Rashford is going ahead with surgery and could be out until October

I still think this has the hallmarks of a surgery the club doesn’t think he needs but are willing to let him have. The relaxed approach makes no sense. I’ve never blamed him for going to the Euros but if surgery was needed surely the club would have it scheduled already immediately after the Euros not in early August. Not allowed it to be delayed for him to have a holiday.
Or, get this, maybe they felt the guy deserved a holiday after playing football for a year straight?

It's really strange but I'm also happy that he will be out for a few months. Not because I don't like him, I'm probably one of his biggest fans. But because he really needs this rest, physically and mentally as well. I'm not sure I could have taken more of his half-injured performances where everyone and his dog could see that he isn't fully fit. Not to speak of the over the top criticism and abuse he would have continued to receive.

So I'm happy for him to get the chance to rest, recover and then work hard to come back mentally and physically fresh. I'm sure he will do everything to reach his best form again as soon as possible. He will come back at a good time as well.

Enjoy your rest Marcus and get well soon.
I think most of us are in the same boat

He probably shouldn’t have gone to the Euros and just got booked in for the surgery the day after the Europa League final. I’m sure even he knows in hindsight he should have done that considering how his contribution to the Euros was basically cameos, missing a penalty and becoming national figure of hate.

I partially blame OGS for persevering with him through the second half of last season, when everyone could see something was wrong with him and risking even worse damage to Rashford, Southgate for then taking a clearly injured but talented player and not even playing him and Rashford for taking a little too long on making the decision to get surgery.

So it’s a mess where no-one looks good, but at least we finally got to the end point.
Agreed

He said “had I know I wouldn’t have played a significant role in the Euros”.

It suggests to me that he is saying that Southgate told him he needed him and that he was going to play a key role, only to give him 84 minutes across the whole competition (most of which against Ukraine when the game was won)

Again another thing that is on Southgate who knew his injury status, he should have told Marcus he wasn’t going to be a starter and was behind Sterling, Grealish, Foden and Saka in his plans. Absolutely shit man management once again.
Or Marcus told him he was able to play much like he supposedly did all of last season then wasnt as good as the likes of Foden, Sterling, Grealish and so on so in training so wasn’t selected.

Yup ... Love Ole but in this instance, my view is he's more culpable that Southgate. The player was obviously struggling for months (if not longer) and while we were light on replacements, persisting with Rashford especially towards the latter part of the season didn't do anyone any good - apart from our opponents I suppose

Flipping hell, let the young man go on holiday for heavens sake. He wanted to play for his country, this is probably what he dreamed of as kid.
He’s having shoulder surgery, so why can’t he go on holiday 5-6 weeks after surgery during rehabilitation? It’s not like he won’t be able to walk onto a plane and do physio sessions at a hotels gym?

Presumably the player was telling the manager he was fine to play though? I think you blame Ole for keep playing when he was putting in fairly awful performances but if you tell the manager you’re fit to play, for months, you can’t blame poor performances on injury

The player Rashford was pre injury will hopefully return after surgery and a good long rest. Been a shadow of himself for ages now and I'm not even sure he'd have held down a starting position the way he's playing.

Rashford is class. On and off the pitch. Happy that he’s sorting himself out.

incredible on the prior page someone is claiming that Grealish is a “breath of fresh air”. One fed the kids of GB during lockdown, one got smashed and drove home before being arrested.
Yeah, but 4chan said it. It must be true.

This is it. The frustration at Rashford comes from the refusal to accept any criticism is valid. You’re right he has been a shadow of his former self as you say, for the entire second half of the season for my money.

Yet as it was happening there was so much complete refusal to acknowledge there was even an issue with those suggesting there might be accused of not being real fans

Yeah I’ll think I’ll stick to the more likely reasoning that simply he wasn't as good as the others in training. Given the form he had been in going in to the tournament not much of a stretch.
Marcus had already trained with the squad for the best part of 3 weeks before the decision was made and we had 2 friendlies in that time.

Southgate had every chance to assess his form and fitness and chose to take Rashford for a position we were stacked in over the likes of JWP who could have provided another option to Rice/Phillips/Henderson who massively lacked creativity.

