his previous form in this week's album release.I know he's the antithesis of hip and underground but not enough Kanye in this thread for me.
Jesus Walks
Monster
Hell of a Life
Has he got something coming this week?! I had no idea. Exciting (though agreed his last was horrible). Dave's new album coming this week too (LOVED Pyschodrama) but I'm a little worried he's leaned too much into the whole drill thing...I subbed out Hell of a Life out of my list at the 11th hour.
