ok, im gonna go out on a limb here.. i never see the Varane play. I mean yes i seen him but just here and there.. never like a full 90 mins kind of game..

So, since i only watch the EPL, who is the most identical to Varane in terms of ability, leadership etc.?

Van Dijk? Maguire? Stones? Stam? Dias? Rudiger? David Luiz? Mings ( he wish )

And is Varane a lefty?

P.S: can i get 1 more like? just need 1 more like so that i dont need a moderator to approve my post every single time.. hahaha
I don’t really think he’s that stylistically similar to any of the players currently in the league. I honestly think his closed stylistic matchup is Rio. Both have good recovery pace, read the game well, tall and physical when needed. Out of your list he’s probably closest to Van Dijk but Van Dijk is more physical. The biggest weakness with Varane is that he occasionally doesn’t impose himself physically/aggressively enough in the challenge. I’d say like Rio he’s very much a game reader first and foremost and someone who likes to play on the back foot whereas Maguire looks to play on the front foot and be more aggressive. I do think on paper Varane will really complement Maguire.

Seen something before about ole wanting to try a 3 at back formation a lot more next season as he doesn’t want to push lindelof out of his plans. He likes lindelof forward passing apparently. I think if we go 3 at the back do we sacrifice our attackers and attacking play?

Either him or Wesley Snejder
Imagine if someday Sneijder ends up at United as part of the coaching stuff. That would be a nice way for that never ending transfer saga to come full circle.

The signing of Varane requires a few final details, including the completion of a medical. Continued restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic mean that could take some days to organise. Solskjaer explained that there are a few hoops to jump through still.

“From what I know, the club is working on the quickest possible solution to get everything sorted,” he explained.

“I don't know the timescale on it yet. Of course, there is a visa coming into England, with Brexit and quarantining. Everything has to be done as quick as possible, but by the book.”

Varane's family have been interested in United since 3400 BCE when his ancestors carved a drawing on a stone that looked like Ole smirking which they believed to be the "outsider baby from lots of days after today" along with ancient symbols that translated to "Red baddie that lives near water uses giant fork" which paleontologists believe to be Manchester United.

Plays like Rio... hardly gets booked. We need a slick pacy defender to sweep up at the back :D

' He ended up, though, with only 14 yellow cards and two reds in 236 Liga games, a remarkably low tally for a centre back, in stark contrast to Ramos’s 160 yellows in 508 games, with 20 red cards. '

Source: Goal.com
Ok so 14 in 236 gives 0,059 yellow cards per game ~0,06

Rio played 503 matches in PL and got 31 yellow cards which gives us 0,061
~0,06

unbelievable

Interesting quote from the gaffer. Excited to see what formations he has planned.

Hopefully we can switch seamlessly depending on the oppo, something that failed more than came off last year but now we have the players and no excuses.

I would like to see against low blocks

Hendo/DDG

AWB--Varane--Maguire--Shaw

Fred/McT

Bruno----------------Pogba

Sancho--Cavani/Greenwood--Rashford
And higher lines/better oppo

Hendo/DDG
Varane--Maguire--Lindelof
AWB------------------------------------------------Shaw
Bruno--Fred/McT--Pogba

Sancho--Greenwood/Rashford

All morning I've had "Champions League Varane" stuck in my head

Maybe we should just make that his chant at OT. Even if we end up in the Europa League I still want hear it!

I took it to mean we can play a higher line now.

He’s a good 3rd choice actually
He is if you like a mistake prone CB. There is a compilation of last season floating around. Lindelofs errors lead to many goals!

To be fair, I don't mind him as backup, and Ole has to talk him up because Lindleof will probably be feeling threatened with the arrival of Varane. So it is good man management.

We could then just change the 'Champions League' to 'Raphael'

Haven't seen much of him so I'll reserve judgement, really would like us to push Axel as fourth choice now and sell Bailly.

We should try and look to add another CB like him. Not as good or proven , but you shouldn't rely on an indvidual player to play a style of football
Yeah I get your point here. I think (and I hope!) Ole wants us to push up the pitch and play a somewhat higher line.

I have visions of Harry stepping up and really challenging opposition long balls, winning them higher up the pitch and immediately playing it forwards. Like he tries at times for us and particularly for England, but with the safety of Varane sweeping up behind him. Getting us up the pitch further in a more general approach would be a very positive change in our play.

FFS. He loves Lindelof the liability.
If were being honest Lindelof was just as good as Maguire last seaosn. We shit on him so much because of his mistakes are so bad when they rarely happen. He is a fantastic option of the bench and can play the ball which is what we want from players at this level.

Maguire got slated for his mistakes at the start of the season. His nickname is still "slabhead".

We all know it stemmed from his terrible Summer break in Mykonos. He quite possibly had one of the worst mental and physical preparations for a season. Admittedly it was all down to his own mistake on holiday.