You know what is going to be a great thread in 2 months. This one when he is coming back ahead of the reported 3 month schedule and people want to debate wether or not it was all planned to add the to Marcus Rashford Brand/ Legend.

People are really ridiculous here. I am not English and have no affinity towards the English team. I would always prefer that United players choose United over England (if there was indeed, even a choice to be made). But it is pretty easy to understand why representing your country at an international tournament is important. So what Rashford only got 80+ minutes at the tournament? Seriously how can anyone begrudge him is beyond my comprehension.

He probably loves the club, but the sport is his job, it's a profession. If he wants to take some time off for a holiday at the end of his work year, as everyone is fecking entitled to, he's able to do so. Regardless of if he's going to take further time off due to an operation. Time off recovering from an injury/rehab is hardly the same as a holiday.

I like Rashford but when he puts out statements like this he plays into the hands of his detractors, he really does.

You need an op? Go and have it, come back firing and get back to your best on the pitch. Thats all we want. I dont think anyone would blame him for wanting to play at the Euro's, thats normal for any player to want to be involved but bloody hell when you dissect the statement....

"I put the club ahead of my own wants and needs"
"I didn't want to let anyone down but I did because I wasn't fit"
"Despite this I wanted to play for England so I put that first and went to the Euro's because I WAS fit and WAS managing the injuries"
"In hindsight if I had known I wasn't going to get picked I may not have gone, so despite acknowledging I was playing so badly by the end of the season that I felt I was letting my club down I still expected to be picked for England"

There is just no need for him to be getting all tangled up in this nonsense. No one begrudges him going to the Euros up until the point he decides to tell us he's putting his club first. Everyone is happy to acknowledge he was carrying an injury up until he does the whole "I wasn't fit but I was fit" contradiction that some of the more maligned posters here have dared to point out previously. Just have the op Marcus....

No one is blaming Rashford for playing in Euros?

Check his thread, so many have done it saying he should be getting operated as club is paying his wages.

It's important for him to communicate because he is a hero to kids everywhere. It's not his fault he wants to communicate and actually cares about what people think of him. He is more than footballer let's get that straight. Also... no one begrudges him?? Have you not seen the vile bullshit he's been getting from our own fans for choosing country over club? For doing this surgery and "costing United a good start"? He gets a lot of hate and he communicates against it. I think it's the public who are not used to a person being kind and caring. They project their own doubts onto him and wonder "why did he have to do that? come and tell us how he feels? just get on with it!" He is getting on with it, but he also communicates to his millions of little fans.

Is it so hard to just look at his messages and say, "Well done Lad, see you soon" That's all that's needed. Why is he "playing into the hands of detractors"? Those detractors are fecking arseholes and he doesn't need to change his way for them. Far more appreciate these messages than hate him or pity him for it. So just cheer him on. He's doing your club and country good.

You need to rest after surgery so not the best idea to go on holiday, as it is not the same. Very often you have checks anyway.

It was clear that he would go to the Euros, every player wants to go there. Lets just wait for him to come back, we will cope

Ok, "no reasonable person....."
So for him there is a reason to justify.

Not sure what's wrong with players saying what they want to. Pogba is getting shit for not saying anything and getting operated during mid season. Rashford is getting stick for doing opposite of that.

It's like players can't win at all

No Im sorry, Im just as entitled to hold an opinion as anyone else and I think that message was contradictory nonsense and plays into the hands of his detractors far more than doing what every single other player on the planet does and just says they need an op and are off to have it.

Don't tell the fans how you put the club first at great personal risk, THEN go to the Euros when you acknowledge you weren't fit and performances were so bad by the end of the season you were "letting people down". This kind of stuff just isnt needed because he's completely tripping himself up.

This has NOTHING to do with him being kind and caring. He is a footballer too and sometimes, just sometimes people can divorce the two and judge the footballing side of Marcus Rashford separately from the personal side of him.

I personally am giving him stick for putting out a frankly self indulgent contradictory statement. If he wants to explain in great detail to the world whats is going on then thats a matter for him but equally it is then fair game to judge him for what he says.

Im not judging him for going to the Euros. Most players would do that.

I AM judging him for simultaneously saying he puts the club first and he was so unfit he was "letting people down" with his performances while also saying he was fit and the injury was being managed and he went to the Euros because it was his own personal dream since he was a boy.

Why? People have long speculated why his form dipped so much near the end of the season. Why can't he communicate how he feels? People can judge him for being a footballer and then separately as a person? Come back to me when the world stops calling him a monkey when he makes a footballing mistake.

Ah so because someone else racially abuses him Im not allowed to comment on anything he says about anything?

Yeah that seems reasonable.

I can separate the two so I will.

He can communicate how he feels if he wants but when its contradictory nonsense then its fair game to point it out.

Brilliantly put. I think this is another real time example of no criticism being allowed. Some of the people criticising you for this post were the ones jumping over everyone for daring to even suggest there was a thing wrong with Rashford‘s performances in the second half of the season throwing stats and laughing emojis in literally every single post at anyone daring to suggest he wasn’t playing well - something now considered an accepted fact, but that doesn’t matter as we’re now blindly attacking criticism on another subject.

Some posters lack the ability to separate issues. The racism is awful and those responsible should get long custodial sentences. Feeding kids is good. None of that means as a footballer he is beyond criticism. Yet even when we were seeing his performances decline we had:

:lol::lol::lol: stats:lol::lol:eye test :lol::lol: stats.

The “eye test” being someone suggesting that watching a player provides better insight into how he’s playing than plucking stats from the area over an undefined period of time. Treated as some ridiculous notion by those who for some reason cannot allow criticism

You’d see him walk around the pitch and at the slightest hint someone was suggesting he didn’t have a good game the cabal fell in telling “goal creation” stats from 2018 onwards to correct any ‘moron’ who thought he had a poor showing

Not sure what's the problem. He said he was fit enough to play but not fully fit to play to his peak condition. He said it was his dream to play for his country but had he knew he would play so little, with bit of hindsight decision would or might have been different.

Oh there is absolutely no problem. It’s just that some people like to say this is “football criticism” when in actual fact it goes beyond that. Rashford communicating his thoughts is suddenly within the plain of football and therefore seen as football player criticism. It’s BS.

Southgate is the type of person who tells kids he has no more candies during Halloween when in fact he does, he is just saving them for the numbers so that he has plenty of those potentially tasty candies even if he won't eat them.

No, whats BS, is you resorting to crap like this rather than discuss the point. In what way does what Ive said go "beyond that?" what is the insinuation here and what is it based on please?

Again he can "communicate his thoughts" and I can therefore comment on said thoughts.

Those threads are still there to view. We know even he thought his performances for us were below standard but at the time when posters suggested he might not be playing well - or even after the fact as they looked back on the season - they were attacked.

It’s very easy to run posters out of threads. Maybe some don’t have the inclination to argue the toss with a stranger online, and that’s fair enough.

But the idea that watching someone play was a better barometer of how they’re playing than out of context cherrypicking of stats (something the poster termed the ‘eye test’) is considered something deserving of widespread derision, seems incredible to me.

But like I said, the threads will always be there to read for people to see what the response was to posters who thought there’d been a dip in form.

The second he has a poor performance next season the only people to voice that view will be Tory racists who want kids to die of starvation…or something…and    of course

The problem is the contradiction.

"I put the club first" then "I went to the Euros because it was my dream"
"I wasn't fit to the point I was letting people down" then "I was deemed fit and the injury was being managed so whats another couple of weeks"
"I was playing so badly that I felt I was letting people down" yet "Had I known I wouldnt play in the Euro's I may have done things differently"

None of that makes any sense at all, all contained in the one statement. Its perfectly reasonable to point that out without being accused of anything and it fact it completely validates both sides of the ongoing Rashford debate because he appears be agreeing with everyones view in one post/press release.

Worse, he has a chat with them in the doorstep about their five a day and sends them home with leaflets for their parents.

Social media is vile. Whether it's Twitter, 4chan or this fecking thread, everyone is so divided it's horrible to see.

I really think this pandemic has made it much worse too, since most of our interactions are online now.
Horrific stuff
